Frettatiminn Newspaper Review | City State
By Thorarinn Thorarinsson
★★★★
City State; A hardboiled crime thriller.
Let’s get straight to the point. Olaf De Fleur’s CityState is an incredibly cool hardboiled crime thriller which raises the bar for the Icelandic crime thriller genre. The actors were fantastic, the cinematography was slick, and the film has an intoxicatingly cool style and feel about it.
It doesn’t hurt that the film realistically depicts Iceland’s underworld, with of course minor embellishes to build suspense. Even though the violence in the film is very rough, it’s very tastefully handled and shouldn’t drive anyone away. The fights scenes are beautifully choreographed by Mjölnir MMA fight-club.
Olaf De Fleur is a gentle soul, as witnessed in his previous films and would never offer up an empty plate of action and violence. You could say that film is split up in three parts; Sergej a Serbian immigrant, Andrea a young policewoman and Gunnar a crime boss. None of these characters are model citizens but still you can’t help connecting with them and the people in their lives.
The worlds of these three characters collide violently, when Sergej’s wife miscarries after an attack from Gunnar’s thugs. Sergej proceeds to gather a group of tough fellow Serbians, comes full force, after his new enemy Gunnar. Andrea and her police cohorts then land smack in the middle of Gunnar’s and Sergej’s personal war.
It’s certainly not easy to create a story with as many characters as City State and manage to weave them expertly together like Olaf does in the film. He’s not re-inventing the wheel, and uses a story telling device from Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, which was clearly the best solution to a complex story.
There’s not enough room here to praise every single actor in an amazing cast. Ingvar E. Sigurdsson rarely fails to deliver and certainly didn’t this time around. Ágústa Eva was wonderful in her portrayal of Andrea, an innocent flower turned into an avenging angel. Sigurður Sigurjónsson’s fantastic performance as a corrupt policelieutenant is in a league of its own. With all that said, the star of the film is without a doubt Zlatko Krickic which blew the audience away with his portrayal of Sergej. There are barely words to describe the brilliant balance of tenderness and toughness in his performance. An amazing actor! And an absolutely amazing film!

Filmophilia Review | City State
Ólafur Jóhannesson (or Olaf de Fleur) and his mates at Poppoli Pictures have had a very productive career since they came onto the scene in 2004 with the documentary Blindsker, about the Icelandic pop star Bubbi Morthens. Since then they have made an average of nearly one movie per year (which is quite a lot for Icelandic filmmakers, the average is more like one every 3-4 years). Most of these films are documentaries but there are also a couple of feature films, Stóra Planið (The Higher Force) and Kurteist Fólk (Polite People), the latter which premiered earlier this year. Both of these films were comedies and most of their documentaries have been rather humorous, but their newest movie, Borgríki (City State), is a different beast altogether. It’s a very serious crime thriller describing the criminal underworld of Iceland. It’s also very different from most Icelandic thrillers, as they have usually been some sort of whodunit murder mysteries. People get killed in this movie but there’s nothing mysterious about the killings.

Nordisk Film & Tv Fond News | Olaf de Fleur
21.10.2011
City State (Borgríki), the latest film from the prolific Icelandic filmmaker Olaf de Fleur which opened domestically last weekend has already been snatched for a US remake to be directed by the Academy award-nominated James Mangold (Walk the Line).
Olaf De Fleur (also known as Ólafur Jóhannesson) describes City State as a drama/thriller about a Serbian mechanic that loses his unborn child after an attack from a drug gang. When he decides to revenge, he tangles his fate together with a police woman, a corrupt sergeant and crime kingpin. The film starring Ágústa Eva Erlendsdóttir, Ingvar E. Sigurdsson, and Sigurdur Sigurjónsson, was co-written by de Fleur with Hrafnkell Stefánsson for the director's Poppoli Pictures, with support from the Icelandic Film Centre, the Icelandic Ministry of Industry, and SVT in Sweden. The thriller opened last weekend for a second place at the Icelandic box office after the animated film Thor-Valhalla.
The US deal on City State is the first of its kind to de Fleur who was nominated for the 2009 Nordic Council Film Prize with The Amazing Truth about Queen Raquela. Speaking about this major break to nordiskfilmogtvfond.com, the director said "We sent City State out and many people helped us spread the word. Then the film ended up with Danny Sherman at Principal Management. I signed with them, and then it snowballed. Everybody really liked the film. I also joined WME (William Morris Endeavor) talent agency and through those parties the film is being packaged into a remake with James Mangold involved. I think he is perfect for the film. Everything he does is so dynamic."
The US remake will be developed by Mangold and his partner Cathy Konrad in Tree Line Films with Danny Sherman and Josh Kessiman of Principal Entertainment. Although final details of the deal were not sealed with de Fleur at press time, the Icelandic director said he would most likely have an executive producer credit on the US remake. World sales are also being negociated on the original Icelandic film.
The US deal on City State demonstrates again that Nordic writers/directors‘ are hot items with Hollywood producers hungry for original scripted material, especially in the crime genre. Iceland‘s biggest export name Baltasar Kórmakur has locked the Universal film Contrabandbased on the icelandic film Reykjavik Rotterdam which he produced, wrote and starred in.The Mark Wahlberg vehicle produced by Universal will hit US screens in January 2012.
