Magical Boys
Magical Girl Thought Dump 3.
Tumblr media
I noticed the lack of magical boy anime in the magical girl genre. But I’ve found at least seven that fit within the genre. In this thought dump, it is by far, my goal to discuss all of them. Since they’re such wild deer (rare these days. I’ve never seen a wild deer before, living in New York.) It might take me a long time to gather all the magical boy in existence, so I’ve gathered info up for about seven.
Why are magical boys uncommon?
I feel like they’re not common because no one is going to want to see a young boy transforming into a magical boy. Especially young girls who emulate girls transforming and being magic heroes. Also, as we’ve seen in most shonen, boys tend to sword fighters and brute combat users, rarely do they transform using magic to become their alter ego. The most I’ve seen in this genre that even is recognized as a magical boy barely even count in my book, because they become full girls instead. Anime like Kampfer and the more recent Ore, Twintail ni Narimasu specifically.
D-do they transform showing their “g-guy parts”.
Nope. The worst I’ve seen is butts in Ikuto’s catboy transformation, but… they never show anything else. Most are obscured to oblivion, even, so there’s no problems with that. I wouldn’t review ones like that, anyway.
Okay, here we go.
Tumblr media
Star Driver
One of the very few on this list that are pure magical boy without being half magical girl, half magical boy. However, it’s also a mecha, so it’s questionable if it even counts as a magical boy to begin with… but I count it.
Description: “To the south of Japan, there lies a lush green island called Southern Cross Isle. One night, a boy by the name of Takuto Tsunashi washes up on the shore of the island. Having swum from the mainland alone and without any possessions, he enrolls in the senior high level in the school on the island - Southern Cross High School. With his bright and positive personality, he starts to mix with various students in the school and builds relationships with many of them, including Wako Agemaki and Sugata Shindou. But this school hides a deep secret. There are sleeping giants hidden under the ground called "Cybodies”. There are about 20 of these giants, and they are just some of the various secrets kept by everyone on the island: The secret movements of the mysterious organization known as Glittering Crux. The songs of the shrine maidens. And even Takuto himself will soon come to embrace a great secret… This island in the southern territories surrounded by the blue sea and the blue skies is the stage where the “Eulogy of Youth” filled with love, dreams and friendships, will begin.“
How is it a magical boy?
It fits into half of the tropes of a magical girl anime to make it a magical girl to begin with. Our hero, Takuto, can transform into Ginga Bishounen. He must battle in order to use his powers, and obviously, he has to fight otherwordly creatures. The thing he uses when he transforms is called a cybody. That’s the mecha thing he uses when he becomes Ginja Bishounen. All the tropes fall into the genre nicely to make it work with magical boy. Themes of friendship and justice are amongst these two.
When did it air?
October 2007 - April 2008. It is 25 episodes, and later got a movie. Not sure when the movie came out, however, I’ll get back to people on that if they want to know.
Do I recommend it?
Yes, yes I do. It has plenty of colored hair characters, but if you don’t like mecha, then skip it.
Tumblr media
Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka?& Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka Of the Dead.
This magical boy is a rather interesting one as it’s a parody of the genre and literally breaks a lot of tropes that it uses in this anime. If you can’t tell by the picture, the main character is forced to cross dress when he becomes a "masou shojo” (“Magiclad Girl/Magikewl Girl” depending on whichever version you watch.) However, he retains his gender rather than becoming a girl.
Description: “Aikawa Ayumu is a normal high school boy. One day he is killed by a serial killer and revived as a zombie by a necromancer named Eucliwood Hellscythe. He starts to serve Eu as her guard but he happens to deprive the masou-shoujo Haruna of her magic power. Haruna orders Ayumu to fight against the anti-masou-shoujo system "Megalo” in her place.“
How is it a magical boy?
As listed above, the main character is forced to cross dress when he transforms, but he retains his gender when he does transform. He must fight these creatures called Megalo, they are from another world like in most magical girl anime. There are also other magical girls in the show. However, there is no themes of sense of justice, I guess friendship sort of is a theme, but it really isn’t. This show pretty much parodies everything, so it’s not to be taken seriously.
When did it air?
The first season aired in January 2011. It finished in March of 2011. While the second season aired starting in April of 2012 and ended its airing in June of 2012. There were also OVAs airing in between the seasons. The second season also had a couple of OVAs of its own.
Do I recommend it?
Highly. It is laugh out loud funny and worth watching all 22 episodes. The OVAs are not part of the main storyline, but I recommend all of them if you want to. If you don’t like fanservice, then this isn’t for you.
Warning, however. There is dirty humor in spots, and it is an ecchi anime. Don’t watch it near younger children.
Tumblr media
Kamichama Karin
You may be thinking, "that’s not a magical boy!” It technically is. Actually, it’s both a magical boy and a magical girl. And it’s not tuxedo mask/Kaito Sinbad kind of thing. Full on magical boys that we see transform. It’s the first one of its kind that I’ve seen actually work. Not only that, it started out as a joke, but gets pretty serious later.
Description: “Karin Hanazono is an orphan, living with her relatives. Her life has never been easy, her studies are not well, she is not the best in sports and technically she is miserable. Left with only a ring as a memento from her departed mother, she suddenly finds her life changed, as she was mourning her pet cat, Shii-chan. On that night she met a strange boy, Kazune Kujyou. After that event, she experiences several mysterious incidences that soon led her to find out that she is a little goddess. Finding others like her she soon sets out to understand herself better as her mysterious powers grow and she becomes beset by opponents.”
How is it a magical boy?
As I stated in the first paragraph here, it’s both and works as both a magical boy and magical girl. The characters in this series transform into gods using rings. All the males in this series transform into Gods. (In the manga, at least) There is also the main antagonist, whom is also a magical boy himself. He also transforms using a ring. The characters cannot transform without their rings, just like how a magical girl cannot transform without her power amulet/trinket/whatever. There’s only two magical girls in this series. The rest are magical boys, this is why it counts as both.
When did it air?
This one aired in April of 2007 and ended in September of 2007. It was 26 episodes. Fifteen and sixteen are kind of filler, but the rest is within the manga’s plot. Except some it diverges entirely and adds things that weren’t in the first season of the manga.
Do I recommend it?
Yes. I recommend it. If you want something that’s different than most magical girl pre-Madoka, then give it a go. It’s a nice and gets serious later on. More than meets the eye with this one.
Tumblr media
Shugo Chara
Another one that is both a magical boy and a magical girl anime. It was created by Peach-Pit, so I had a problem with how none of the kids looked like hey were in elementary school. But, whatever.
Description: “Amu Hinamori is a student at Seiyo Elementary, where she has a reputation for being "cool and spicy”; however, her real personality is that of an extremely shy and easily intimidated girl. One night Amu makes a wish that she would have the courage to be reborn as her “would-be” self. The next morning Amu finds three brightly colored eggs—red, blue, and green—in her bed. Each egg eventually hatches into a Guardian Character: Ran, Miki, and Su. Guardian Characters are angel-like beings that aid a person into becoming their “would-be” selves and fulfill the person’s dreams. The Guardian Characters accomplish this by giving encouragement and advice, but they can also temporarily change a person’s personality and abilities. With the Guardian Characters, Amu’s life becomes much more complex as she now struggles to deal with her new personalities and the Seiyo Elementary Guardians—a student council group where each member has their own Guardian Character—who recruits Amu to search for and seal the X eggs and X Characters, corrupted forms of people’s dreams.“
How is it a magical boy?
There are plenty of magical boys in this series. They all transform with their Shugo Chara to perform a character transformation. To name a few: Tadase Hotori, Ikuto Tsukiyomi, Nagihiko Fujusaki and Kukai Souma. There’s one more, but I don’t remember his name. He was introduced quite late in the manga and late in the anime. These boys fight against X Eggs and try to get them back to being regular Shugo Chara. Of course, there are also plenty of magical girl in this series, and it’s a shoujo, so it centers around the main character, Amu. But it fits nicely within the genre enough to count as both a magical boy and magical girl.
When did it air?
This one is going to get tricky as to there are three seasons. The first season aired in October of 2007 and ended In September of 2008. 51 episodes. The second season aired a month later, starting in October of 2008 and ended in September of 2009. Also 51 episodes. The third season aired in October of 2009 and ended March of 2010. 25 episodes. That’s about 127 episodes. IT’S LENGTHY.
Do I recommend it?
Seasons one and two only. The third season is pointless, and half of each episode is filler.
Tumblr media
Dogs Days and Dog Days’.
This one is the only magical boy that fits most of each tropes…but the main character doesn’t have a transformation. Hearing however, that it fits in with the tropes and themes of magical boy, I watched it.
Description: "Republic of Biscotti faces a predicament by the invasion of Galette Leo Knights. In order to save the country, Princess Milchore summons a "hero” from the outer world. Cinque, a junior high school boy living on the Earth, is chosen as the hero.“
How is it a magical boy?
This one works like this: it follows the chosen hero trope. He is whisked away into another world where everyone is a furry girl/boy with dog/cat/fox/rabbit ears, you name it. The main character is a human boy in this the hero of this world. We never see him transform, but in this world he has magic powers as a hero of that world. However, the magic comes from his weapon. All the other girls have powers as well, but no one in this show can transform. It has themes of friendship and romance and adventure. It’s also by the creator of Lyrical Nanoha, by the way.
When did it air?
Season one aired in April of 2011 and ended its run in June of 2011. The second season aired in July of 2012 and ended in September of 2012. The third season will be airing this winter in January of 2015. Both seasons one and two are 13 episodes each.
Do I recommend it?
Season one, most wholeheartedly. Season two? Absolutely not! Avoid it like the plague. You’ll be disappointed.
Tumblr media
D.n. Angel.
This one is a cookie cutting kaito magical boy anime that came out a year or so after Kaitou Saint Tail and a few years after Man of Many Faces. But it’s different enough to stand out on its own. It’s different than all three of the other kaitou anime and is a fun magical boy if you can get past the cruddy, one dimensional writing.
Description: ”Niwa Daisuke is your average teenager, until his fourteenth birthday. He tries to declare his love to the girl of his dreams, but fails. Suddenly, whenever he thinks about this girl he turns into the legendary phantom thief known as Dark Mousy. Daisuke’s mother, very much aware of this, makes him turn into Dark and steal valuable works of art for a purpose unknown to Daisuke. As the story unfolds, he learns why, and about his classmate who seems to have the same ability.“
How is it a magical boy?
This one falls into the kaitou genre. The main character, Daisuke completely changes his appearance and dons purple hair over his red hair and, actually, later, it's revealed the two are of completely different consciousnesses. When he is around the girl he likes, he becomes Dark, and at night, when he has to steal, Dark takes over. He cannot fly on his own, however, like most magical boy, and requires to use a creature called Wiz to fly, but he does have powers of his own to steal paintings and whatnot. There’s also Krad whom I won’t reveal who his alter ego is. It’ll spoil it.
When did it air?
April of 2003. The anime ended in September of 2003. It was 26 episodes.
Do I recommend it?
The anime? NO. It was terrible! A disappointment! The manga? Yes! The manga is good, despite the really bad writing. It’s worth the time.
Last one.
Tumblr media
Mamotte! Lolipop.
This one is the one I feel like doesn’t exactly work with the genre, but I already wrote a Magical Girl Confession about it, and I really want to vouch that it is one. For many reasons why.
Description: "Nina, thinking it was a lolly, swallows an object called "Crystal Pearl”. But the candy turns out to be a test for the magicians. To retrieve the crystal, a special medicine has to be made so now Zero and Ichii, the magicians, have to protect her from others while waiting for the medicine to be completed.“
How is it a magical boy?
These boys are wizards who can perform magic. There are plenty of wizards that came from the other world in order to obtain the Crystal Pearl. When Nina swallows this, Nina is subjected to all the crazy magic from other wizards, while two wizards protect her. They do not have a transformation sequence, but their magic is used in battles. Nina, however, subject to this magic, has been transformed into a baby, and much more.
When did it air? This one is old. It aired in July of 2006 and ended in September of 2006. It was a total of 13 episodes.
Do I recommend it?
A lot of people hate this anime, but I liked it. I recommend it if you want something that’s only a four hour waste. The manga is split into two different series, but I recommend it too.
Any others?
Ones that I didn’t cover? Seint Seiya doesn’t count, but I guess it could, but I don’t count this one. And Negima! But I refuse to write anything about that one whatsoever.
That’s all. That concludes this thought dump. I wonder what I’ll cover next?
