This is what’s missing in a lot of BL. Not just the beautiful moments of asking for consent and recognizing that someone under the influence cannot give consent, but the moments that come after.
More BL shows need to portray the internal struggle of coming to terms with and acknowledging one’s sexuality, and the confusion that is brings. The way this show portrays that, and gives Gene a compassionate and understanding partner in Nubsib is so wonderful to see. Nubsib doesn’t force anything out of him. He sees that Gene can’t even speak the words aloud, and he lets him know that it is okay; he doesn’t have to come to terms with anything in this moment. He doesn’t have to admit his confusion or explain himself in anyway to Nubsib. Nubsib lets him know in so very few words that Gene not only doesn’t have to do anything he isn’t ready for, but he also doesn’t have to say anything he isn’t ready to. Nubsib has given Gene a safe and comforting environment to take his time and do what he’s most comfortable with. Up until this point, Nubsib has been the one to approach Gene, but now that Gene feels safe and comfortable, he is the one to approach Gene and asked to be held while they fall asleep. It’s such a beautiful and powerful scene.
I just want to wait until we’re more ready. I’m confused. About what? About … It’s okay.
