Michael babygirl, I apologize now for the close-up screenshots of your mouth I am going to put on the internet. Call Neil if you have issues with it, it's his fault.

so this thought isn't very well formed yet but I wanted to know how the people who's been on here since circa 2012 thinks about how the nature of fandom discourse has changed or stay the same. How does the new good omens/ofmd/what we do in the shadows (??? is that the third one???) triumvirate stack up with 2012 OG superwholock whose name I can finally say out loud without wanting to lock myself in a fridge? Is it as insane? does it even qualify? To me I think it doesn't because like. tumblr really is the best site out there for fandom culture and I know there's a whole lot of very hot takes in the ofmd fandom being made on tiktok or insta now instead, and i've dipped my feet there a bit, and it doesn't feel the same. idk. superwholock entrenched every corner of this shithole to the point it leaked out to other sites. but sometimes i see posts there like 'i've never watched a show before that has altered my brain chemistry this much' and the james franco "first time?" meme pops in my head and how time is a circle that is, in this case, a decade long lol. what are we thinking about the recent generation of discourse.

i am absolutely here for people looking ridiculously (endearing) in-depth to every tiny detail in S2 but for my money i think aziraphale has just been finding every excuse he can in the last 4 years to push acceptable social boundaries and touch crowley at every conceivable opportunity. like sure he might have had the foresight to do it to calm crowley. but to me it's much more likely he is going too insane in his head at the prospect of being able to touch crowley to have space for that level of foresight like bastard is clearly doing it for his own enjoyment while squealing like a teenage girl and trying to outwardly act cool about it like he does it all the time when they both know they DON'T
welcome back to alex's unhinged meta corner, today's topic: the chest touch at the pub. that scene has me in a chokehold for some reason and i still cannot stop thinking about it.
the first thing i wanna talk about is crowley's reaction, since this is the shorter part. he did not expect aziraphale to reach out to him like this and freezes for a second while aziraphale happily chatters away.
they were both walking and the hand on his chest stops him, so he comes to a stop right next to him while he was slightly behind him before that. his gaze also snaps to aziraphale's face, who is very much not looking at him.
Tumblr media
they were having a conversation, but the touch essentially shuts crowley up and zira leaves him to get their drinks.
now, my question is why aziraphale does it. sure, it could just be an absent gesture since they're in a crowded place, just that he has never really done so before. i think it was very much planned, like asking crowley to dance and grabbing his hand later on.
a second before he actually reaches out, he also looks back to check whether crowley is where he thinks he is. that is the only time he does that, he was busy looking for a free table and miracles them one when he cannot find one - the look back is deliberate. especially since crowley is practically glued to his side, he has no need for confirmation, he can feel him brushing against him while walking.
Tumblr media
the hand motion he does gets me, too. he is busy fidgeting with his hands like normal and has them clasped in front of him. aziraphale lifts them once he gets to "that is precisely the point", yet also already moves it slightly towards crowley, realizes he miscalculated where exactly he/his chest is, looks to check, then looks away again before actually touching him. am i reading too much into it? maybe.
i think it is his version of a little temptation. not only does it make crowley's brain short-circuit for a second, he also gets them their drinks and is now (or so aziraphale hopes) a bit calmer and will take the news aziraphale is about to give him better. the conversation at the cafe did not go entirely as planned, after all.
additionally, something i am not sure if other people have noticed or not is that aziraphale does not just touch crowley, it is a caress. he moves his hand down his chest.
the movement in order:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
bar girl unfortunately moves in front of them, but you can clearly see the way his hand takes. to give you a direct comparison of the starting and end point:
Tumblr media
a good point of reference is crowley's bolo tie but also the angle of aziraphale's arm while it is still visible.
the best part, in my opinion, is that aziraphale puts his hand right on top of crowley's heart. i think the symbolic importance of that is pretty clear and does not require any more explanation, although it makes me want to throw myself into a river. but that's by the by.
to summarize, aziraphale caresses crowley's heart chest to get him to calm down and not go insane over the news he is about to give him. he is also simply a bastard and knows exactly what he is doing to crowley.
as always, this is me going nuts with analysis, but i'm also curious to hear other people's thoughts on this.
don't tell my therapist about my unhinged meta posts or she will probably be very concerned for my mental wellbeing

Fucking. Galaxy brain take. I had a niggling that this whole season felt off somehow, tonally and plot wise, but you had the intelligence to voice it in words. This makes so much sense. Also, my humble morsel of contribution to your "Maggie isn't real" theory: Nina, only rational person in the entire show, couldn't be fully brainwashed, questioning everything all the time, referred to Maggie as "angel". It's done so off-handedly you can chalk it up to an awww moment that yeah they are metaphorical stand ins for Crowley and Aziraphale! But taken with everything, knowing her character, and also the name just being such a strikingly out of nowhere throwaway sticking out like a sore thumb, I interpret it as either a) unconsciously Nina has picked up on Something Off or b) ham-fistedly crammed in by Metatron to really push Crowley. I also love the idea that we were specifically shown the "flashbacks" because those are the ones being edited by Metatron which has direct influence on how they act now - e.g. Aziraphale wanting heaven again because he remembers the way Crowley looked when he created the stars. The flashback sequences didn't make sense to me before I read the theory because I'm like. This only tangentially relates to whatever is going on in the present. S1 flashbacks was one long cold open that helped establish their relationship for the first time viewer, and both sowed seeds to later pluck from and reaped the rewards of present day call backs. But S2 had so many holes it only works to see them as the pots for seed sowing.
EDIT: I had some brain blast moments in the shower I need to write down; might be a little repetitive of the first theory but w/e:
When we see the flashback scenes, they're specifically Aziraphale's memory of them. They are conjured up as Aziraphale's memories of these incidents. We see Job because Gabriel randomly said a line God said, which didn't even answer the question because the question was "what was the first thing you remember" and what he said was 2500 Before Christ not Before Creation, and by the time he was done this vivid memory sequence Crowley had left ages ago because he's not experiencing the same thing. A little weird when I watched it at the time because I'm like, why was that necessary, the end bit, where we're shown Crowley just quietly and inexplicably left? Time has passed. Aziraphale was having a whole episode in his mind. He was "reminded" that Crowley was Good and Lonely for it. This particular memory also served to remind Aziraphale how terrible Gabriel was as an Archangel, and thus maybe if he was Archangel things could be sunshine and rainbows!
And what about the clue he follows? It takes him to Edinburgh. It's the same - he went to Edinburgh on his own and remembered how Crowley helped Wee Morag but got punished for it (though when he fell down that sinkhole the tone is very unconcerned, weird), how vain Gabriel is. And who gave him this clue? Maggietron.
1941 was specifically conjured because Shax, hitchhiking and getting Aziraphale alone, mentioned Furfur. Crowley saved him, his books, him again, they had a lovely time, but they almost got found out. It was a near thing. But most importantly, Crowley confessed he trusted him, and Aziraphale knew he would always come through for him, and this gives him the confidence that Crowley would follow him to heaven if he asked.
All these incidences Aziraphale is alone or ends up by himself. These are his memories being brought back a little tweaked (in mind and/or reality) to sow discord, in addition to whatever Metatron's messing with at the present.
TLDR Re: Flashbacks: 1) Crowley was happy as an angel. 2) Crowley is lonely now, but still Good whilst Gabriel (upper management) sucks. 3) Crowley being Good gets punished in hell. 4) Crowley trusts Aziraphale and will always follow him. In conclusion, Aziraphale needs to "restore" Crowley as an angel, the two of them guide heaven together with their True Goodness, and Crowley will follow him to heaven. The flashbacks, messed with and planted by maggietron, subtly tilt Aziraphale towards the direction of returning to heaven.
Maggie and Nina's role in the previous season. Maggie was one of the satanic nuns that actively helped in delivering the anti-christ. She was on the demon's side. Nina was also a satanic nun, but inadvertently caused havoc in satan's plans by bumbling up the baby switch which ended up saving the world. The idea of characters being mirrors is quite prominent, I think, in Good Omens: Aziraphale and Crowley, Beelzebub and Gabriel, God and Satan (the song "I'll Be Your Mirror" by the Velvet Underground mentioned by Neil Gaiman but that might be too tangential). Maggie and Nina, though, aren't each other's mirrors. They're their past character's mirrors. Maggie is still trying to cause chaos, only now she's on heaven's side. Nina is helping the world/story again, just that this time she's not bumbling it up but being very rational and asking questions about what's happening. The only thing she's bumbling is her relationship, which deteriorated so fast and so dramatically and given to us in the visual form of WRITTEN NOTES (metatron margins lol) that it was honestly odd to me why so much attention was paid to it, in screen time and visual effect. I would also argue she bumbled by saying "angel" at the end, but that's metatron's fault, and her bumbling is honestly a Clue. And the effect of having their names be their character's names as well is meta in a, blurring the lines between fiction and reality kind of way, which also Smells Clueish.
How did Maggie and Nina meetcute? Coffeshop AU + stuck in a room together. We're shown that Aziraphale and Crowley gets a lot of their human ideas from books and film, and I'm willing to bet metatron has similar tendencies AND I'm doubling down that he read a fanfic LMAO and thought so this is what humans do! It would explain why this whole season felt like watching a 66k fic unfold!
Something something this thought isn't fully formed yet but something something Agnes Nutter's second book being or connected to the book of life and its destruction created an opportunity for metatron to usurp something something blah
The Magic Trick You Didn’t See: Being An Analysis of Good Omens Season 2
(or: Neil Gaiman, Your Brain is Gorgeous But I Have Cracked Your Sneaky Little Code And Have You Dead To Rights*) (*Maybe)
***
Soooooo I just spent the last 48 hours having a BREATHTAKING GALAXY BRAIN EPIPHANY about Good Omens Season 2 and feverishly writing a fuckin16,000 word essay about the incredible magic trick that @neil-gaiman pulled off.
Yes, it’s long, but I PROMISE your brains will explode. Do you want to know how magic works? Do you want to know what Metatron’s deal is (I’m like 99% sure of this and it’s EXTREMELY FUCKING GOOD)? Do you want to know about the Mystery of the Vanishing Eccles Cakes and the big fat beautiful clue I found in the opening credits? Do you go through the whole inventory of Chekov’s Firearm & Heavy Artillery Discount Warehouse?
Here is the essay, go read it: https://docs.google.com/document/d/193IXS11XN46lziHRb6eUpM17yK0BQkRqke1Wh64A_e0/ When ur done u can tell me I’m an insane crackpot, and u know what, i won’t even be offended
In case you don’t know whether you want to bother reading the whole enormous thing on google docs, I’ve put the first couple sections of it under the cut. JUST TRUST ME OKAY, HEAR ME OUT, THIS IS VERY EXTREMELY COOL, NEIL IS GOOD AT HIS JOB–
Keep reading

they were pretty considerate i guess to drop the whole thing on a friday so we at least have the weekend to process before going back out there and pretend we haven't been emotionally devastated into pits of despair operating as mere husks of our former selves like "a nightingale sang in berkeley square" playing from a damaged off key grand piano sitting alone in a deserted theatre under post-apocalyptic disrepair

crowley referenced nightingales in the last ep; does that mean in season 1 ep 6 they were so in love they actually heard the song as well??? just coming from nowhere the song manifests - maybe because the two of them sometimes have a view of humanity that is entrenched in fiction (what with their ideas on how one falls in love based on movies and books) (relatable lol), and so in that lovely moment it just seems natural for there to be sweet music playing as the backdrop to their love. kind of like that idea that as celestial/demonic beings things just work as they think it does, not because it actually works like that. reality bends to their expectations. so, love scene gets a love song and they both hear it.
