It's okay if you have trouble understanding people. Reading others is not as important as being compassionate and open to understanding them.

It should be a bigger scandal that J.K. Rowling is threatening to sue small accounts for accurately calling her a Holocaust denier. So glad the Streisand effect exists. Now we can all rebuke her reprehensible views more than ever.

my 8 year old has some emotional regulation difficulties, and I've done my best to help him with those.
unrelated, I gave him a shovel a couple of days ago and told him to go have fun in the field because I was tired.
He suddenly seemed happier, having less trouble breathing through disappointment and just being generally all around more cheerful and able to focus in school better. Sure, my partner had to pull him out of a six foot by three foot hole today, but he was stoked about it!

things that I think are magical
morning dewdrops and mist
the sound a wind chime makes on a cool evening
very old trees, and ancient woodlands
sunrises over mountains
the way hair looks underwater
pan flute music
the ocean and the sea
moonlight on falling snow
the bluish light of dusk
the call of loons
silence
flowers that catch raindrops
insect wings
ancient castles and cathedrals
the sound of a coin dropping into a wishing well
luna moths
volcanic eruptions

I think one of my very favorite things about linguistics is that the subject matter is so available. We're almost all native speakers of a language, and language is all around us every day. Making observations about language is cheap and easy. And linguistics is a young field, so most questions are open and there's lots of low-hanging fruit. Of course you have to put in the work if you want to answer a linguistic question to a high epistemic standard, but when it comes to just playing around you really can do linguistics—meaningful, new linguistics—wherever and whenever. You can just zero in on some thing you notice about how people talk, and bam, that's a research question. It's like a constant smorgasbord of intellectual stimulation. I really cannot recommend getting into linguistics enough.

The way you change your immediate reactions to things is that you catch yourself having an uncharitable/bigoted/overly judgmental thought and you catch it and replace it and then you do that a hundred times a day for your whole life and eventually one day like five years later you realize that you think differently now and you’ll always be working on something but that’s how life goes and that’s fine.

remember to be alive. spend less time scrolling and getting trapped in old thoughts...you won’t find what you need there. it’s time to be making new things, thinking new thoughts, loving and appreciating as much as you can, and experiencing the life in front of you.
