It’s a bad idea.

Dean realizes it as soon as he opens the door to the Roadhouse, the heat and savory smells from inside cresting into him like a wave. Christmas carols thrum loudly from the jukebox on the other side of the diner. There’s too many people, too many sounds, too many— eyes on him, slowly finding him pair by pair. His hands are already shaking, his mouth is already dry, and this was a mistake. 

But Cas is at his back, and Dean will look like an idiot if he spins around and sprints down the road, so he swallows a lump in his throat and pushes the rest of his way in. 

It’s no different from any of the other shindigs Ellen’s put on over the years; she does this every year, finds a reason for a party, whether it be Christmas or someone’s birthday or, in this case, a fifty-year opening anniversary of the Roadhouse. She usually throws a few turkeys into the broilers and cajoles everyone to bring sides like it’s some giant potluck. Dean used to look forward to it, growing up, because it meant he could pilfer rolls and scraps of turkey into his pockets for him and Sam to feast on for at least a week. (Ellen caught him once—instead of a reprimand, she wordlessly handed him a can of cranberry sauce, her eyes full of understanding.) 

Now, it’s just a bunch of people he doesn’t want to see, all crammed into a room that smells sourly like nostalgia.

With the purist movement growing stronger, the scavengers getting more hostile, and the incurable disease spreading, ruling the city feels like sitting on a ticking time bomb.

9 days left - Meet the protagonist

Jan Xiaoli has warm brown skin and dark hair that he wears in a short half-pony. He’s tall and slim (too slim if you ask his mother) and thanks to his military training he can shoot a rifle as well as a bow. He rides an elk called Spot. He doesn’t have much free time but when he has an idle moment, he likes to occupy his hands by carving little figurines out of wood.

At twenty, Jan Xiaoli became the leader of the biggest re-settler city. At twenty-three, he’s still not sure why people follow him, but he’s determined to do his best not to disappoint them. He cares about his city more than he cares about his own well-being, his only desire is to serve his people. Until he meets the Vulrure and everything he knows about the world and himself is shaken.
