i've watched upto ep 6 of dark, ao i figured id make a lil collection of my thoughts so far!

really enjoying the themes: generational trauma, parental sins passing onto children. i think its significant that mads, mikkel and yasin were all so vulnerable and young, they were all the same age ~11, and they are stolen away... blameless lambs who are the first to be slaughtered? not quite sure where erik fits in here

the fact that ulrich, the teenaged delinquent, becomes a police officer and never leaves winden, when as a teen he says that he hopes winden is destroyed. hell... he never leaves winden because of his grief for mads and in time, the town warps him and has stolen away both his childhood & his future

hannah. i like her role in the narrative... the person who is most stuck in the past, mother who is still fixated on the boy she fell for at fourteen.

i think it's significant that katharina and ulrich were kind of... bullies, when they were teenagers? and now in the present they are respectively the principal and a police officer. hm. bullies who grow up into positions of power, and now that they are adults, the full consequences of their past actions are hitting them

the symbols! i love it when shows have consistent symbolism... so far i have picked out the tree (on the box michael's letter to ines is in; it reappears a couple times, i remember it's present in the background in martha's play and on michael's grave as well; it brings to mind yggdrasil... different worlds (timelines?) all with the same root), the gordian knot (ending and beginning... thus the world was created) which is also tied to the symbolism of the red thread (ariadne's thread; jonas is clearly the theseus in this metaphor but then who is the monster in the labyrinth?)

predicted the mikkel/michael connection by ep3 but it was sooo satisfying to see it be carried out...! so far i am most excited to learn more about the strange torture room... the stuffed toy, colourful wallpaper: for intentional infantilisation of the victims the mysterious person in white protective gear chooses? it's so very fucked up... i did not expect this show to have overtones of horror, but i welcome it

i actively choose to ignore the fact that kasuka saw shutting down his emotions from a very young age as something necessary due to shizuo’s outbursts, so that way i can live in my silly little world in which they have the most healthy sibling relationship possible and nothing bad ever happened. because when you actually start thinking about it, yeah, it’s quite fucked up.
