"I volunteered in the local teaching hospital three days a week in the Delivery Suite and NICU. In the Delivery Ward I comforted mothers in labor and helped care for the new born babies in the ward. In the NICU I took vitals, fed, dressed, and burped the babies. The other two days of the week I worked in two local leprosy camps dressing wounds and performing basic health screens. It was an great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the medical field while also learning about healthcare in the developing country."

"I gained hands on experience rehabilitating injured and orphaned wildlife in Washington, so that they could be released back into the wild. I worked closely with a rehabber and assisted in the exam room, as well as practiced skills such as diet preparation, administering medications, nutritional tubings, sub-cutaneous injections and vaccines, releases, and enclosure maintenance. I also got to learn a lot about human-animal interactions, and took classes including wildlife scenarios, preventative care, wildlife ethics, fracture stabilization, radiology, thermoregulation, nutrition, and avian force feeding. Prior to this internship I planned on pursuing a career in wildlife rehabilitation, but I enjoyed the medical side of my internship so much that I now want to explore it deeper, and go to vet school for wildlife and conservation medicine."

"I worked closely with faculty and staff in the Teleneurology Program to develop C3FIT, a pragmatic randomized stroke trial funded by PCORI, and a prehospital feasibility study to link ambulance personnel to experts in stroke care using technology funded by the USDA Telemedicine Program. My primary roles included assisting with grant preparation, shadowing clinicians, and developing healthcare research projects and programmatic initiatives. As a research intern, I received invaluable exposure to various medical specialties and, as a result, now plan to pursue a career as a physician’s assistant."

I conducted a literature review for our study of racial disparity in prostate cancer. I also recruited clinical patients at Fox Chase and Temple University Hospital to participate in a qualitative analysis of how socioeconomic factors effect health outcome in head and neck cancer. Lastly, I interviewed and took DNA samples from community members using tobacco products and no history of cancer to investigate metabolites excreted by the body as an indicator of lung cancer development."
