Hey you know what's super funny about the idea of "good bi rep"?

For a character to be canonically bi you have to make sure and establish that they're attracted to multiple genders. Not all mediums allow you to get inside every character's head or show what they're thinking. Flirting can be read ambiguously, and god forbid they flirt with a character who's not into them and be read as pushy or predatory. So it can be super handy to just mention an ex or two! But you better not mention too many exes because that would make them a slutty bisexual which is (checks notes) bad, and you definitely better be careful about making them poly, because that might make them, uh... greedy. Oh, and those exes? They better be perfectly amiable breakups with no conflict or drama, because it's bad to represent queer people in toxic or abusive relationships (especially queer women! very bad), and you definitely can't have them have lost a partner if the partner was queer because that's "bury your gays..." You should probably also eliminate all trauma from their backstory, just to be safe. You should probably also make sure they're not involved in crime, deception, or anything of the sort, because that would make them "deviant" and a stereotype.

But don't worry! Once you've carefully crafted your nice, monogamous, experienced-but-not-too-experienced Lawful Good bi character, you will be rewarded with your audience deeming them "boring" and quickly passing them over for other characters. :)

flowey pulls naya up to safety and there's this shocked breath between all of them, the animosity just freezing. until flowey finally asks "why didn't you tell me" and naya gets to explain "they convinced me that knowing would make you worse. and i guess they were right." it works. they calm down, and find another way.

#things would be tense between the kiddos #like it wouldn't just be fixed but maybe a solution could be found together. still volatile but not like DEADLY DIRE #joat talks #plus frisk would still ultimately offer their soul to flowey. this would just change wherever or not he'd take it.

hi hi!! do you have any advice on writing naturally flowing dialogue? istg every time i re-read JOAT the dialogue feels so natural and smooth and i can’t get enough

fuahfanahda how sweet 🥺 i love writing dialogue!! I'll just list some non specific advice lol

i try to be realistic. like can i actually imagine someone saying this? I'll say things out loud and think, does this flow? forget the thesaurus, what word do i instinctually want to say here, even if it's not the prettiest most accurate word? would i throw in an um or a like? would i laugh? etc etc

i say this a lot but i have a director approach to writing, so I'm always watching the characters in my head like they're actors performing this stuff. that said, drawing from scripted shows/movies is helpful, but my weird deeper recommendation is to pay attention to REALITY TV SHOW DIALOGUE. it's unscripted yet most contestants are pretty actor-adjacent so you'll find great lines scattered into more organic convos.

then it's not just the words. to me, gestures and pauses are huge. huge huge huge. don't be afraid to interrupt a line of dialogue to say what's going on with their hands, or where they're looking, or what's going on in their expression. again, this is all very visual for me, these are actors.

try to be true to your character's individual voices. this is pretty easy with utdr fanfiction since every voice is soooo distinct, but i keep my rules pretty simple. tori doesn't use contractions. simone doesn't cuss. em cusses A LOT. naya rambles, lots of likes and uhs. chara's an edgelord. and so on. voice comes naturally the more you write, but just give one or two simple rules to each character from the start.
