Lunatic - Onley James (Necessary Evils, book 6)
Synopsis
Every psychopath in the Mulvaney family has a role to play. Archer Mulvaney is the gambler, a drunken reprobate making his living as a high-stakes poker player. Very few people know the real Archer, not even his brothers. But there is one man who knows far too much.
Mackenzie Shepherd spends his days photographing endangered wildlife. He’s also the brother of a psychopath and son to the woman who literally wrote the book on raising one. When his mother asks him to head a secret government project, it seems like the perfect excuse to run away from his life.
But running from his past has Mac colliding straight into Archer. And that’s a problem. For this project to be successful, Mac and Archer have to agree on every decision, and the two see eye-to-eye on nothing. Except, maybe the sex. The sex is off the charts.
When Mac’s old life comes back to haunt him, Archer insists on putting their differences aside to help keep him safe. But Mac, like Archer, is used to solving things on his own. Can they finally stop fighting each other to find the truth, or is their relationship the next thing on the endangered species list?
Lunatic is a filthy hot, enemies to lovers, psychopath romance with an HEA and no cliffhangers. It features a sexy, roguish degenerate and a hunky bleeding heart ginger who love how much they hate each other. As always, there’s gratuitous violence, very dark humor, more blood than a slaughterhouse, and enough heat to melt your metaphorical undies. This is book six in the Necessary Evils series. Each book follows a different couple.
My Thoughts
Archer has a very particular part to play – and he plays it well. To the rest of his brothers and extended family, he’s a degenerate alcoholic gambler (granted, a very successful one). But to his father, everyone else at the Watch, and most importantly, to Mac, Archer is cunning, calculated, and ruthless. But with Mac, and only Mac, Archer is unbearably soft.
Mac knows what he’s getting into with Archer. Growing up the twin brother of a high-functioning sociopath, he knows that Archer may not be able to express certain emotions. And Mac is more than okay with that. Because he gets the version of Archer that stays hidden from the world – the real Archer. And he’ll take that over expressions of empathy or regret any day. Especially when his life is at risk.
There are killers after Mac, and it’s up to team Mulvaney to figure out why, and, obviously, eliminate the threat. And it goes deep. And dark. And so, so creepy. And even though Archer and Mac would kill for each other, it’s Archer’s relationship with Noah that really captured my attention.
Archer trusts Noah, loves Noah in his own way. Noah’s the one that Archer reaches for when he wants care and attention. While all the Mulvaney brother’s are affection-starved to a certain degree, Archer’s the one who wants to do something about it. And he did so by trusting Noah to care for him, look our for him, and befriend him. For all the walls Archer keeps up all the time, other than Mac, Noah’s the only one to really see the real Archer. And there’s something about that that really hit me hard.
As Mac’s situation resolves itself, we’re coming to the end of this series. And if it’s going where I think it’s going, it’s going to be one hell of a wild ride.

Whiskers and Warrants - Jinty James (Norwegian Forest Cat Cafe Cozy Mysteries, book 3)
Synopsis
Lauren and Zoe sign up for advanced latte art class. What they didn’t bargain on was … murder!
Cat café owner, Lauren Crenshaw, and her cousin, Zoe, attend their first advanced latte art class, excited to learn intricate designs. But when their world-famous instructor is murdered, they decide to investigate!
Annie, Lauren’s gorgeous Norwegian Forest Cat, helps in the sleuthing department as well.
Zoe is also busy crocheting a coffee cozy to sell online, and Lauren continues to knit her never-ending scarf.
While Lauren’s romance with Mitch, the police detective, blossoms, Zoe despairs of meeting ‘the right guy’.
But when Annie finds a clue in the café, everything is put on hold while the trio investigate the murder.
Who is the killer? One of the other students? The barista’s business partner? Or a mysterious vagrant that one of the students claim they saw?
This is a humorous, clean, cat cozy mystery with female amateur sleuths – and a gorgeous Norwegian Forest Cat!
My Thoughts
Another mystery, and another slow start. I’m starting to get the hang of the patterns of these books, and while I still can’t say I’m all that emotionally invested in Lauren or Zoe, I am very much so attached to their Norwegian Forest Cat, Annie.
While I find it takes too long to get to the murder, and some of the dialogue mildly daunting, what I do love is that these books are such easy reads. And sometimes, my brain just needs to fall into something that requires little to no mental energy. So far, this series is absolutely perfect for that.
What I lack in connection with the characters (Zoe drives me insane. All surface, no substance), I make up for in easy reading, and intriguing murder mysteries. It’s the mysteries themselves (and Annie, obviously), that will keep me coming to this series. And I’m more than okay with that.

Mad Man - Onley James (Necessary Evils, book 5)
Synopsis
Avi Mulvaney is many things. Son. Twin. Owner of the fashion label, Gemini. Murderous psychopath. Together, he and his brother, Asa, make one brutally efficient monster, ridding the world of predators who victimize the innocent. History proves Avi and Asa don’t do well apart, but their father has decided to test that theory.
Felix Navarro knows exactly who he is. Baby brother. Fashionista. Vigilante. While he’s not happy that his big brother married a Mulvaney, the union has its perks. Like a paid internship with Gemini. But all good things come with a cost and, for Felix, that’s enduring Avi Mulvaney each day, which inevitably leads to thinking about him every night.
Felix doesn’t like Avi. He’s cocky, condescending, overbearing, and inappropriate. He’s also sexy, brilliant, and twice as lethal as Felix. Still, Felix loathes him. Even if he keeps letting him kiss him. And touch him. Even if he slipped just once. It was still hate sex, and it would never happen again. Ever.
Except, Avi’s being sent to help take down a dangerous crime ring and he’s ordered Felix to come along. Felix has vowed to stay strong. To remember he hates Avi. But they’re trapped together and there’s only one bed, and it’s so hard to hate Avi in the dark when he’s whispering how Felix belongs to him. Felix belongs to no man, but Avi is determined. He has one week to prove to Felix that he’s the exception to his rule. After all, who says no to a Mulvaney?
Mad Man is a scorchingly hot, intense, enemies to lovers, psychopath romance with an HEA and no cliffhangers. It features a dirty talking, brutally vicious killer and a sharp tongued murderous fashionista who are both too stubborn for their own good. As always, there’s gratuitous violence, very dark humor, enough blood to film the final scene in the movie Carrie, and enough heat to melt your panties. This is book 5 in the Necessary Evils series. Each book follows a different couple.
TAGS: psychopath, enemies-to-loves, dark humor, much violence, jealousy, bad boys doing bad things, long distance snark, only one bed, hate sex, more hate sex, hate sex that becomes apathetic sex then maybe something like love, if two killers are better than one what’s three killers, Avi is jealous, Asa is preoccupied, August is still August, Lucas is frazzed, Archer is still drunk, Thomas is at his wits end, Aiden is still in denial, Noah is still the psychopath whisperer and Adam is still a dick.
My Thoughts
Avi and Asa haven’t been apart since they were children. But now with Avi taking Felix with him on a mission to help their wayward brother, Aiden, things are bound to be interesting.
Felix is feisty, extremely lethal, and he hates Avi with an extreme passion. But that really only makes him more attractive to Avi. Especially when it’s apparent that Felix doesn’t hate him at all.
But Felix is deathly afraid of losing those closest to him. He built walls so high, and so thick, not even his brother, Jericho, can reach him sometimes. But Avi is determined to break those walls down, and to show Felix that he is Avi’s most important person – other than Asa.
What’s fascinating about this book is the glimpse into Aiden’s life. Aiden, the Mulvaney son we know the least about – just that his relationship with Thomas is extremely strained. Aiden may want as much distance between himself and Thomas as possible, but he’s still Mulvaney through and through – taking out the trash. And when his case captures Felix and Avi’s attention, the three of them team up to do what they do best.
And between all that, Avi and Felix give their relationship a chance. Felix brings his walls down, and he lets Avi in. They share their deepest insecurities, thoughts, and fears. And they vow to continue to communicate their needs to each other – even when Felix promises to be very, very bossy.
As each Mulvaney finds their partner, I’m more and more fascinated and enthralled by these vigilante psychopaths. I guess there are few things I love more than morally grey vigilante murderous psychopaths. Who knew?

Headcase - Onley James (Necessary Evils, book 4)
Synopsis
Asa Mulvaney is half of a psychopathic whole. He and his twin brother live together, party together…kill together. In the Mulvaney family, murder is the family business and business is good. When an experiment separates Asa and his brother, Asa is forced to navigate the world on his own for the first time in his life.
Zane Scott is a small-time crime blogger and amateur sleuth, but he dreams of a byline in a major paper someday. When he winds up at a boring fundraiser beside Asa Mulvaney, they share an intensely passionate encounter that leaves Zane with an ache in his chest and a story idea that could make his career dreams a reality.
At a nearby college, a cluster of suicides isn’t what it seems. When Asa’s father asks him to look into it, he sees the perfect opportunity to see his little crime reporter again. And Asa needs to see him again. Zane’s suspicious of Asa’s motives, but he won’t say no to a chance to peek behind the Mulvaney family curtains.
As the two unravel a sinister plot, Asa’s obsession with Zane grows and Zane finds being Asa’s sole focus outweighs almost anything, maybe even his career–which is good for Asa because loving a Mulvaney is a full-time job. Can he convince Zane that he’s worth navigating a family of psychopaths and his pathologically jealous twin, or will Zane learn the hard way that the Mulvaney boys always get what they want? Always.
Headcase is a high heat, intense, lovers-to-frenemies, psychopath romance with an HEA and no cliffhangers. It features an obsessive, calculating psychopath and a wannabe reporter who will stop at nothing to earn himself a major byline. As always, there’s gratuitous violence, very dark humor, enough killers to fill an auditorium, and enough heat to melt your kindle. This is book 4 in the Necessary Evils series. Each book follows a different couple.
TAGS: psychopath romance, Asa is bored, Avi is jealous, Zane is pretty, Adam is still a dick, August is… August, Aiden’s still missing, Lucas is concerned, Atticus plays den mother to a gaggle of murderous young adults, Asa wants Zane but knows he suspects he’s a killer, Zane wants a story but can’t keep from falling into bed with his target, extra dark humor, found family, So. Many. Murderers, mysteries abound, bad boys doing bad things and each other, high non-relationship angst, low relationship angst, shmoop, fluff, smut.
My Thoughts
Zane has dreams of becoming a crime reporter, and he’s spent months following the trail of bodies that seem to surround the Mulvaneys and their partners. When he encounters Asa at an event, he thinks he’s found his in. But Zane is in for way, way more than he bargained for.
When discovering the Mulvaney family secret – they’re the psychopath sons of an eccentric (and apparently very handsome) billionaire who take out the trash that slip through the criminal justice cracks – he doesn’t expect things to hit so close to home. But they do, and Zane has to rely on Asa to get him through.
Zane leans heavily on Asa. Asa keeps him going, keeps him from spiraling. He also keeps him rather blood thirsty. Zane’s brother was the victim of a sick and twisted game run by sick and twisted people (even by Mulvaney standards). And Zane won’t rest until they’re all taken out. And Asa won’t rest until Zane gets his closure.
The start of their relationship is a little rough around the edges, but they soon build a foundation on communication and honesty. Zane communicates his needs, and Asa communicates his desires. They find a balance that works for them. And they make it work. Zane even manages to win over Asa’s twin, Avi, who is more territorial of Asa than anyone else. And considering Avi’s fixation with Jericho’s brother, Felix, whatever lies ahead for the four of them is bound to be intense.

Damaged - Onley James (Necessary Evils, book 3.5)
Synopsis
The first time Dimitri Castallanos experienced obsession, he committed a felony. He was five. Dimitri is a psychopath. And he’s still obsessed with just one person. Arlo Miller was born a victim, raised as his father’s punching bag and his mother’s scapegoat. Dimitri was his only protection, and they took him away.
As children they clung to each other. As adults, they pretend neither remembers, while both harbor secret crushes. Dimitri hides his feelings behind a mask of indifference. Arlo hides his by falling for very bad men.
When one of those men confronts Dimitri, this time Arlo commits a felony. Murder. But Dimitri won’t allow Arlo to take the fall. With the help of Dimitri’s mother and seven psychopaths, they now have twenty-four hours to fake an alibi, hide a body, and confess their true feelings for each other once and for all. Which is harder? Falling in love or getting away with murder?
NOTE: This can be read as a stand-alone but these characters do make a cameo in Headcase (Necessary Evils, #4).
My Thoughts
In Damaged, we see a snippet of the life of Calliope and her son, Dimitri. We know Calliope as the wizard behind the curtain – the woman who can hack any and every system possible. She is a huge part of the success behind Thomas Mulvaney’s extracurricular activities. And her son is a psychopath.
Dimitri and Arlo really are adorable in their own way – as much as they can be when they’re trying to get away with murder. But what starts as a life or death situation turns into Dimitri and Arlo establishing their relationship. And that, in turn, leads into what appears to be a snapshot of things to come.
The rest of this series is going to be a wild ride, and I’m quite excited to see how Dimitri and Arlo fit in with the rest of the rag tag Mulvaney/Navarro vigilante crew.
