i would say "The Boy and The Heron is great, everyone should go see it" but to be completely honest, it's not a film for everyone. it IS a fantastic film, please don't misunderstand me! but it requires patience and attention and a second viewing to really grasp what's going on

the majority of the character's relationships and histories are meant to be inferred from character's dialogue to one another. you have to piece a lot of it together with context clues, as there is ZERO unnecessary exposition (which i respect immensely)

i feel there's also some historical context needed, because you have to remember it's a period piece, so you need to remember that to understand why some of the characters behave the way they do (one in particular)

but yes, definitely go see it if you have time to think about it, as it is a really well thought out film, and an interesting exercise in character analysis through environment!

The thing that blows my mind is that Palamedes and Camilla care so much about Harrow because of Gideon. Gideon had the relationship with them; Palamedes even said that talking to Harrow was like talking to a Ninth house stereotype. Palamedes and Camilla helped Gideon find Harrow when she was passed out; then with Harrow’s permission Gideon stood up for Sixth to the Third house; Gideon ran to them when she was sure Harrow had murdered someone; Gideon went to go apologize to Palamedes when she thought she broken the bro code over Dulcinea; it was Gideon that Palamedes told to tell Camilla his final words; and Gideon worked so hard to keep Camilla out of harms way when she was injured by Cytherea and Harrow had passed out. It was Gideon; Nona the Ninth happened the way it did because Gideon humanized Harrow to them.

harrow the ninth is a very special book. because it straight up just gaslights the reader to the point where you're like "did I read the entire first book wrong? DID I read the first book? WHAT'S GOING ON"

My absolute favorite thing about harrowhark is that under all the robes, veils, and the countless bone-jewelry of her office as reverend daughter, that girl is a jeans-and-a-tshirt with big boots type dyke. A dig in the dirt bitch

thinking abt the subtle yet overwhelming body horror and dysphoria present in Nona the Ninth. I’m not even talking about Ianthe piloting around Naberius’s corpse or Kiriona’s whole. thing.

it’s the subtler shit. imagine you’re Pyrrha. you’re lying awake in bed on a doomed wasteland of a planet and you’re in your dead best friend’s body. in the next room is a kid, and you have no idea who she actually is. she eats pencils and she’s physically weak but when she’s mad she will break her own bones over and over just to communicate her rage. you kind of have feelings for two people living in the same body, and that very situation is killing that very body. You shave your dead best friend’s face every day. You will never have your own body back.

had a locked tomb nightmare the other night that atn was dropped and it ended up being the entirety of gtn from babs perspective and i still havent recovered

going insane thinking about the harrow and palamedes friendship. harrow, who has never met another necromancer her age forming a bizarro 3D chess rivalry while pal worries about her safety at every possible turn. harrow, who is up to her eyebrows in paranoia and secrecy, trusting the sixth house with gideon unconscious and hurt, letting them into the ninth house quarters unsupervised. if “i cannot conceive of a universe without you in it” is goth for i love you, “death first to vultures and scavengers” has got to be goth for i love you (platonic). pal’s first reaction when harrow comes into his bubble in the river is to scoop her up in a hug, and at this point she doesn’t remember anything about him because cutting out all her memories of gideon is impossible without cutting out memories of the sixth, but she still makes him a skelehand to inhabit anyway. when harrow’s memories are finally whole, she tells dulcinea she couldn’t face pal knowing that his pen pal girlfriend died on her account, but the next time she “faces” him, palamades’s soul is in someone else’s body and harrow’s body is full of nona’s soul. he spends six months protecting and caring for harrow’s body (and nona obv), believing in the possibility of bringing her back to it the same way cam believed in him. “god, do you know i miss harrow terribly.” and by the time harrow comes back to her body at the very end of ntn, pal is gone forever, fully pauled. the last time harrow and palamades see each other as their complete selves is in canaan house, alive and unlyctored. two of the smartest and loneliest people in the solar system meet each other in the worst of circumstances and spend the rest of the story dancing around each other as fragments of themselves, trying to care about each other in the interim but never fully meeting like they did the first time. a friendship made almost entirely of missing the other person. “do you know i miss harrow terribly.” god. i need to lie down

one of my favorite things about gideon is the characterization of "born 2 be jock 😎🔥💪 forced 2 be goth 😔☠️🦴" like quite literally one of the funniest character choices i've seen an author make and pull off

I've been having a hard time with art this past month (difference in ambition vs skill etcetc) so while struggling with a project I was wishing for something simple to draw, and then (because i'm always thinking about the locked tomb i guess) I was thinking about how funny the discrepancy is between everyone's first impression of the ninth and what's actually going on inside gideon's head. also the whole thing with harrow somehow having more rizz (3 girlfriends!) than gideon. so i made this for my own amusement:
