What’s included in the kit?
V7 100mm Holder
The NiSi V7 100mm Filter Holder Kit with True Color NC CPL and Lens Cap is the most advanced 100mm filter holder we have ever created, with a refined design based on feedback from photographers. The V7 allows for the easy use of up to three 100mm wide, 2mm thick filters along with an included brand new NiSi True Color Circular Polarizer Filter, and has no vignetting at 16mm with wide-angle lenses on full-frame.
It is made from aviation-grade aluminum with single element processing by CNC machine, and the matte black frosted finish on the surface minimizes reflections. The V7 kit comes complete with the 100mm filter holder, an ultra-slim True Color CPL, four adapter rings for the most popular wide-angle lenses (67mm, 72mm, 77mm, and 82mm), a lens cap, and a storage pouch. The V7 features a unique rotation wheel design, so the CPL filter can be rotated independently with filters still in place via a cog on the back of the filter holder.
This version of the V7 features the brand new True Color CPL that prevents the yellow cast introduced from most CPLs. The True Color CPL features our proprietary NiSi Pro Nano Coating helping to reduce unwanted reflections and provides a waterproof and oil-resistant layer to assist in the cleaning of unwanted fingerprints, dust, and water stains.
Our new Point to Point CPL Design allows for easier guided installation of the CPL into the main 82mm adapter. By lining the white markers on the CPL up with the white mark on the main adapter and twisting, you can easily secure the CPL in place, and remove it with little effort.
Our unique clip system is designed to grip only along the edges of the filter avoiding contact with the surface of the filter. Filters are easy to insert, and contact with a filter’s main surfaces are avoided, particularly when using graduated filters, whose effect can be adjusted to better suit changing lighting conditions or creative demands by sliding them up or down within a filter slot.
Use of the NiSi V7 100mm Filter Holder can be easily accomplished by first screwing the included 82mm adapter ring onto a lens with 82mm front filter threads. Step-up rings are included to allow the adapter ring to be used with lenses that have 67mm, 72mm, or 77mm front filter threads, with additional step-up rings available separately for lenses with 49mm, 52mm, 55mm, 58mm, or 62mm front filter threads. After being fitted onto the adapter ring, the filter holder’s pull-and-release locking pin helps to provide a reliable connection that allows the holder to be rotated 360°. To further secure the position of the filter holder, it features a lock that can be activated by rotating a small wheel around the release pin which prevents any rotation of the filter holder.
Adapter rings for lenses with 86mm or 95mm front filter threads are also separately available. The combination of either of those adapter rings with the filter holder cannot accommodate a NiSi 86mm circular polarizer filter; however, a polarization effect can instead be obtained by placing a separately available, 100mm wide, 2mm thick polarizer filter between one pair of the filter holder’s slots.
The V7 kit includes a push-on lens cap that will protect the CPL while still connected to a lens and a padded holder pouch for safe storage and transport.
Natural Night
The NiSi Natural Night Filter is our first filter exclusive for night photography.  Between mercury vapor, sodium, Low CRI streetlights, there are many undesirable wavelengths of light that pollute the night sky. The glow from these can keep your camera from seeing the sky properly and effect your night images. Because of this, NiSi has created the Natural Night Filter to block the most common wavelengths of light pollution.
Star Soft
The NiSi 100x150mm Star Soft Astrophotography Filter is a filter for astrophotography designed to make stars appear bigger and to make constellations stand out. The brighter the star the bigger it will appear. Make the constellations and stars sparkle in your night sky images.
The Star Soft Astrophotography Filter is designed just like a GND filter with the effects full strength on the top 100mm of the filter, while the bottom 50mm is clear with no effect. This will allow placement so the effect can enhance the stars without affecting the foreground. Some photographers tell us they love the effect also on the foreground so the filter can be pushed all the way down in the filter holder to have the effect over the entire scene.
The Star Soft Astrophotography Filter has no loss in light and offers a neutral tone with no added color cast. The filter is compatible with our V6 100mm holders and compatible holder that supports 100mm wide filters at 2mm thickness.
100mm Caddy Filter Pouch
The NiSi Caddy 100mm Filter Pouch for 9 Filters is designed for the NiSi 100mm system filters and will hold 4 x 100x100mm and 5 x 100x150mm.  It features an adjustable cross-body sling strap and can be carried as a shoulder bag, messenger bag or waist bag.  It can be conveniently mounted on a tripod leg for easy access and use and is designed from a lightweight material that protects your filters from scratches.  The pouch can hold up to 9 filters in the combination 4 x 100x100mm and 5 x 100x150mm and features a flip-top design to keep the pouch open when in use.

Summit Creative Tenzing 50L Roll Top Bag - Your next bag?

A new camera bag company, Summit Creative has appeared on the market and they asked me to take a peek at the new bag line and to let you all know my thoughts. I’ll admit that I was a bit hesitant to review the bag since I’ve been with F-Stop Gear for a few years as an ambassador and I have enjoyed that bag and I still do. However, I felt the insight I might be able to provide due to that partnership would be valuable to someone looking at purchasing the bag. I will say I’m staying with my F-Stop for now and I’ll explain why at the end.
First Thoughts
Upon receiving the bag I was immediately surprised by a few things:
There are lots of pockets in area’s of the bag where you normally wouldn’t see them, namely the shoulder straps and waist strap have pockets.
There are lots of padding on the shoulder straps and back area of the bag.
Tons of adjustable straps, including shoulders, securing and pocket size adjustments
Good expandability, including the roll-top expansion and bag depth expansions
After looking it over I packed up my gear and took it for a test spin on some local trails in Palos Verdes, CA. Check out the video below of my thoughts after wearing the bag for a while and take a look at all the bells and whistles that this bag has.

So what are my thoughts on this bag? As I said in the video, I think this is a great bag! It was very comfortable to wear, especially after adjusting to my body. It has great expandability for those bigger day hikes where you need to pack more gear. The inside of the bag holds quite a bit of gear comfortably and is easy to customize to fit the gear you need to bring. The 50L model I tried out could easily fit 2 bodies and 3 or 4 lenses if not more.
As I also mentioned in the video, there are a few things that I wish this bag had. I wish there were some smaller pockets in well protected areas for things like batteries, memory cards, small tools and other small items that slide around easily. There are few pockets on the sides and inside the main compartment, but they aren’t ideal for these things that I mentioned. I would recommend a smaller container to hold those items that could be placed in the top of the bag. One thing that I forgot to mention during the video is that it is missing an area to place a water bladder. There is a hole to place a bladder inside the top pocket, but it’s not the ideal size to have a bladder. It would be much better if there was a pocket that could protect the bladder away from other things that might be in that top pocket.
So a question some of you might have is how do I compare it to my F-Stop Gear TILOPA 50L. I still prefer my F-Stop Gear bag for a few reasons. First, F-Stop Gear is a modular system, so I can quickly shift from my 50L bag to my 80L bag without much thought or planning. F-Stop Gear has smaller bags and carriers from that hold all of my small items, star tracker, cleaning tools, batteries, memory cards, etc. This is something that I would miss moving to the Tenzing. Second, my F-Stop Bag has lots of expansion capability as well. It can hold all of my camera gear and an extra jacket, star tracker and more quite comfortably. I will say that the attachment straps for adding your tripod and any other gear to the outside of the bag is very similar between the two bags. F-Stop gear still has a slight advantage in this department due to the numerous strap options available. Summit Creative have also made some additional strap options available to purchase for attaching more gear to the bag securely.
Well there you have it, my thoughts on the new Tenzing 50L Roll Top Bag from Summit Creative. Overall, I am impressed with the new camera bag line. It meets all my photography needs while looking great. If you are in the market for a bag this might be serious contender for your next bag.

During this workshop, Bruce Getty and Chris Crosby will guide you to some of the most interesting areas surrounding the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, some well known and some hidden gems. Beautiful wave action, blooming wildflowers and the Golden Gate Bridge are just a few of the incredible opportunities for translating emotion and vision through our photographic medium. We are dedicated to providing the best instruction on all aspects of the art of landscape photography. Whether you are just beginning or are a seasoned pro, we are ready to help you move forward with your photography.
Curriculum
Curriculum will be catered to each individual’s skill level and may vary from student to student. Below you’ll find some common topics based upon different skill levels.

Physical Requirements
Since this is an infield workshop, some walking will be involved. Most locations are not far from parking areas, however, students need to be ready to be able to walk/hike to get to shooting area and good compositions.
Things To Bring

A sturdy Tripod for wave and wind stability
Filters - Neutral Density Filters and CPL

Head torch (for any night or low light walking and shooting)
Rain cover for camera and camera bag can come in handy in some rare cases of water splash, rain or high wind!
Small Camping Chair or Stool for comfort if standing for long periods is an issue

Many layers – As the afternoons wear on it can get quite chilly and a jacket is recommended
Comfortable walking shoes or Hiking Shoes/Boots are recommended for wildflowers
Water Shoes are recommended for seascape session. Be prepared to get your feet wet to get the shot.
Food:
Food, Water, and all other essentials. No Food or water will be provided before, during or after the workshop. Plan ahead and have water and snack on hand to keep your energy up.

A few weeks ago I was approached by NiSi to review their new True Color ND-Vario Variable ND Filter. For those that have worked with me you might be cringing now. For those that haven’t, I’m not the biggest fan of Variable ND filters. There I said it. My past experiences with Variable ND filters have been disappointing to say the least. So when NiSi approached me to test and review their new True Color ND-Vario you can imagine that was a little bit hesitant and somewhat skeptical. Nevertheless, I accepted the opportunity to put my money where my mouth was. I’ve been recommending to my students that they stay away from variable ND Filters and it was time to test if this was still sound advice. So, do you think I can change my ways? Well, let’s find out as I share my thoughts and sample images from the test.
Ladies and Gentleman, Full Disclosure
Before we begin I must first disclose that I’m now an Official NiSi Optics USA Ambassador and Reseller. So, yes, my opinions could come with some bias, but I only stand behind product I believe in. I wasn’t forced to NiSi products, I simply went with a superior product that turned into a great relationship with NiSi. If you are interested in hearing why I switched to NiSi please check out my blog where I’ve reviewed and compared NiSi vs other products I’ve used. So without further ado, let’s talk about the NiSi True Color ND-VARIO Pro.
Common issues that variable ND’S have
So as I eluded to in my introduction, I’m not the biggest fan of variable ND filters. My past experience with them have made me stay away from them. On of the most common things you find with Variable ND filters is vignetting as you rotate the filter to add or subtract darkness. Typically the extremes of the filters capability would produce the vignetting or what is commonly called the “X” effect where you see a dark “X” appear in the middle of your frame. They performed decently in the middle of the capability of the filter, but not at the extremes.
One of the other issues found with Variable ND filters is color cast. Often times it is a blue cast, but can also be a magenta, green, or yellow cast of color. This is something you never want in any ND filter as a photographer. You want to have the same color performance with your filters that you would have if you didn’t have them on. They should only darken your exposure and do nothing else to the image quality.
Frist Impressions
As I unboxed the ND-VARIO I was pleasantly surprised by a few things right away. The filter comes with a lens cap and a pouch in addition to a foam cushioned plastic case. That’s 3 forms of protection for your investment. I definitely didn’t get any of these 3 with my past variable ND purchases. I was lucky to get a plastic case, but most of the time you were on your own to protect and transport the filter. The lens cap is a real bonus. It can be used to cover the filter while walking between shots, or just storing the camera in your bag. No need to take off the filter and put it back on to protect the filter from scratching. This is very convenient in the field and will save you time during your workflow.
Another notable mention is the quality of the build. The filter ring is made from high quality aluminum, making it feel very strong, yet be very light in weight. The Knurled ring makes for easy gripping of the filter as your attach and detach the filter from your lens. The filter rotated very easily, but not easily enough that it would spin in a gust of wind or a slight nudge. The friction was just right.
Upon rotation I discovered another win. The ND-VARIO has hard stops at 1 & 5 Stops (Other models available for 5-9 Stops). This means that the filter does not rotate 360 degrees and there are marks on the filter ring to show you where each stop is. While the exact darkening does vary with your focal length and aperture, I found the indicated stop numbers on the ring to be with 1/3 of a stop of accuracy and spot on for most.
Bring on the images already!
OK, OK! I know by now you are ready to see some sample images. So without further ado…here they come. The first set of images were taken late afternoon in Death Valley. I thought this area would a perfect proving ground for the color and detail of the filter. Luck was also on my side due to the clouds that came into frame just before the test. Clouds are a great tool to use for testing the white balance performance of the filter. They are a neutral area during the middle of the day. For this test I used a fixed white balance of Shade so that there would be no variation in the white balance from photo to photo and we could see any color shifts that were taking place. The photos have only been sharpened, noise reduced and profile corrected. You may find a slight difference in exposure from photo to photo. Take a peak at the photos below.
After the first test in Death Valley I found that there was very little color shift. The only color shift I noticed was a extremely light shift to the yellow/red side. So little that it is hardly noticeable. Overall, I would say that the color performance was extremely good from the filter. I didn’t notice any vignetting and I was testing the 82mm version of the filter on my wide angle lens. I did notice a slight polarizing effect in the sky on the picture take at 1 stop, but it wasn’t something I was very worried about. The detail from photo to photo is perfect even at 100% zoom. To be honest, I liked the look of the badlands after putting the filter on, it did provide a very light polarization and controlled the color of the highlighted areas of the badlands.
Test #2
For a second test, to be sure that I was being fair, I went to a local location in the Port of Los Angeles next to the Vincent Thomas Bridge and took some shots during the blue hour. Not only did I think this would be a good test of the white balance, but also a better area for you to see the difference in shutter speeds and the effect it will provide. The water around the bridge was perfect for just that. Again, the white balance for test 2 was shot at a constant “shade” setting in camera to preserve the white balance integrity. See the images below.
As you can see the results of the 2nd test were equally impressive as it relates to white balance and color cast. Virtually no change in color through the photos. I will mention that both situations had changing light. The death valley scene had passing clouds changing the light and the Vincent Thomas scene was shot during blue hour so the colors were changing as was the light. Even in these difficult lighting situations the filter performed very well.
Fun Facts: Both sets of images were taken on a Canon 5D Mark IV & Canon 16-35mm F2.8ii. White balance was set to constant. No white balance adjustments were done to any photos. Very light sharpening, noise reduction, and some light exposure adjustments were made for constancy due to the changing light.

No Color Cast
Great Build with Knurled ring, aluminum frame and hard stops at 1 and 5 stops
No Vignetting during rotation and due tot he larger front threading, no vignetting even at 16mm on my 82mm lens ring
Overall, I was pretty surprised by the results of the test. I went into the test thinking that there was going to be an issue with vignetting and color as most variable ND filters have. I am very impressed by the build, color performance, and the presentation.
So, the question that some of you have probably is, “is this filter worth buying?”. My answer is yes, if you prefer circular filters over square systems, or if you are a videographer or portrait photographer. Variable ND filters are very handy for video and portrait because it allows you to adjust quickly in changing light when you are using a shallow depth of field. For those that prefer circular filters this is also a highly recommend as it performed very well. I would recommend this filter to anyone who fits those 3 categories.
Variable ND filters are something that everyone looks into when they first get into ND filters as they combine many filters into one. Traditionally that savings doesn’t mean great performance, but in this case, the NiSi True Color ND-VARIO Pro provides fantastic performance for a great value.

I am dedicated to providing the best instruction on all aspects of the art of landscape photography. Whether you are just beginning or are a seasoned pro, I am ready to help you move forward with your photography as all levels are welcome to participate. Together we will create an unforgettable photographic experience this fall.
Itinerary
Tentative Schedule:  Since this is a field workshop, we will remain flexible to weather and light conditions.  The final itinerary with exact times will be made available prior to our visit and discussed as we go along to make sure we are rested and ready to perform when the conditions are right. Middle of the day will be used for resting so that we are fresh for golden hours and night shooting. Lodging, airfare, transportation, park fees and meals are the responsibility of the attendee.

Transportation

Airports
• The nearest airport is in Las Vegas. McCarran International Airport (LAS) is about two hours away from Furnace Creek. • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is about five hours away from Furnace Creek.
Rental Cars
Many options are available for renting a vehicle of any kind from either airport listed above. Any car will be sufficient for our outings, but a vehicle with higher clearance could make driving easier on some roads in the park.
Accomodation
Hotels:
The most convenient and recommended location to stay is with the Oasis at Death Valley in the Furnace Creek area for both the Ranch and the Inn, but rooms at the Ranch are priced lower. There are also room available in StovePipe Wells, which is about a 20-30 minute drive to the north of Furnace Creek.
Camping:
Furnace Creek Campground is conveniently located and it takes reservations in advance online and by phone. There are two other campgrounds in Furnace Creek that are first come, first serve. There are options for backcountry camping nearby if your vehicle has at least 9 inches of clearance, 4x4 not necessary. There is also camping available at the StovePipe Wells Campground. RV Camping is available at both Furnace Creek and StovePipe Wells. Showers are usually available for $10 per person at the Furnace Creek Resort or Stovepipe Wells.
Things to Bring
It’s always good to know what equipment you need. If you have any questions about the necessities I’m here to help, but here is a list of essentials and recommendations for the trip:

Many layers - It can be quite cold in the morning hours, but usually mildy warm in the middle of the day. I’ll have more on the weather 1 week prior to our meeting date

Hiking Shoes\Boots are recommended
FOOD:
Food, Water, and all other essentials. No Food or water will be provided before, during or after workshop; unless otherwise stated in the itinerary.
Plan ahead and have plenty of water available as it is very dry and can warm quickly on clear days.
Physical Requirements
Hiking will be required, but the hikes will be around 1-2 miles at most. The Sand Dunes and Badlands provide the most strenuous of the hikes, but are moderate at best. Typically shooting is done within a mile of the car and most hiking should be flat in elevation. We’ll be sure to move at a fair pace and no student will be left behind, but please consider that there will be walking involved and participants should be prepared physically.

CANCELLATIONS:  Cancellations require me to re-open enrollment and/or to engage in additional promotional efforts to fill the workshop on a short notice, therefore, my policy is that there will be no refunds of the deposit. The balance (minus the non-refundable deposit) is refundable up to the 60-day deadline. Post Processing is not included with this workshop. You can purchase an additional 3 hours of post processing instruction with this workshop that will be completed following the workshop. Editing is done via group video session in the following weeks from the workshop. It is recorded and available for download shortly after the session is complete. First Impressions with the new V7 Filter System by NiSi

In the last few weeks there has been quite a bit of buzz in the filter world over the new V7 Filter system from NiSi. I was lucky to get my hands on one just before the big release on October 1st and I’ve been using it over the past few weeks. To be honest, I really didn’t think that there was much to improve on and wasn’t expecting a new system this soon. However, after seeing the improvements that were made, I feel that the V7 has only made the best filter holder easier to use then ever.
Ladies and Gentleman, Full Disclosure
Before we begin I must first disclose that I’m now an Official NiSi Optics USA Ambassador and Reseller. So, yes, my opinions could come with some bias, but I only stand behind product I believe in. I wasn’t forced to NiSi products, I simply went with a superior product that turned into a great relationship with NiSi. If you are interested in hearing why I switched to NiSi please check out my blog where I’ve reviewed and compared NiSi vs other products I’ve used. So without further ado, let’s talk about the NiSi V7 System.
Ok, so what’s new?
As I eluded to in my introduction, I was caught by surprise by the release of the new V7 System. I was really curious as to what could have possibly been improved on since I really felt like the V6 system was perfect. Upon receiving the system I found out what NiSi improved on.
FIRST
First, the filter holder attachment and locking mechanism was combined into one. The old V6 system had two mechanisms, one to attached and secure the holder, and one to lock the filter holder from rotation around the main filter ring. While this never really bothered me, I’ve found the combination of the two into in one was convenient and sped up the attachment/locking of the filter holder. I would imagine the combination reduces the change of a mistaking the two mechanisms and a possible accident. I will mention that I really never had any issues with the V6 and mistaking the locking and attaching mechanisms in almost 2 years of use.
SECOND
The second change you’ll find in the new V7 System is how the Circular Polarizer attaches to the main filter ring. In the past, with the V6, you had to thread in the CPL to the filter ring. The CPL is very thin for these systems and can be uncomfortable to attach when you first get the system. I definitely have had a moment or two where I made sure that I didn’t drop the CPL while attaching to the V6 system. I’m pretty sure this was the feedback from several of the ambassadors as they definitely improved the attachment process in the V7. Now, the CPL attaches using a quick turn. You simply line up 3 lines that are on both the CPL and the main ring, then you simply drop the CPL into place and turn to the right to lock. I love this because not only does it speed up the application and removal process, but it also lowers the chance of a dropping accident happening. The CPL application process is greatly improved with the V7 System, but there is more about the CPL as well.
THIRD
The third change you’ll see with the V7 System is the new True Color CPL. In addition to the application process, they also changed the actual CPL. Previously you had the choice between a PRO CPL or Enhanced Landscape CPL. I had always used the landscape CPL, which had a slight blue tint to it which helped with richening the colors of skies and green plants very well. However, I found that the blues and green were maybe just a bit rich and there was a slight blue cast in terms of white balance. So, I was pleasantly surprised to learn about the True Color CPL, which is very color neutral. I had a chance to test the new CPL while I was in Colorado shooting fall colors and really liked the the color response that I was getting. I really felt like the colors were remaining constant, but the areas of reflected light were being controlled as I would want them. I’m a huge fan of this new CPL because as a landscape photographer colors are super important.
Vignetting
Since vignetting is something that you often get questions about let’s touch on this really quick. As with the V6, the V7 continues to have no vignetting at 16mm. I can fully rotate the filter holder 360° and never experience vignetting. This is a huge win when using a graduated filter as you can rotate the darkening effect of the grad towards the light making the graduation much smoother and realistic. It is also useful because you can rotate the filter holder to help block light when you are shooting in mid-day shooting conditions. Ensuring that you don’t have light leak or any lens flare is important to coming away with a clean photograph. Rotating the filter holder helps fight both of these.
Filter Rings - Comes with 4!
Once again, the V7 comes with most all the filter rings you are going to need. It comes with the main ring, 82mm, and also includes adapter rings for 77mm, 72mm and 67mm lenses. These rings sizes should cover just about all standard filter ring sizes. Any odd filter rings can be purchased cheaply so your system fits on just about any lens you buy, minus any bulbus wide angles.
Summary of Wins for the V7 System
New filter holder attachment that includes both attachment and locking mechanism in 1
Faster and easier attachment of the CPL to the main filter ring, no threading
True Color CPL for more accurate colors
Still 100% no vignetting at 16mm
My overall first impressions of the new V7 system is that NiSi has improved on V6. The new system reflects the feedback that was provided by the ambassador team. The improvements were made to make the system faster, easier and safer to use then ever. The fact that NiSi even made these improvements continues to prove to me how they are committed to providing the best product possible.
Some of you may be current V6 users and might be asking yourself, “Should I change to the V7?” I think the V6 system is still a fantastic system and wouldn’t recommend upgrading until you’ve worn through your current holder. The differences between the two aren’t vast and you’ll be fine until the time is right. For those that are new to the NiSi filter systems, then yes, absolutely, buy the new V7 system. It is by far the best filter system out there.

The NiSi V7 100mm Filter Holder Kit with True Color NC CPL and Lens Cap is the most advanced 100mm filter holder we have ever created, with a refined design based on feedback from photographers. The V7 allows for the easy use of up to three 100mm wide, 2mm thick filters along with an included brand new NiSi True Color Circular Polarizer Filter, and has no vignetting at 16mm with wide-angle lenses on full-frame.
It is made from aviation-grade aluminum with single element processing by CNC machine, and the matte black frosted finish on the surface minimizes reflections. The V7 kit comes complete with the 100mm filter holder, an ultra-slim True Color CPL, four adapter rings for the most popular wide-angle lenses (67mm, 72mm, 77mm, and 82mm), a lens cap, and a storage pouch. The V7 features a unique rotation wheel design, so the CPL filter can be rotated independently with filters still in place via a cog on the back of the filter holder.
This version of the V7 features the brand new True Color CPL that prevents the yellow cast introduced from most CPLs. The True Color CPL features our proprietary NiSi Pro Nano Coating helping to reduce unwanted reflections and provides a waterproof and oil-resistant layer to assist in the cleaning of unwanted fingerprints, dust, and water stains.
Our new Point to Point CPL Design allows for easier guided installation of the CPL into the main 82mm adapter. By lining the white markers on the CPL up with the white mark on the main adapter and twisting, you can easily secure the CPL in place, and remove it with little effort.
Our unique clip system is designed to grip only along the edges of the filter avoiding contact with the surface of the filter. Filters are easy to insert, and contact with a filter’s main surfaces are avoided, particularly when using graduated filters, whose effect can be adjusted to better suit changing lighting conditions or creative demands by sliding them up or down within a filter slot.
Use of the NiSi V7 100mm Filter Holder can be easily accomplished by first screwing the included 82mm adapter ring onto a lens with 82mm front filter threads. Step-up rings are included to allow the adapter ring to be used with lenses that have 67mm, 72mm, or 77mm front filter threads, with additional step-up rings available separately for lenses with 49mm, 52mm, 55mm, 58mm, or 62mm front filter threads. After being fitted onto the adapter ring, the filter holder’s pull-and-release locking pin helps to provide a reliable connection that allows the holder to be rotated 360°. To further secure the position of the filter holder, it features a lock that can be activated by rotating a small wheel around the release pin which prevents any rotation of the filter holder.
Adapter rings for lenses with 86mm or 95mm front filter threads are also separately available. The combination of either of those adapter rings with the filter holder cannot accommodate a NiSi 86mm circular polarizer filter; however, a polarization effect can instead be obtained by placing a separately available, 100mm wide, 2mm thick polarizer filter between one pair of the filter holder’s slots.
The V7 kit includes a push-on lens cap that will protect the CPL while still connected to a lens and a padded holder pouch for safe storage and transport.

About The Workshop
During this workshop, I will guide you to some of the most interesting areas of the park, some well known and some hidden gems. Rippled sand dunes, multi-colored badlands and salt flats of surprising patterns are just a few of the incredible opportunities for translating emotion and vision through our photographic medium. I am dedicated to providing the best instruction on all aspects of the art of landscape photography. Whether you are just beginning or are a seasoned pro, I am ready to help you move forward with your photography as all levels are welcome to participate. Together we will create an unforgettable photographic experience this fall.
Itinerary
Tentative Schedule:  Since this is a field workshop, we will remain flexible to weather and light conditions.  The final itinerary with exact times will be made available on Day 1. Lodging, airfare, transportation, park fees and meals are the responsibility of the attendee.
DAY 1: Friday, November 5th

Transportation
No Transportation will be provided to, from or during the workshop. All attendees are responsible for arranging their own transportation. Any car will be sufficient for our outings, but a vehicle with higher clearance may allow you more ease on some roads throughout the park outside of our workshop.
Airports
• The nearest airport is in Las Vegas. McCarran International Airport (LAS) is about two hours away from Furnace Creek. • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is about five hours away from Furnace Creek.
Rental Cars
Many options are available for renting a vehicle of any kind from either airport listed above. Any car will be sufficient for our outings, but a vehicle with higher clearance could make driving easier on some roads in the park.
Accomodation
Hotels:
The most convenient and recommended location to stay is with the Oasis at Death Valley in the Furnace Creek area for both the Ranch and the Inn. The Oasis is the most expensive and the Ranch is a bit less. Many rooms are available at this time, but they do fill fast so don’t wait to purchase accommodation. There are also room available in StovePipe Wells, which is about a 20-30 minute drive to the north of Furnace Creek. I’d only recommend staying here if the Oasis is full.
Camping:
Camping can be done at this time of the year but can be fairly cold in the early hours of the morning. Furnace Creek Campground is conveniently located and it takes reservations in advance online and by phone. POST PROCESSING
Post Processing is not included with this workshop. You can purchase an additional 3 hours of post processing instruction with this workshop that will be completed following the workshop. Editing is done via group video session in the following weeks from the workshop. It is recorded and available for download shortly after the session is complete. Join me July 9-11, 2021 in Death Valley for a multi-day immersive experience in one of the most unique landscapes in the world. Spend 4 Golden Hours and 2 nights exploring the geologic wonders of the Alabama Hills. This workshop will be geared towards night shooting with some golden hour shoots as conditions permit.

About The Workshop
During this workshop I will guide you to key areas of the Alabama Hills while helping you to translate emotion and vision through our photographic medium. I am dedicated to providing the best instruction on all aspects of the art of landscape photography and night photography. Whether you are just beginning or are a seasoned pro, I am ready to help you move forward with your photography as all levels are welcome to participate. I will be teaching basic to advance night sky capture techniques and helping your discover the use of light during the golden hours. Together we will create an unforgettable photographic experience this spring by chasing light and capturing the summer night sky.
Itinerary
Tentative Schedule:  Since this is a field workshop, we will remain flexible to weather and light conditions.  The final itinerary with exact times will be made available prior to our visit and discussed as we go along to make sure we are rested and ready to perform when the conditions are right. Middle of the day will be used for resting so that we are fresh for golden hours and night shooting. Lodging, airfare, transportation, park fees and meals are the responsibility of the attendee.

Transportation
No Transportation will be provided to, from or during the workshop. All attendees are responsible for arranging their own transportation. Any car will be sufficient for our outings, but a vehicle with higher clearance may allow you more ease on some roads throughout the park.
Airports
• Nearest Major Airports are Las Vegas or Los Angeles. Flights can be taken to Mammoth Lakes as well.
Rental Cars
Many options are available for renting a vehicle of any kind from either airport listed above. Any car will be sufficient for our outings, but a vehicle with higher clearance could make driving easier on some roads in the park.
Accomodation
Hotels:
Any and all hotels in the city of Lone Pine, CA are recommended for ease of access to the Alabama Hills. Please reach out with any questions about accommodations and staying in Lone Pine.
Camping:
Alabama Hills is located in BLM land and has dispersed camping available on a first come, first serve basis. Weekends can be very crowded for camping during the summer months. I would recommend arriving early to get a campground. Please check with the Alabama Hills website and BLM website for more information about camping.
Things to Bring
It’s always good to know what equipment you need. If you have any questions about the necessities I’m here to help, but here is a list of essentials and recommendations for the trip:
Equipment:
DSLR / Mirrorless camera and lenses
DSLR or Mirrorless camera is an essential tool to get the most out of the workshop and your photos
Wide Angle Lens - 12-24mm (Faster lenses are better for night photography, but not essential)
Mid to Long Range Zoom - 24-70, 70-200, 100-400 are great ranges to capture intimate scenes
Tripod (Sturdy as the Fall months can have very strong winds)
All filters you might have, a Circular Polarizer is a great tool
Remote / cable camera shutter
Needed for tack sharp images and long exposures
Several memory cards
You never want to run out of space for pictures. Bring several or empty at the end of the day
Spare camera batteries
Another thing you never want to run out of in the field. Bring several fully charged with you and charge over night
Head torch (for any night or low light walking and shooting)
Raincover for camera and camera bag cold come in handy in some rare cases of rain or high wind!
Small Camping Chair or Stool for comfort
Clothing Items:
Summer Months are usually quite warm. I would recommend bringing some light layers such as wind jacket or wind pants for the evening and morning. Sunsets will be quite warm, shorts and short sleeves are appropriate.
Sunglasses, Large Brim hat, and Sunscreen are recommended for the daytime
Hiking Shoes\Boots are recommended
FOOD:
Food, Water, and all other essentials. No Food or water will be provided before, during or after workshop; unless otherwise stated in the itinerary.
Plan ahead and have plenty of water available as it is very dry and can warm quickly on clear days.
Physical Requirements
Hiking will be required, but the hikes will be around .5-1 miles at most. Typically shooting is done within a mile of the car and most hiking should be flat in elevation. We’ll be sure to move at a fair pace and no student will be left behind, but please consider that there will be walking involved and participants should be prepared physically.

COST:  The cost of the workshop is $950 and includes everything listed in the “What’s Included” Section 
PAYMENT:  A non-refundable deposit of $250 is required to reserve a space on this workshop. The final balance of $950 is due and payable 30 days before the workshop begins. Full payment is due at that time or thereafter, and there will be no refunds on the full amount owed if you cancel after final payment. However, if another client happens to fill your space, you will receive a full refund, minus your non-refundable deposit. The class size for this event has been limited to only 5 students to further minimize the risks associated with COVID-19. Please do not attend this class if you are experiencing any symptoms related to COVID-19 including fever of 100.4 or higher, cough, shortness of breath, loss of sense of taste/smell, fatigue, diarrhea, muscle aches and headache.
Participants will be required to sign a COVID-19 addendum and assumption of risk form
CANCELLATIONS:  Cancellations require me to re-open enrollment and/or to engage in additional promotional efforts to fill the workshop on a short notice, therefore, my policy is that there will be no refunds of the deposit. The balance (minus the non-refundable deposit) is refundable up to the 60-day deadline. Thereafter, the balance is also non-refundable, with one exception: if we find participants to fill all canceled spaces and the workshop is ultimately full when it begins, then you will receive a refund of the balance within two weeks of the workshop’s conclusion. The deposit remains non-refundable. All refunds are subject to a 6% processing fee. I highly recommend that you obtain travel/cancellation insurance for all workshops to protect yourself against unusual circumstances.

During this workshop, I will guide you through Joshua Tree National Park while helping you to translate emotion and vision through our photographic medium. I am dedicated to providing the best instruction on all aspects of the art of landscape photography and night photography. Whether you are just beginning or are a seasoned pro, I am ready to help you move forward with your photography as all levels are welcome to participate. Together we will create an unforgettable photographic experience this spring by chasing light and capturing the early spring night sky.

Hotels:
There is no lodging available within Joshua Tree National Park. However, there are many places to stay in nearby communities. Please contact area chambers of commerce for information.
I would recommend staying in 29 Palms or just outside of the park towards the town of Joshua Tree. You will find lots of accommodations in both of those areas including hotels and AirBnB.
Camping:
Camping is very popular in Joshua Tree and campgrounds sell out quickly. Learn more about the nine campgrounds in Joshua Tree. There are also a number of options for camping outside of the park. Restaurants, Grocery Stores, & Picnic Areas:
There are no restaurants or grocery stores inside Joshua Tree National Park, but nearby communities provide these services. Check with area chambers of commerce for more information.
Joshua Tree has eight picnic areas: Cottonwood, Indian Cove, Live Oak, Split Rock, Cap Rock, Hidden Valley, Quail Springs, and Black Rock. Their locations are shown on the map here at the bottom of the page.
Remember: help us keep wildlife wild. Never feed wild animals. Store food in hard-sided containers or in your vehicle. Carefully clean up all trash and leftovers, even small crumbs.

A blanket of fog develops overnight during the clearing of a storm in Yosemite National Park.

Join me March 12-14, 2021 in Joshua Tree National Park for a multi-day immersive experience amongst the unique Joshua Trees, rock formations and dark skies. Spend 4 Golden Hours and 2 nights exploring the vast arid landscapes that the park has to offer. This national park is one of the country’s most interesting so I truly hope you’ll join me for an unforgettable photographic experience.

About The Workshop
During this workshop, I will guide you through the ethereal Joshua Trees and amazing rock formations while helping you to translate emotion and vision through our photographic medium. I am dedicated to providing the best instruction on all aspects of the art of landscape photography and night photography. Whether you are just beginning or are a seasoned pro, I am ready to help you move forward with your photography as all levels are welcome to participate. Together we will create an unforgettable photographic experience this spring by chasing light and capturing the early spring night sky.
Itinerary
Tentative Schedule:  Since this is a field workshop, we will remain flexible to weather and light conditions to ensure we are able to shoot during the most ideal conditions. The final itinerary with exact times will be made available on Day 1. Lodging, airfare, transportation, park fees and all meals are the responsibility of the attendee.
DAY 1: Friday, March 12th 3:00 PM Meet at Park Entrance (Meet and Greet) 3:30 PM Depart for Sunset Shoot 6:30 PM Depart back to Dinner and Rest For Morning Session
DAY 2: Saturday, March 13th

Transportation
No Transportation will be provided to, from or during the workshop. All attendees are responsible for arranging their own transportation. Any car will be sufficient for our outings, but a vehicle with higher clearance may allow you more ease on some roads throughout the park.
Airports
The nearest airport is in Palm Springs, California
Los Angeles is about 140 Miles to the West
San Diego is about 170 Miles to the South
Rental Cars
Many options are available for renting a vehicle of any kind from either airport listed above. Any car will be sufficient for our outings, but a vehicle with higher clearance could make driving easier on some roads in the park.
Accomodation
Hotels:
There is no lodging available within Joshua Tree National Park. However, there are many places to stay in nearby communities. Please contact area chambers of commerce for information.
I would recommend staying in 29 Palms or just outside of the park towards the town of Joshua Tree. You will find lots of accommodations in both of those areas including hotels and AirBnB.
Camping:
Camping is very popular in Joshua Tree and campgrounds sell out quickly. Learn more about the nine campgrounds in Joshua Tree. There are also a number of options for camping outside of the park. Restaurants, Grocery Stores, & Picnic Areas:
There are no restaurants or grocery stores inside Joshua Tree National Park, but nearby communities provide these services. Check with area chambers of commerce for more information.
Joshua Tree has eight picnic areas: Cottonwood, Indian Cove, Live Oak, Split Rock, Cap Rock, Hidden Valley, Quail Springs, and Black Rock. Their locations are shown on the map here at the bottom of the page.
Remember: help us keep wildlife wild. Never feed wild animals. Store food in hard-sided containers or in your vehicle. Carefully clean up all trash and leftovers, even small crumbs.
Things to Bring
It’s always good to know what equipment you need. If you have any questions about the necessities I’m here to help, but here is a list of essentials and recommendations for the trip:
Equipment:
DSLR / Mirrorless camera and lenses
DSLR or Mirrorless camera is an essential tool to get the most out of the workshop and your photos
Wide Angle Lens - 12-24mm (Faster lenses are better for night photography, but not essential)
Mid to Long Range Zoom - 24-70, 70-200, 100-400 are great ranges to capture intimate scenes
Tripod (Sturdy as the Fall months can have very strong winds)
All filters you might have, a Circular Polarizer is a great tool
Remote / cable camera shutter
Needed for tack sharp images and long exposures
Several memory cards
You never want to run out of space for pictures. Bring several or empty at the end of the day
Spare camera batteries
Another thing you never want to run out of in the field. Bring several fully charged with you and charge over night
Head torch (for any night or low light walking and shooting)
Raincover for camera and camera bag cold come in handy in some rare cases of rain or high wind!
Small Camping Chair or Stool for comfort
Clothing Items:
Many layers - It can be quite cold in the morning hours, but usually mild to warm in the middle of the day. I’ll have more on the weather in the weeks prior to our workshop date
Gloves, Warm Hat, warm socks
Sunglasses, Large Brim hat, and Sunscreen are recommended for the daytime
Hiking Shoes\Boots are recommended
FOOD:
Food, Water, and all other essentials. No Food or water will be provided before, during or after workshop; unless otherwise stated in the itinerary.
Plan ahead and have plenty of water available as it is very dry and can warm quickly on clear days.
Physical Requirements
Some hiking will be required, but the hikes will be around 1-2 miles at most. Most of the hiking is very flat and moderate in difficulty at best. Typically shooting is done within a mile of the car and most hiking should be generally light in elevation change. We’ll be sure to move at a fair pace and no student will be left behind.
Please make me aware of any concerns you might have about your physical abilities.

COST:  The cost of the workshop is $950 and includes everything listed in the “What’s Included” Section 
PAYMENT:  A non-refundable deposit of $250 is required to reserve a space on this workshop. The final balance of $950 is due and payable 60 days before the workshop begins. Full payment is due at that time or thereafter, and there will be no refunds on the full amount owed if you cancel after final payment. However, if another client happens to fill your space, you will receive a full refund, minus your non-refundable deposit. COVID-19 ADVISORY:
In accordance with state and local public health organizations, Chris Ewen Crosby Photography & Samy's Photo School are following all COVID-19 related protocols. All participants will be asked to maintain social distancing protocols of 6 feet from anyone not in their household. Face coverings are mandatory for all. The class size for this event has been limited to only 5 students to further minimize the risks associated with COVID-19. Please do not attend this class if you are experiencing any symptoms related to COVID-19 including fever of 100.4 or higher, cough, shortness of breath, loss of sense of taste/smell, fatigue, diarrhea, muscle aches and headache.
CANCELLATIONS:  Cancellations require me to re-open enrollment and/or to engage in additional promotional efforts to fill the workshop on a short notice, therefore, my policy is that there will be no refunds of the deposit. The balance (minus the non-refundable deposit) is refundable up to the 60-day deadline. Thereafter, the balance is also non-refundable, with one exception: if we find participants to fill all canceled spaces and the workshop is ultimately full when it begins, then you will receive a refund of the balance within two weeks of the workshop’s conclusion. The deposit remains non-refundable. All refunds are subject to a 6% processing fee. I highly recommend that you obtain travel/cancellation insurance for all workshops to protect yourself against unusual circumstances.
PARK FEES: All attendees of the workshop are required to pay the National Park Entrance fees upon entry to the park and are not included in Workshop Fee. Further instruction will be provided to students prior to their visit.
Joshua Tree Entrance Fee - per vehicle - $30.00
This permit allows all persons traveling with the permit holder in one single private, non-commercial vehicle (car/truck/van) to leave and re-enter the park as many times as they wish during the 7-day period from the date of purchase.
Joshua Tree Entrance Fee - per motorcycle - $25.00
This permit allows persons traveling on one motorcycle to leave and re-enter the park as many times as they wish during the 7-day period from the date of purchase.
Joshua Tree Entrance Fee - per individual - $15.00
This permit allows a single individual traveling on foot or individuals traveling on one bicycle to leave and re-enter the park as many times as they wish during the 7-day period from the date of purchase.
Joshua Tree Annual Pass - $55.00
Annual pass providing free entrance to Joshua Tree for 12 months from the date of purchase

POST PROCESSING
Post Processing is not included with this workshop. You can purchase an additional 3 hours of post processing instruction with this workshop that will be completed following the workshop. Editing is done via group video session in the following weeks from the workshop. It is recorded and available for download shortly after the session is complete. Instruction is given in both Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. Topics of post processing will vary upon your skill level. Common topics below:

Hotels:
The most convenient and recommended location to stay is with the Oasis at Death Valley in the Furnace Creek area for both the Ranch and the Inn, but rooms at the Ranch are priced lower. There are also room available in StovePipe Wells, which is about a 20-30 minute drive to the north of Furnace Creek.
Camping:
Camping can be done at this time of the year but can be fairly cold in the early hours of the morning. Furnace Creek Campground is conveniently located and it takes reservations in advance online and by phone. There are options for backcountry camping nearby if your vehicle has at least 9 inches of clearance, 4x4 not necessary. There is also camping available at the StovePipe Wells Campground. RV Camping is available at both Furnace Creek and StovePipe Wells. Showers are usually available for $10 per person at the Furnace Creek Resort.
