absolutely constantly thinking about the fact that Rapunzel was the lost princess, but Eugene was never the lost prince, because Edmund willingly abandoned him, and then kept tabs on his location without ever trying to contact him... and thinking about what Eugene, who saw how much energy Arianna and Frederic poured into finding Rapunzel again, must have felt when he understood that no one had put even half as much effort for him

I had some major inspiration, as you can see. 💁🏼‍♀️ I love this song and really wanted to use it for these two, so here we are! These fit so well with the lyrics, I died.

what do you think about Eugene's actual fear in BVA?
I just... I can't comprehend how they looked at a character who canonically grew up an orphan, who got stabbed and literally chose to bleed to death to save someone else's life, who admits he has abandonment issues all the way back in BEA, who recently discovered an entire new backstory which sent him in like the 4th identity crisis of his life which was yet to be resolved - and out of all of that, they chose... a cowlick. Like I am very literally baffled. Even Nigel got a fear that they took the time to explain in another episode but Eugene couldn't be afforded a little empathy?
I think it's funny that my peacock shitpost got multiple tags saying "you know what i think i would have preferred that" because like... the cowlick is not bad because it's ridiculous, but because it is literally impossible as a worst fear, and was just a dig like "ahah isn't it funny that he has an ego". Eugene doesn't have a fucking panic attack each time he wakes up in the morning with his hair being a mess, yet that's what they tried to sell us here, and it's absolutely frustrating.
As a comparaison, Attila's fear is little floating demon croissants - it IS ridiculous, but it's also like... actual nightmare material? It's not something that can happen in your everyday life, and maybe it's irrational but at least it is scary.
If Eugene's biggest fear had been a murderous peacock (or like... any callback to a previous adventure, like idk the awful little creatures from The Way of the Willow), I would have been a little miffed that it wasn't something more serious, but it would have at least been 1. something funny and not meant to be taken too seriously and 2. not a stupid attack on his character as if he's only defined by his ego. Again, even NIGEL was given an actual meaningful fear for him - only Eugene was "mocked" for his character flaws, which here is caring too much about his appearance
I'm not even asking for something super angsty because I know Eugene wasn't the focus of this episode, and I think it does make sense that he's got his shit together and is the one who helps set up the talents' show. But there are other ways they could have gone about making his fear inconsequential while still... idk, showing us that they actually cared about his character
Like idk:
- i don't buy the idea that the reference to the "pre-pan cowlick post-pan perfection" line was actually intended by the crew tbh, but if it was truly a ref to his Flynn Rider's days then maybe they could have made his reflection show him with the "Flynn nose" from his wanted posters. Your nose changing like this can't actually happen everyday like a cowlick, it would be a funny callback to the movie (and to the thing about his appearance he actually defends loudly multiple times), people like me could still read too much into it (he doesn't want to be the same person as in the poster), and it's even still about his appearance so it really doesn't change much... it just feels a little more intended as something that could mean more
- alternatively, another inconsequential fear would be him hearing everyone, even Rapunzel, calling him Horace. It's a joke they make often, his reactions to hearing it are often funny, it actually acknowledges the fact that he discovered his whole life was a lie not too long ago and his whole thing about his identity, but Rapunzel could easily snaps him out of it - and the episode could have been the same
Again it didn't have to be something big or entirely different but just... it's upsetting that he's the only character whose fear is constructed as being "his fault" (for being too conceited). I think that's why a lot of Eugene fans were disappointed and angry, not because it was a joke but because it was a joke at his expense, when everyone else was at least given some thoughts and compassion

Anyway, props to Lance Strongbow for being the only one of Rapunzel’s main four friends to not turn on her at any point. Eugene may only have done it for a short while and only out of a misguided attempt to protect her but he did do it. I don’t need to even mention the things Varian and Cassandra did.
Lance wins the ‘never betrayed Rapunzel in any capacity for any amount of time’ award.

i’m gonna take the inclusion of pascal to mean that he is a gay lil chameleon. good for him, good for him.
my pronoun and sexuality headcanons: rapunzel is pan and uses she/they, eugene is bi and uses he/they, cass is a lesbian and uses any pronouns, and lance is bi (female lean but there were definitely some men in there). in conclusion none of them are straight

so i’ve come to the conclusion that eugene and rapunzel most likely both have ptsd from their experiences both growing up and during the events of the film and series. i was diagnosed with ptsd last october and since then i’ve been thinking a lot about how ptsd would manifest for the characters.
for eugene, it’s the little things that get to him. a curve of a knife reminiscent of the one gothel used to steal his life away from him, the sound of a large quantity of water rushing towards him (like both the scene from the film and the scene in flynnposter), revisiting places where bad events took place (as seen in the eye of pincosta). he’s also really good at hiding the fact that he’s having a ptsd-based reaction to something. ceo of using humor to cope (as seen in pascal’s story and the quest for varian, as well as the eye of pincosta). in eye of pincosta, he even uses humor to try to avoid facing what’s having him anxious.
for rapunzel, it’s flashbacks and nightmares, such as the nightmare she has in what the hair. tromus even uses this manifestation of her ptsd against her in rapunzeltopia. and while eugene uses humor to cope, rapunzel evades the issue like mentioning it will make it realer than it already is. this is why she doesn’t want to talk about cassandra’s betrayal. it’s all a big reminder of everything gothel put her through and talking about it makes it real.
i imagine that post-series, eugene and rapunzel both have to really face their post-traumatic stress in a big way. and it will likely take them both (but especially rapunzel, i think) a long time to fully comprehend how much everything they’ve been through has impacted them. it took me five years from the onset of my trauma to begin recognizing there was an issue bigger than my pre-existing anxiety disorder, and i can only imagine that it would take rapunzel and eugene just as long, if not longer.

sliding into the tts fandom to say
that eugene and rapunzel’s relationship is my favorite disney relationship because of how much of a team they are. they save each other on more than one occasion, work well together in high stakes situations, and care for each other emotionally better than anybody else does. i just think they’re neat.
