Who's your favorite VC character and ✨why✨?
Easy answer, anon. Always and forever Armand.
That's the easy part of the answer. Here comes the hardest part: Why?... Why, indeed.
Believe it or not, 'The Vampire Armand' was the first book I ever read out of the entire Vampire Chronicles series. No, I am not Assad Zaman. Truth is I never had access to any of the VC books until one day I found a brand new copy of the hardcover 'The Vampire Armand' for the equivalent of 2 dollars. Yes, I mean the book with this gorgeous cover.
Tumblr media
It was a no-brainer. I got it. I read it in one sitting. The sun began to rise outside the window as I read the last pages. He became almost substancial to me in the wake of that dawn. And that was the moment I realized I was utterly in love with Armand... forevermore.
The circumstances of his life and his introduction to vampirism struck me as something utterly tragic and beautiful, in the way a wilting bouquet of flowers can be beautiful. The way he uses language to convey—no, to paint—feeling caught me off guard entirely, drawing me further and further into his world with each page. I can still feel the humidity he describes permeated the convent where Lestat lay comatose. I will never forget the translucent red velvet curtains around his and Marius's bed. Nothing will ever erase from my mind the heat of the bonfire where he lost his brothers. And no, I will never ever hear Beethoven's Appassionata without picturing Sybelle convulsing against the piano.
Now, understand I read (and re-read twice) 'The Vampire Armand' and only one year later did I finally get access to 'Interview with the Vampire' and the rest of the books in the series. I swam in Armand's words, only half understanding some of his references to other circumstances and characters, for an entire year.
As I read the series, seeing Armand through other character's eyes, I knew his voice already. I knew when Louis misunderstood his simplicity in 'Interview with the Vampire', I cried when Lestat dismissed his pleas in 'The Vampire Lestat', I understood his conflict and pain in the turning of Daniel and I raged when Marius demanded his unconditional love and support in 'Queen of the Damned'. Now, don't get me wrong, I loved him, but I understood as I kept reading he had the habit of doing terrible terrible things to others while failing to see, in his simplicity, how that impacted them and himself in the process. Of course I knew that in his own "biography" he had skipped over entire traumatic and violent actions he had done and disregarded his role in his misery. But I saw the cycles he was falling into. I knew he didn't, but I did.
And as I read on, book after book, I understood his silence and aloofness, his throbbing sorrow. And even as I passed 'The Vampire Armand' and kept reading, I knew I could never love another character as I loved him.
Do I defend some of his actions? No, absolutely not. But I understand his depth. I approached the entire VC series through his eyes, really, and that is why I could never truly love Lestat. Most of VC readers are drawn in by Lestat's charisma but I was drawn in by Armand's depth of feeling.
He is my favorite character because he is flawed and desolate, stricken by a grief so profound it is almost pathological... but it isn't. He is my favorite because he ultimately learned that grief can be conquered through love.
No matter how much pain and abuse, manipulation and violence he suffered and made others suffer, he eventually understood that devotion is not love, and faith doesn't have to be fervent to be true. Ultimately he embraced his passionate nature, working his way into a safe expression of it. By the end of the series ('Blood Communion') he is just beginning his real journey, and that is so... healing to both him and us as an audience. And for that... I will always love his journey and his place in this universe.
He always deserved to be surrounded by flowers... and flowers he got. Even if it took him a while to understand they didn't have to be funeral to be for him.
