ARIEL, THREE WAYS: So while I'm still toiling away on the calendar art for 2022, I happened to pick up Adam Thwaite's excellent "Celebrity Series 93," which provides a wonderful foundation for creating images featuring/"inspired by" Ariel Winter. These are three images I put together yesterday, just quick proofs really, but I'm very happy with the textures and there's very little tinkering to be done "under the hood" for the model itself, although of course my usual eye-straining and meticulous tweaking of pose, wardrobe, hair, and expression will be much more time-consuming for finished pieces. It's nice to have another celeb on the roster for my various projects. In actual calendar news, I should have some previews to share by month's end. "BAKA MITAI" I've recently become a huge fan of the #YakuzaGames (#YakuzaLikeADragon was my entry point and now I'm hooked). I know a lot of people think of #BakaMitai simply as meme-fodder, but it's a legitimate banger and I may or may not cry while singing it. 😭😭😭 After spending so much time in-game searching for that perfect score, I decided to make a little bit of tribute art with my #OC Cat Cruz on the mic, singing her little heart out and reflecting on how love makes fools of us all. NEW(ish) ART: I'm already hard at work on my 2022 art calendar (it has a Mucha-inspired theme!), as well as my 2022 pin-up calendar. Making and selling my first calendar last year taught me a lot of valuable lessons (including the most important one: START PROMOTING EARLIER, DUMB-DUMB). This is an alternative image I created for the 2021 calendar but didn't use. I was pleased with the overall results, but this was one of the first images I created for that calendar, and the model was suffering from a pretty common DAZ issue called "black sclera." It's a lighting issue that can make part or all of the sclera appear to be black in color (shocking, I know). And while the fix is fairly straightforward, it takes a bit of tinkering in Daz and another full session of rendering, so I moved on to another idea I liked better (the gal on the beach enjoying a Definitely-Not-A-Coke-Please-Don't-Sue-Me™). Anyway, I went ahead and fixed this in post, along with a few lighting tweaks and some tone adjustments. I still really like this particular image; I think the pose and materials turned out great, and there's something about the weirdly Brutalist architecture of the resort that provides a nice juxtaposition for the bathing beauty in the foreground. NEW #ART! Maeve Hawke, the Champion of Kirkwall. As many of you know, the Dragon Age series is one of my favorites, both as a narrative and for pure gaming entertainment. But Dragon Age II is my absolute favorite, and while I certainly love my Warden-Commander Amell* and Inquisitor Trevelyan, Hawke will probably always be my favorite. The combat, the banter, and the narrative were all far better than they had any right to be in a game rushed by an uncaring studio who simply didn't understand what makes a BioWare game great. Fortunately, BioWare did understand, and managed to produce something incredible despite the common complaints of repeated assets and a limited narrative framework.** I played Hawke as sarcastic but caring; purple with a tinge of blue. And while everyone has their preferences, I feel like Fem!Hawke was meant to be a mage, even if it means you're saddled with Cranky Carver the Boo-Hoo Baby™ instead of Bethany. The mage combat in DAII was amazing and has yet to be matched, by my lights. Nothing like a little Pull of the Abyss followed by Fist of the Maker and Chain Lightning to put the fear of god (or at least Hawke) into a wave of baddies. I'm excited for Dragon Age 4, but they could make 10 more games continuing Hawke's adventures and I'd be happy to play them all. I rendered this at a hefty 5120 x 2880 so as to maximize appreciable detail. Please note the special polished metal and colored glass used in the focus of Hawke's staff, as well as the custom fabric textures on the ribbons. Hawke's signature facepaint is hand-painted by me, with some light cosmetic touches to the lighting (and lightning!) effects. Made with love. Often, I think about what her life was like before The Resource Wars and the eruption of The Fae hardened her a little. She's been alive a long time—long enough to know that good and evil will balance themselves out, provided good has plenty of help—but sometimes she can't help thinking back to simpler times. Or maybe they just seem simpler, in retrospect. Not even demigods are immune to the Vaseline lens of nostalgia. At any rate, they say you can't go home again. In Cat's case, that's especially true, since the activation of PERUN turned her former mountainside home into part of the ghoul-haunted rim of the Scourge (along with most of East Texas, Western Louisiana, and points north) by driving the Hubris Mountains up from the scorched earth. Tom Wolfe knew what was up, I guess. I was very, very pleased with the lighting in this piece. Had to do a bit of fiddling in post because I realized I'd left her breakfast knife floating a millimeter or two in the air like a Kreskin Souvenir. But overall, I'm quite happy with the way this turned out, especially the hand-painted steam coming from the coffee cup and Cat's wistful gaze. Made with love. NEW ART: "THE COLD LIGHT OF DAY" I recently got my monitor situation sorted out, and so have a desktop that now measures 5120 by 1440 across two WQHD monitors. Naturally, I needed some new wallpaper for the new desktop, and so I decided to put together an idea that's been rattling around in my noggin' for a while now. Normally, Cat is the epitome of confidence in a conflict. But betrayal is a hard pill to swallow—demigod or not—and the image of Cat facing someone she loved turning against her inspired this image. I wanted to capture the conflict and the pain that comes with having to do what's right even though it feels like your heart is breaking. I created this image in Daz and did the post work in PS. I hand-painted the tear because none of the effects in Daz worked quite the way I wanted them to with the lighting effects I was using. I was very pleased with how the textures turned out, and I'll definitely be revisiting this HDRI for future pieces. Also, there IS a related story for this image but it's not fleshed out yet, and I still have to finish another submission this month. But stay tuned!
