Melinda Zucco: Tom Taylor's mistake

I know the Tom Taylor run has been mostly well received but I really have to air out some thoughts on his creation of Melinda Zucco.There's nothing wrong in theory with giving Dick Grayson a long lost sister even with how "soap opera" that idea is but I think it's more harmful than most realize. We all want Nightwing to have more dedicated side characters but making one that directly ties into his origin does him no favors.

It's like adding to Batman's origin story that Martha was really having an affair with Alfred or that their death was a conspiracy. It's something that actively takes away from a simple, understandable origin. Melinda Zucco is essentially a tumor hanging onto Dicks origin. His origin story must now do the work of serving as one for Melinda as well. It does nothing but take from Dick to give to some oc. It makes something easy to understand and classic very messy and muddled.

Now there is an assumption that John Grayson was a cheater and that the man who killed the Grayson's went on to raise their daughter. A tangle of plot threads that services Dick as a character in no way. It's not worth messing with Dicks origin story just to take away from him and give to an oc.

I wanna talk about something that's been bothering me about Harley Quinn. Bruce Timm heavily based Harley on her voice actress Arleen Sorkin. He based her appearance, personality and even her costume on Arleen. The costume being based on something Arleen wore in an early performance. Timm even named her "Harleen" which is one letter away from being "Arleen". So tell me WHY Bruce Timm would promptly draw tons of nsfw art of Harley Quinn every chance he got and sexualized her in almost everything he put her in knowing damn well she's based on a person he knew in real life?????

Possibly the worst thing a writer can do to a character is make stupid decisions with their love life. You could make them a mass murderer but it will never be as remembered as the time they cheated or had some sort of gross affair. That moment would never be forgotten. Always in YouTube top 10 lists standing as one of the first things new fans learn about the character. "Remember when blank slept with blank?"

I want a story where Dick "dies" and comes back through some magical means but when he comes back he's 10 years old again and has only the memories of himself at that age.

"I guess I'm in the future now? Bruce is so old! He's like a grandpa!"

Thank you for answering my Titans ask, I'll admit I found their Jason very annoying so I knew it was possible I missed something, but I've also seen his fans twist canon too many times. I don't think I'm ENTIRELY immune to his powers of sympathy--I didn't want him to fall to his death or anything--I just want him to get his much deserved spinoff show and stay there. If they're so hyped about Red Hood that they're rushing his story and putting it in Titans, then he must be popular enough for one?

A Red hood show would be kinda hard to do. Us comic fans know Jason but a lot of mainstream audiences don't. Generally Red Hood isn't nearly as popular as Nightwing or Batgirl is. And how would you introduce new fans to your Red hood?

The current Red Hood is a guy who took up the mantle of Robin and then was a sad boi. That's not an origin story. Not enough people care about Titans to have a spinoff based on a character that's been half fleshed out. Not even Jason fans totally like Titans Jason. He's a brat but not in the charming way. In the "go away" way.

They say they're making a Red Hood spinoff but it's not certain. I think it's the backup plan if Titans gets cancelled. And knowing how bad Titans is that might just happen.

Angry Dick Grayson headcanons?

-Canonically he’s fairly violent depending on the severity of the situation, as shown by the time he beat the Joker to death with his bare hands when he thought that he killed Tim

-He can either get really quiet and tense or really loud and destructive (there is no in-between)

-Sometimes when he’s disappointed in someone, he emulates some of Bruce’s habits, such as being extremely quiet and terrifying, which is really alarming considering how chatty he usually is. Whoever is the subject of his disapproval is quick to try and reconcile so as to avoid his wrath

-He definitely holds grudges and will not hesitate to pull out receipts from years ago that will without fail ruin whoever dares oppose him when he gets in a mood

-It’s startling to those who haven’t ever seen him angry to experience a snap because it’s such a shift in character but it’s still him; he’s still a human being who experiences anger, he isn’t always happy go lucky Dick Grayson who never feels negative emotions. He can be incredibly vindictive and spiteful if prompted in any way
