It is with a heavy heart that have made the decision to stop posting on this blog.
I will leave it active and check in on it from time to time, but I am going to moving over to Instagram for the foreseeable future.  I would love it if you would hop over there and give me a follow! I really do appreciate all that you have done for me up until this point to help this blog grow, and I can promise you that the content will continue to be of the same standard, if not higher!  I will be more carefully editing photos, and doing more research to inform on the cars that I am posting, along with telling the stories of these cars that I have come across over the years!
Thank you all again for your love, and I hope to see you on Instagram, my account is @_autocyclopedia_

This is a 1976 Ferrari 308 GT2 that is currently for sale at Lake Forest Sports Cars.  According to the dealer, the car was originally raced in the IMSA GTU series in the 70′s before being converted to an SCCA GT2 spec in the 80′s.  After this conversion, the car was raced in SCCA events for over 20 years.  This car has been stored at this dealer as long as I can remember, and is now for sale for the low, low price of $695,000.  This racer was spotted at Lake Forest Sports Cars in December of 2018.

McLaren re-entered the supercar game in 2011 with the MP4-12C.  They set up a small initial network of about five dealers in the United States, and I was lucky enough to have one of the chosen dealers be less than 10 minutes from where I grew up.  Once the MP4-12C established itself as a legitimate competitor to Ferrari and Lamborghini, customers began desiring more customization for their cars, which lead to more public exposure for McLaren Special Operations, or MSO.  Today, MSO cranks out special projects like the Sabre or highly bespoke examples of top end McLarens, but back in 2012, they were just getting started. This was the first mainstream example of what they could do for an “average” customer - Project Alpha.  The McLaren dealer in Chicago ordered just 6 of these bespoke cars, sprinkled with just about every visual upgrade in the MSO book, along with mechanical upgrades in the form of 24 extra horsepower, revised shift and throttle mapping, and a retuned exhaust system.  The most obvious feature on these cars are the vents on the front fenders, with some painted to match the car, and others opting for black accented louvers.  This package amounted to a $52,059 option on top of the base price of the car, bringing total prices to around $335,000 for each of the six cars.  This white example was spotted at Lake Forest Sports Cars in 2012.

Rosso Corsa may be “just” the standard color for Ferraris, sometimes referred to as resale red, when owners only have resale value in mind, but I have to say it does look amazing in most cases... this LaFerrari coupe is a perfect example!  This 1 of 500 example was was spotted at Lake Forest Sports Cars, in 2013.

Ferrari began producing the Enzo in 2002, and originally built 399 examples, ending in 2004.  They did build a special 400th car specifically as a gift for Pope John Paul II.  The Enzo was the top dog on the roads when it was released, competing mainly against the likes of the Porsche Carrera GT and the Mercedes SLR McLaren.  This Rosso Corsa example was spotted at Lake Forest Sports Cars in 2013.

The Ferrari LaFerrari was Ferrari’s solution to the hybrid hypercar, and competed directly against the McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder.  Ferrari built 500 coupes, and this Rosso Scuderia example was the first one that I saw in person.  This car was spotted at Lake Forest Sports Cars in 2013.

This is an Aston Martin DB AR1 was based on the DB7, and only 99 were produced.  This car was designed specifically for the markets in Florida and California, most obviously seen by it’s complete lack of roof.  A handful of examples did remain in Europe with eight left-hand drive examples residing mainly in Germany, and a sole left-hand drive example that remained in the UK.  This example was spotted at Lake Forest Sports Cars, I believe some time around 2008.

Only two posts from this show, not for lack of good cars in attendance, but just difficulty of actually seeing the cars!  If you look carefully in the backgrounds, you can see a LaFerrari, an Enzo, and another F12 TDF, but they were simply too swamped to get pictures of.  This F40, F50, and F12 TDF were all spotted at the Lake Forest Concours in 2017

As I’ve mentioned, 2017 was the final year for the Lake Forest Concours, I think due to a number of factors.  The year previous saw a Mustang lose control and crash, and this year’s show was so crowded that the local police had to shut down the road outside of the dealer because every nearby parking lot was full.  The dealer wanted to let things cool off, and they have said that they wanted to re-evaluate and try to find a different way to put on the show, but that has yet to happen sadly.
This show had so many spectators that it was hard to get good pictures.  That, combined with the fact that it was about 95 degrees and sunny meant that I didn’t spend too much time walking through.  The first car that caught my eye at the show was this Guards Red Carrera GT.  This car was a regular at shows around Chicago for many years, and I believe it was the very first Carrera GT that I ever saw, spotting it on the road back in 2007 just a bit after I started driving.  This car was spotted at the Lake Forest Concours in 2017

On a warm September morning in 2017, Fuelfed held their annual Ferrari show early in the morning, and Lake Forest Sports Cars held their annual Concours d’Elegance.  These are typically two of the best shows of the year in the Chicago suburbs, but with both occuring on the same day, the two shows pulled some of the best cars from each other.  I went down to the Fuelfed show first, as it began a few hours earlier than the Concours, and heard a rumor that the Ferraris at the show would be making a convoy up to the Concours, and decided to leave early to try to catch all of the cars out on the road.
Unfortunately, the rumors that I heard of their route were false, but it was a nice day and I was sitting on the side of a good road for car spotting in general, so I decided to wait around a bit to see what would come by.  After spotting a few classic muscle cars and the odd Ferrari or two, I completely freaked out as I saw this, what remains probably the best car I’ve ever seen out actually driving on the street.
This Pagani Huayra is stored in the showroom at Lake Forest Sports Cars, and is almost never seen out of the street, so seeing the car ahead of the Concours was a very big surprise!  These pictures aren’t great with the sun ahead of me, but the car warrants the post, regardless of the quality.  This Pagani was spotted in Glencoe, Illinois in September of 2017.

I mentioned at the beginning of the posts for this show that 2016 was a high water mark for the Lake Forest Concours.  The following year would be the final year the show was held, and the crowds made it hard to get good pictures of many of the cars.  I also mentioned how unique this show was in terms of the huge amount of rare cars in attendance.  Just to recap, some of the rarer cars at this event included... 2 Porsche 918 Spyders Mercedes SLR McLaren Edition Roadster 2 Porsche 911Rs Pagani Huayra Coupe Koenigsegg One:1 Lancia 037 Stradale Ferrari 599XX Ferrari Daytona Competizione Ferrari F50 Ferrari Enzo 2 Ferrari LaFerraris Ferrari 288 GTO Ferrari 599 SA Aperta Ferrari F12 TDF 2 Ferrari 599 GTOs Maserati MC12 McLaren P1 Aston Martin Zagato Villa d’Este Any car show with just one of those cars would be special, but to have them all in one place, with most of them being driven to the show in the rain by their owners?  Good luck seeing that happen again!  All of the above group shots were taken at the Lake Forest Concours in 2016

Lamborghini Aventador SV Roadster in Blue Cepheus.  The exact car had a MSRP of $539,959, which actually makes it one of the cheaper specs, just about $6,000 above the base price after destination charges.  When this show happened, SV Roadster deliveries had just begun, so this was quite a treat to see!  This owner previously had a grey Murcielago SV that I only saw one time, but it was one of my favorite specs, pictures of that car will come one day.  This blue roadster was spotted at the Lake Forest Concours in 2016

A very special car for my 300th post!
The Maserati MC12 was based on the Ferrari Enzo, but with a body much more focused on track performance with the intention to mark Maserati’s return to top-level racing.  In order to homologate the car, Maserati needed to build 50 street-legal versions, and this is one of them.  The body work on this car is unlike anything else, from the massive front overhang with those impossibly thin pieces of body work over the front body work and on to the completely covered engine bay.  One of the most distinct features of the MC12 is certainly the absolutely massive rear wing, which had to be redesigned and sized down to meet FIA standards for the race car.
All but one MC12 left the factory wearing a white and blue livery, with just one car painted all black specially for then Ferrari Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher.  This is not that car, but one that was repainted to match, making it one of 2 MC12s in a different color, both matching.
The MC12 is a highly rare and valuable car, and in all my years of seeking out rare cars, this is one of only 3 that I have seen, one other being a road car in Las Vegas, and the other a Corsa at this same dealer.  This soaked example was spotted at the Lake Forest Concours in 2016

Second year in a row seeing this amazing R8 at this show, and it’s got to be one of my favorite R8s I’ve ever seen.  I haven’t seen this car in years, I’d love to know where it is now.  This beautiful build was spotted at the Lake Forest Concours in 2016

Lamborghini Aventador wearing what I’m sure is a very, very expensive body kit. Maybe someone who knows those kits better than I can give me some more info!  This raging bull was spotted at the Lake Forest Concours in 2016

I’ve posted this 1 of 4 Argento Nurburgring Ferrari F50 before, but this was the last time that I saw this car.  I had a very lengthy conversation with the owner about the car, and how it compared to his 288GTO and his F40.  He said the F50 is an incredibly easy car to drive, with a shifter like an old Toyota Carolla, and that he absolutely loved the car.  The owner was one of the most avid car enthusiasts that I had ever met, with a collection of all of the Ferrari halo cars, along with an amazing collection of homologation special road cars, from a 959, the 037 Stradale at this same show, a Lancia Delta S4, and many, many others.
He would sadly pass suddenly before car show season began the following year, and this would be the last time I spoke with him.  His sons still bring some of his cars out on occasion, but this F50 was sold off last year, and resides in Los Angeles now as far as I’m aware.
This incredible F50 and it’s incredible owner were spotted at the Lake Forest Concours in 2016
