Feels like summer is so close! This is a concept from when I was working with Disney and Mc Donalds that had the core characters acting in movies as other characters. This concept is Minnie as Ariel has always felt so very cute fun and summery to me. Just recently while talking to a dear friend I was reminded how much these characters mean to so many people. A design team that doesn’t design? Not exactly. In organizations where problems are highly complex and require multiple cross functional partners to solve them design becomes a strategic partner. When this happens the focus of the designer shifts listening to challenges, understanding the constraints, partnering with functional experts to then develop the strategy needed to deliver innovative solutions. In this scenario, the bulk of the spend is allocated to external support, and salary to ensure the organization is using the top external talent available while employing agents of design internally to translate and drive organizational needs. Training updates internal design managers with latest tools and techniques to build skills in identifying and recruiting top external support. Prototypes and samples are funded to enable quick ad hoc internal discussions building out ideas and driving alignment. Materials enable internal facilitation of critical alignment meetings. When designing teakettles the best way for me to start was in profile. Then quickly move into simple 3D volumetrics to understand details and sizing. The design process should be flexible and fluid and the tools used to deliver the best results in the quickest way possible. I believe the 3D was rendered in Pengiun. Ever wonder how the money gets spent for corporate design teams? Depending on the focus of your team the budget is spent differently. Over the next few weeks I will share out some of things I have learned over my career. To help us ask better questions and understand how our teams work and where the different teams focus. [or should be focusing] This week let’s look at a design team where all the design, and development happens internally. In this scenario, the bulk of the spend is allocated to salary, and training to maintain a mix of talent while staying current with relevant skills. When I look at furniture my first thought is how will the user be interacting. What are the challenges that need to be over come. Then when there is the opportunity to mix materials in a functionally beautiful way it is a bonus. This particular concept has a large area to sit with bent wood arm rests and chrome plated legs. When looking to make a difference it is always good to understand which industries are aligned to that ideal. Although it is not fool proof, looking at spend in research and development by industry can be a good guide post to help understand where innovation is happening. If you find yourself looking to contribute in an industry that is not heavily invested in R&D, when you are researching the company look to understand how much they invest in R&D, innovation, or new product development. This takes some digging however it will help to make sure the goals of the company align with your personal goals. If you can’t find that information ask the question durning the interview process. The way a company invests will tell you how serious they are about making a difference.
