Underrated form of intimacy:
The quiet discussion and good-luck affirmations between you and the person helping you don your armor. The comfort of knowing that the straps and buckles are perfectly secure, because the person who did them up loves you more than words can say.

Every time AO3 makes an update, thereā€™s a chorus of ā€˜and can we please please please be able to leave kudos on each chapter pleeeeease?!?!ā€™
In theory, this is a nice idea. Weā€™ve all smashed the kudos button on our favourite fics, bemoaning the fact we canā€™t give them all the love.
But yaā€™ll, kudos per chapter would absolutely fucking suck.
For readers, it would suck because it would compound the existing problem of making it hard to find fics that are good and not just long - not that a fic canā€™t be both! But there are plenty of Pulitzer-worthy one-shots out there that are buried way way down the list when ranked by number of kudos, because theyā€™re beneath a bunch of 50/? fics where the author lost sight of where the hell the story was going 30 chapters ago, but their fic has had 50x the chances to be viewed so has more kudos. It would encourage authors to release their fics in lots of little chapters instead of a few longer ones/one-shots as they might otherwise have done (and as might otherwise suit the story).
And for authors it would especially suck, as it would compound the existing problem of people not commenting. Kudos are very much appreciated, but comments make an authorā€™s day; but so few people bother, and frankly, itā€™s disheartening. Let people just click a button to show their appreciation for each new chapter? The hits:kudos:comments ratio would get even worse than it already is.
You can already ā€˜give kudosā€™ for each chapter of a fic on AO3 - by commenting. Hell you can literally write ā€˜kudos!ā€™ It will make the author smile, I promise.

Small additions to this:
"In 1985, GenCon had grown too big to be hosted on a campus and it moved to Milwaukee and it's long-time home at the MECCA Convention Center. Over 5,000 people attended. Within a few years, it easily became Milwaukee's largest annual convention. In 1985, however, only a portion of "Mecca" was needed for the con. It used two side halls and shared the main hall with a floral convention." (source)
A FLORAL CONVENTION
HOW ROMANTIC (I have not yet been able to find any more information about the floral convention and would feel free to make stuff up about it)
(I'd like to have a bit where Steve, desperately needing a break, finds his way to the floral side of the main hall and reflects that compared with the atmosphere generated by hordes of excited nerds cheek by jowl, in here it smells like heaven)
I also got in touch with one of the people who set up the best50yearsingaming.com site and asked if there were full scans of the programmes available so I could see when and where different events were held (unfortunately, the database information about the various events gives only the blurbs about their content, not the place and time, so although it doesn't matter if I write about a character attending one game demo and then a Q&A panel which in fact were on at the same time on opposite sides of the venue, I would find it helpful just to know what the real schedule was so I could stick to that where it suited me and depart from it where it suited me).
He said unfortunately not, as they are copyright to Gen Con which has not given permission to share them, but was willing to answer a few questions for me. I learned that the exhibit hall was open from 10 to 8 each day except Sunday when it closed at 4. Gaming on Thursday went from 11 to 10:45, Friday and Saturday it went from 7 to 10:45, Sunday from 7 to 6:45.
A few events I was curious about:
Role-Playing: Harmful Or Beneficial? Thursday 3 to 4:30, W3 upper level seminar area
Editors Are Ghouls and CannibalsĀ  Friday 3 to 4:30 in W4 on upper level seminar area
A Chat With GaryĀ  Saturday 11-1230 in Plankington Theater Auditorium
(In this story Eddie has aspirations to get his campaigns and game ideas published, and the Ghouls and Cannibals panel was about how to do just that.)
He also sent me a .pdf of the maps/MECCA layout pages of the 1985 programme which should be pretty darn helpful.
All of this feels like information someone would have had available for free on their GeoCities site in 1998, but so many of those personal hobby sites are gone now or hard to find with current search engines.
Oh also! 1985 appears to be the first year Gen Con had a costume contest. I've only found two pictures from it so far:
Tumblr media
(shared on the Gen Con Twitter with no information about the people pictured)
Tumblr media
Alice Felden, of Mountain View, Missouri, came as Death.
If anyone wants to write a story (I thought of the idea but don't have the energy) in which Steve and Eddie meet properly at Gen Con 1985, to which Dustin somehow convinced Steve to drive him and Eddie led an expedition of the Hellfire Club (so Steve is massively out of his element), there's an amazing source of information at https://www.best50yearsingaming.com. They have a database of all the past years' programmes, and you can drill down into it to select, for example, all the seminars held in a particular year - here's 1985's lineup.

want to be clear that if i ever talk about a headcanon and then later discuss a headcanon that is directly contradictory to the first one, thatā€™s because headcanons exist in a quantum state where they are all simultaneously true and not true up until the point where i discuss it in detail, in which case that is the one that is true in that instance. schroedingerā€™s headcanons
