Stop taking Nanami's words for why Gojo did what he did as the truth of Gojo's motivations and feelings.

Nanami doesn't understand Gojo and he never has. That's the point of his part in the chapter. To show that even if Gojo could go back to the time where he felt understood, there were still people that thought of him as something that he isn't and projected their own feelings toward him onto who he is.

Just look at Gojo's expression while Nanami is talking. When he says that Gojo doesn't use jujutsu to protect anything but rather for his own selfishness, Gojo looks like he wants to cry. And when Haibara adds that most people thought that way about him but wouldn't say so, he's clearly annoyed, while Geto --who understood him best and knows that Nanami just doesn't get it-- looks like he's about to laugh.

Nanami himself admits that he doesn't respect Gojo and tells Yuuji not to compare himself to him, while Gojo wants the opposite; for his students to strive toward and ultimately surpass him. Which is something that Namami just doesn't try, nor does he care, to do.

Nanami thinks of Gojo the same way that the majority of jujutsu society does: someone that's out of reach in terms of strength, so why bother trying to get to his level, and also someone that can solve they're problems when they become too hard to overcome on their own.

And it's not like Nanami grew much in terms of strength from when he left after Haibara's death because he left sorcerery behind entirely and only came back a bit before his own death.

I think it's very telling that Gojo can have a back and forth with Geto and be understood (because Geto understood him and how it was to be the strongest) only for Nanami to pick and choose what he gets out of their conversation for his own opinions, and have that be what people take away as what Gege wants us to think about Gojo rather than it being a reflection on how Nanami sees him.

It's almost as if Nanami is a stand-in for fans that will read the words on the page but not understand them, in the same way that Nanami hears Gojo but doesn't understand him.
