My issue with Starfleet (across like all the trek series) is the writers they don’t have the balls to commit to “Starfleet is a military organization” or to “Starfleet is a nonmilitary organization” and explore what that means so it ends up in this spineless territory where Starfleet is peaceful and loves exploration except they also can swoop in guns blazing when there’s an Action Episode and everyone gets an awesome laser rifle and they explode ships full of The Bad Guys and no one faces any ramifications because the Bad Guys were Obviously Bad. If you really picked a direction you could explore how Starfleet being military is a remnant of a bygone age and they’re working to undo this history of needless violence OR how Starfleet is trying to be peaceful but is forced into these morally gray situations where theyhave to use military force or things will get worse. And given. Some shows and episodes actually do explore these topics, but across the board there refusal to actually dive into What Starfleet Is.

It also brings the question of why our Beloved Starfleet Heroes would join Starfleet in the first place. Star Trek is set in a socialist utopia where all needs are provided for, so what are the reasons for these characters in joining a paramilitary organization. But in the show it’s presented as Being in Starfleet Is the Norm and of course everyone would be in the Fleet / want to be in the Fleet (again. with a few exceptions 🤭). Trek also falters cuz it uses the boring military aesthetic (structure, rank, uniforms, divisions, etc) but none of the actual tradition or customs that is what makes the military the Military. It’s like a bunch of office coworkers who are roleplaying military. Like where’s the specialty uniforms.. the songs.. the ribbons and camaraderie and stupid traditions and sayings…. If you leaned into that it would be a really interesting way to deconstruct the military expectations of Starfleet but mostly i think it’s funny af to ruthlessly steal everything from the military to use as props for your stupid awesome camp scifi show (as long as it’s used to make fun of and doesn’t fall into actual jingoism military propaganda). lol !

Martin Luther King once convinced her to continue on as Uhura when she was about to quit. He told her how she was a role model for so many people and had to stay on. He rightfully recognized her as a trailblazer and the inspiration she continued to be.
