what if joshua graham had been found by a group of wandering missionaries instead. lying there, body blistered, raw, the hot, desert sun blinding him. he doesn’t realize he’s been making noise, much less mustering what he can of guttural prayers; not until there are men shadowing him, their voices distant through the ringing in his ears.

the face of daniel young is a familiar one, aged a few years, bearded; but joshua could never forget those eyes, malpais or not. ( not. ) joshua nearly sobs, does sob. choked grunt that it is. what little is left of the mormon boy inside him cries out, anguished, because surely this is hell. and to think the malpais had not feared this.

his voice burns his throat when he finally speaks, “forgive me,” he utters, “forgive me, forgive me, forgive me,” a desperate mantra, a plea, fingers twitching and he can not tell, through the pain of his torment, if this ethereal creature with the face of his friend is meant to deliver his soul to heaven or hell.
