THIS. 20ish years ago, some new bipolar med came out and was being advertised everywhere, and suddenly, myself and EVERYONE I KNEW was being 'diagnosed' by a magazine insert asking particular questions to a subset of individuals already predisposed to answering in the positive: college-kids. The questions?
Has there ever been a period of time when you were not your usual self and...
You felt so good or hyper that other people thought you were not your normal self or were so hyper that you got into trouble?
You were so irritable that you shouted at people or started fights or arguments?
You felt much more self-confident than usual?
You got much less sleep than usual and found you didn’t really miss it?
You were much more talkative or spoke much faster than usual?
Thoughts raced through your head or you couldn’t slow your mind down?
You were so easily distracted by things around you that you had trouble concentrating or staying on track?
You had much more energy than usual?
You were much more social or outgoing than usual, for example, you telephoned friends in the middle of the night?
You were much more interested in sex than usual?
You did things that were unusual for you or that other people might have thought were excessive, foolish, or risky?
Spending money got you or your family into trouble?
2. Any of those ever happen at the same time?
3. How much did it fuck your life up?
None
A little
Some
A lot
SO MUCH
4. Anyone else in your family fucked in the head? (ha!)
So let's be clear:
Most of the things in that list happen to most people, a lot of the time, ESPECIALLY in young adulthood. Most of the things mess you up a fair bit, and if you have no coping skills, no support network, and no modeling of how to behave when shit is spiraling downhill? They can mess you up SO MUCH SO that your mood and behavior and thusly situation are progressively and near-permanently wrecked. Still doesn't mean you're bipolar.
Pro tip if you see at least 50 people say "wait that's not normal??" In the comments of some neurodivergent relatability post then it probably is, in fact, normal. Daydreaming to songs is normal, I promise you. Most everything about being neurodivergent is normal, it's just the degree to which it affects you and your life that makes it abnormal.

It's gonna be such a funny mess when Donald Trump dies of a stroke on April 1st, 2024.
Naturally everybody will think it's fake because of the date only to lose their minds (both positively and negatively based on their opinion of trump) when realizing it's real
There will be massive celebrations in the streets and on social media and lots of predictable "don't speak ill of the dead" discourse about those celebrations
Weird evangelicals will pull some weird number trick talking about how Jesus was conceived on April 1st and that makes Trump a sort of messiah and people will make fun of that
The Republicans (after they're done with the faux-sadness and faux-outrage) will stomp over each other to be his successor but none of them will succeed. They'll tear each other apart and have no single nominee for the November elections.
There will be discourse about if Biden and the living former presidents should go to his funeral (they won't, he was a traitor insurrectionist)
The Ukraine-Russia War immediately goes in favor of Ukraine as morale in the Kremlin is reduced. China similarly backs off from its threats on Taiwan.
Ten thousand new memes are made, some sticking around for years to come.
Not a month later a bunch of unofficial biographies of Trump hit the bookshelves, many with new details about just how awful he was.

The trolley problem is a beautiful construct, because it MAKES us look at the situation at hand, and acknowledge the fact that some times, hard, awful choices must be made. In doing so it makes us aware that sometimes those hard choices are because of previous choices, and so we should be careful of our choices and their future consequences. It also makes us try to be aware that sometimes a trolley problem illuminates the fact that we should attempt to deconstruct the WHOLE DAMNED THING that SPAWNED this awful decision in the first place. And also: If a real life trolley problem exists, YOU MUST COMPREHEND THE FACT THAT NOT MAKING A DECISION IS A CHOICE AND IT HAS CONSEQUENCES. Insisting that "you will only participate if" there is a third, morally pure choice means you are being willfully blind to the fact that YOU ARE ALREADY PARTICIPATING. As an above poster so eloquently put it:
THERE ARE STILL PEOPLE ON THE TRACKS.
You know I used to think "tumblr's absolute refusal to actually engage with the Trolley Problem in favor of insisting that there must be a third, morally pure option that doesn't require them to make a hard decision and anyone who asks them to make a binary choice is just a short-sighted idiot is really fucking annoying, but I guess it's not actually doing any harm".
Anyway that was before we asked tumblr at large to decide between "guy aiding a genocide but making progress elsewhere" and "guy who would actively and enthusiastically participate in a genocide and would also make everything else much, much worse for everyone elsewhere" and the response was that there must be a third, morally pure option that doesn't require them to make a hard decision and that anyone who asks them to make a binary choice is a short-sighted idiot.

Me: In November, either Trump or Biden will win. There is no third outcome, so we should vote accordingly for the option that will mitigate the most harm.
The people in my notes: Oh, so you think direct action is bad? You think voting is literally the only thing we can do? You hate activism? You love Biden and endorse everything he does and think nobody should criticize him ever? You think voting will just magically solve all our problems? You think protesting is wrong? You love the status quo and think everything is fine?

Vote. Vote blue. I know he's not the best. But he's better than Trump. Harm reduction is still a thing.
"Harm reduction for who?" some of my even-more-marginalized friends ask, and the only answer for them that I have is: Me.
It may not seem to make a whit of difference for you at all. So do it for me, because if it ever comes down to not making a whit of difference for me but a world of difference for you, I will ask you which one I should pick, and I'll do it. For you. We're not always voting in our own immediate self interests, but for the someday betterment for everyone. I know it simplifies everything to a faintly gross extent and I'm sorry for that, but let's be clear: all of the candidates that *COULD ACTUALLY* win a presidency are bad in some ways. They're all NON-ideal. Yes. No argument. *AND* one of them will still likely actively kill *EVEN MORE OF US*. So let's vote for NOT him. AND keep working for EVEN BETTER.
I am not unaware of the negatives of Biden's presidency, and I am not trying to elide or forgive them. I'm reblogging posts about the Biden administration because I think it's really important that potential voters in the US realize that there is, in fact, a very big difference between the two parties, and voting for Biden is not just damage control--it actually does good. It's okay, you can actually feel a little excited about making meaningful progress, and not just hold your nose.
He's been very unflashy. He's not a great leader, he's not charismatic and he knows it, but he's an adroit politician and administrator, and he's been getting things done. Letting Trump win at this point would be tantamount to throwing the entire country on the bonfire. It's not a choice between bad and bad, it's a choice between meaningful, if imperfect, progress and fucking doom.
