I wasn’t defending Thatti. I perfectly understand why her art makes people uncomfortable, and I’m all for fighting against normalizing suggestive art of the kiddos. I’m just saying it’s a futile endeavor, because she clearly seems to be very stubborn in her ways (she would not have been banned from the Discord if that were not the case).

Otherwise, you bring up fair points that I didn’t consider in my original argument. Thanks Books!

I hate to be “that guy”, but....

I don’t like the idea of sexualizing fictional child characters any more than y’all do, but the sad fact of the matter is, stuff like this is going to happen in every fandom, regardless of your opinion on it (why do you think Rule 34 exists?). If you can believe it, Thatti is actually on the lower end of the spectrum in this regard. Why? Because at least in all of her drawings (as far as I know), Hat Kid is fully clothed. You really wanna give yourselves a heart attack? Go to Paheal and see how many pictures of Hat Kid there are (it’s 477, as of this posting, BTW). Personally, I see that the best way to deal with stuff like this is to ignore it, because she’s clearly not going to stop.

Also, I find it funny how you guys seem to take issues with Thatti’s drawings, and yet are perfectly OK with Hat Kid getting beaten LITERALLY INTO A BLOODY PULP BY MU AND GETTING IMPALED BY A KNIFE.

RANT ABOUT “CAPTAIN MARVEL” AND WHY THE NAME-CALLING IN HOLLYWOOD (ON BOTH SIDES) NEEDS TO STOP

OK, it’s early in the morning, and I felt like writing this, so I’m going to do it before I lose the energy to do so. Today, we’re going to discuss one of the most idiotic controversies in modern history (that’s still occurring right now!). By that I mean there is no “correct” side by any stretch of the imagination. Whoever you align yourself with, you’re aligning yourself with a pack of idiots saying idiotic things for idiotic reasons. More ink has been spilled on Captain Marvel than has been spilled on most films (except that one that came out in 2016, something about ghost-hunters?), and only a small fraction of that ink has been used to say anything remotely intelligent.

Now, I’m not that big a fan of the Marvel films, so when I say that I wasn’t excited for Captain Marvel, it wasn’t due to “sexism” or “gatekeeping” or anything to that effect. Faced with the prospect of yet another Marvel movie in a world already full of them, I said, “No, thank you.” When it was first announced back in September, I thought “oh look, yet another Marvel movie. People are going out in droves to see it, talk about it for a little while, and then move on to the next one, as usual”. I came very quickly to feel as though that level of disinterest put me in the minority.

While there were unquestionably plenty of people who simply weren’t interested in this film, the overall tone of resistance came from a place of overt, clear misogyny. I’m certainly willing to believe that actual misogynists were in the minority. In fact, that’s what I deeply hope is the case. But their voices were loudest, strongest, and more sensational (therefore more media friendly) than whatever lukewarm criticisms might have been levied by more even-keeled individuals. Deliberate, organized assaults were made against the film’s Rotten Tomatoes page to artificially tank its ranking (which is a pretty scummy thing to do, I must admit).

But then again, you had the film’s defenders, most notably, Brie Larson herself. Just by sheer virtue of taking sides, the defenders legitimized the detractors. “Oh, this person gave it a rating of 1 star on Rotten Tomatoes? I’ll give it 5.” “ The detractors won’t go see it in theaters? I’ll go twice.” What I still believe was a vocal minority spat venom at a film they hadn’t seen, but it was no better to see the other side heaping praise upon a film they also hadn’t seen.

Don’t even get me started on Brie’s comments before the movie came out:

“About a year ago, I started paying attention to what my press days looked like and the critics reviewing movies, and noticed it appeared to be overwhelmingly white male. So, I spoke to Dr Stacy Smith at the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, who put together a study to confirm that. Moving forward, I decided to make sure my press days were more inclusive. After speaking with you, the film critic Valerie Complex and a few other women of colour, it sounded like across the board they weren’t getting the same opportunities as others. When I talked to the facilities that weren’t providing it, they all had different excuses.”

Do you realize, Ms. Larson, that no matter what the racial background or gender of the critic, they still lay down the verdict of whether or not they liked the movie? Do you also realize that you risked alienating potential customers (thus leading to the detractors) by saying that? Let’s be clear, if she wants more diversity in the movie reviewer circuit, that’s totally fine. But it shouldn’t be at the expense of all of the critics already out there.

Not to mention this little gem from ABC’s Twitter account:

Hey, ABC News, Wonder Woman called. She wants to know why you guys are ignoring her.

I dunno guys, maybe we could all just let a movie be a fucking movie and not worry that you can’t see it or that you have to see it based on the fact that there are women on the god damned poster. Don't let either side fool you into thinking that you will even remember this generic superhero movie after a month. Don't exchange shitty misogynist clickbait for shitty feminist clickbait. If you like the movie, then watch the movie, if you don't like it, then tell everyone to fuck off and do something that's actually fun with your time, like drawing or playing vidya, whatever floats your boat.
