Standing in front of too many edible options to count, Rüya’s hands were shoved deep into the pockets of her jacket as she tried to decide between the snickerdoodle cookies and a chocolate bar that claimed to be reminiscent of strawberry cheesecake. She was about to give up and snatch both off of the shelf, along with her regular sour gummies and a small bag of lollipops, when an incredibly familiar voice pulled her out of her thoughts. “Claire?” She asked before she’d even gotten a good look at the woman who’d asked the question, brows furrowed in confusion for a moment as she stared at someone she’d known back in New York.
“Holy shit, it is you.” The look of confusion on her face quickly morphed into elation, grin spreading across her features as she bound towards the other woman and wrapped her up in her arms. “You look amazing, babe! What are you doing in Colorado? How long have you been here?” She pulled back from the hug but kept her hands on Claire’s arms, eyes bright with excitement. “It’s so good to see you.”
.
Tumblr media
Claire blinked. It wasn’t until the other woman spoke that she realized she knew who she was staring at and her eyes widened. “Oh my God!” she gasped, standing a little too fast and wincing as she all but lunged into her old friend’s arms. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d seen her and was pretty sure it had to have been at least two or three years.
“This is where I grew up,” Claire replied, beaming also. “I just wanted to come back after...stuff. Y’know?” Her smile faltered as she said this, not really wanting to talk about it, but she didn’t want to lie to Rüya either. Claire hadn’t had many friends in her life. Being sick all the time and hardly ever able to go out did that to you. So the few friends she had, she cherished.
Forcing another smile, she added, “So how are you? What are you doing here?”

It was because of the solitude that Claire chose to relocate to Big Horn Hills when she returned to Providence Peak. After everything that had happened in her time away, it was really very nice to have a place of her own away from everything that haunted her.
She was surrounded by nature now instead and the quiet sounds that filled the air when she stepped out onto her back porch were far preferable to the overwhelming and unending noise of the city.
She was unpacking her kitchen, standing on her toes as she tried to add the casserole dishes and mixing bowls to one of the upper shelves, when she heard a knock at her door.
Her first instinct was to jump and turn towards the door, her eyes wide with fear, half expecting her ex to come bursting through it. When that didn’t happen, she closed her eyes briefly, stopped what she was doing, and went to the door. She wished for only a moment that there was a peephole she could reach before she let out a breath and opened the door.
“Hello?”

Chronic pain? He didn’t really know much about like, chronic pain. But he remembered the recovery process after the car accident, how much it had sucked. How bad it had been for those months– hell, even years later, he still had some pain. “Shit, I’m sorry. Uh… for like, the sleep stuff. Girl Scout Cookies is it. That really knocks me out sometimes.” Glancing at the woman, he could see the way she was forcing a smile. Fuck, he didn’t intend to make someone feel bad or anything.
Ozzie pulled his hood off and tapped his ears. “Dunno about chronic pain, but I sorta get it. My ears hurt sometimes cuz of… shit that happened. Weed helps.”
Tumblr media
Claire had spent a lifetime making people uncomfortable on accident because of her disabilities, but she still felt bad for it every single time and she winced when she saw his awkward expression. She looked away quickly, but looked back when he pulled down his hood. She stared at his ears and wanted to ask what that shit was, but everyone in Providence Peak had their skeletons and she didn’t want to stick her nose where it didn’t belong.
She offered a weak smile and said, “Yeah. That’s what I’ve found too.”

Milo tried to suppress his bubbling frustration as the woman ignored his question, and instead started talking about how she found herself in this unfortunate situation. He tapped his fingers against his steering wheel, craning his neck from side to side. “Cool story, but you didn’t answer my question. Do you need a lift somewhere? There’s an auto body shop not too far from here I could drop you off at. They should be able to help you out.”
Tumblr media
Claire glanced back the way she’d come. She couldn’t see her car anymore in the darkness, and being out in the cold for this long likely wasn’t good for her heart anyway, so she turned back to the man in the car and nodded. “Yeah,” she said, approaching the car, still tentative. “Yeah, that’d be great. Thanks.”

“Jesus fuckin’ Christ.” Milo slightly jerked in response to the woman’s shrill scream. He stared at the stranger in slight disbelief. “I didn’t do it on purpose. Maybe you should be paying more attention when you’re standing on the side of the road,” he huffed in frustration. He was starting to wish he had just kept on driving. “Do you need a ride or something? I can give you a quick lift somewhere.”
Tumblr media
–– Claire deflated quickly and winced at her kneejerk response. “S-sorry,” she stammered. You just...startled me is all.” She forced a weak and tired smile. “My stupid car broke down because for some reason I thought I could go out in the snow without chains on my tires.” She huffed. “It just...sucks...” she finally muttered quietly. She stared back the way she’d come; how was she going to afford to get a tow truck out here to get it, and how on Earth was she going to pay to get it fixed?

Charlie had never been much into drugs, other than the odd experiment at parties back in his college, drinking was his limit when it came down to it. However, Rachel had been using it for the pain during her more difficult weeks and, though it’d been a while, he liked to make sure they were prepared for anything. It hadn’t taken too long after walking into the dispensary to admit to himself that he probably should’ve asked her what to buy first.
“I’m gonna be honest, I don’t know shit about all this, sorry. I’m just picking some stuff up for my wi-girlfriend,” he admitted, walking over to peer at the shelves next to her. Squinting at the strains, as was to be expected, made him no less clueless, but he pointed to one all the same. “That one looks fancy. Purple Punch… huh. Who comes up with these names anyway?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
–– Claire, not wanting to pry and make the man uncomfortable, didn’t ask about the quick correction from ‘wife’ to ‘girlfriend’ when talking about his significant other. Of course, she was curious – who wouldn’t be? But she was also fully aware of how much that was not her business.
Straightening from her crouched position in front of other counter, she grimaced as her spine and muscles disagreed with how to settle within her. Trying to ignore the pain in her lower back, she forced a smile that really just looked like a grimace and approached the other man, smiling at his statement.
“I think my favorite name is either Granddaddy Purple and Sour Diesel,” she replied, pointing to the labeled bags inside the case the man was standing near. When his first response registered, she looked at him and asked, “She have chronic pain too?”
Despite being disabled and sick most of her life, Claire was always surprised when she met or learned of other people like her. It helped to battle her constant feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Looking around the dispensary, Ozzie rubbed his chin. He liked smoking every now and then– now being more often than then, given Colorado and the abundant supply of dispensaries. Even in a place like Providence Peak, there was a shop with a punny nickname and only slightly overpriced weed for sale. It beat buying shit from a dealer back in Illinois for damn sure. Nah, he liked going into a well lit store with corny names and stoney hipsters behind the counter.
Ozzie blinked when the woman a few feet away turned and looked up at him. “Huh?” He said, slowly piecing together her words before realizing she was looking for advice. “Oh. Uh… I’m no like, weed expert. But Girl Scout Cookies is great if you wanna get like… real blazed. Blue Dream is also fun, more of a body high?” He offered, thinking back to the pre-roll’s he’d gotten last week. “What sorta high do you like?”
Tumblr media
–– Claire bit on her lip and retuned her gaze to the bags in the glass case set into the counter before straightening. “A full body high,” she responded as she crossed her arms over her chest and approached the man. “It...helps with my chronic pain and sleep issues the most.”
She forced a smile, but it didn’t reach her eyes. Even after so many years away from her parents and her exboyfriend, she still felt ashamed admitting she had a chronic illness and half expected the man next to her to scoff or tell her that she looked just fine or any one of the numerous statements that always left her questioning herself later.

–– Claire was furious. Mostly with herself, but also with her stupid fucking car. It wasn’t the greatest contraption to begin with, so she really didn’t know why it was a good idea to go on a twenty minute drive both ways without four wheel drive or chains on her tires in the snow. It was probably the dumbest decision she’d made so far, especially with her already frail health, and now she was paying for it. She was so focused on walking and trying to stay warm and cursing that she didn’t see the other car roll up next to her. She didn’t even know anyone was there until the man spoke.
She let out a shriek of shock and jumped, turning at the same time, saying breathlessly, her fragile heart hammering in her chest, “Oh my God, you-you scared the shit out of me.”

Milo wasn’t usually the type to go out of his way to help someone. When he first saw the other stranded on the side of the snowy road, he kept on driving past. That irksome thing called his conscience eventually had the former drug dealer turning around to see if the person needed any assistance. Milo drove his truck to a slow stop once he reached the other, rolling down the driver’s side window to catch their attention. “Hey there. You need a hand with something, or maybe a lift somewhere? It’s pretty fuckin’ chilly out here.”

–– Claire would be lying if she said going into the dispensary didn’t raise her spirits. She’d learned early on as a teenager with parents who refused to care for her and doctors that refused to listen to her that the best alternative to legal medication was legal drugs. Plus it helped with her nausea and depression and sleep issues as well.
The smell of the dispensary was obvious, but still pleasant to her as she stepped up to the counter, looking through the glass at the displays where there were bowls, grinders, and ounces of marijuana with little plastic price tags set next to each one. She needed a new bowl. And some more weed. Even though she was medicated now, there were some things the pain pills just couldn’t do.
Crouching in front of the display, she turned her head to the person standing a few feet off to her left, and asked, “Do you have any recommendations? I’m...not really familiar with any of these strains.”

BIOGRAPHY
To say Claire has had a difficult life would be putting it rather mildly. Having been born with a body that rebelled against her from the beginning – she was diagnosed at birth with a heart condition – was bad enough, but having parents who neglected her needs made it that much worse.
Though her heart condition was mild and not fatal, her familiarity with illness didn’t begin and end there; when she was ten she got mono. The illness itself only lasted a couple weeks, but the effects of it remained, leaving Claire with joints and bones that ached. But nothing was done about it.
Mr. John Daniels and Mrs. Cheryl Daniels, both wealthy Providence Peak natives from Summit Lake, thought having a chronically ill and disabled daughter would ruin their reputation. As a result, only the bare minimum was done to manage Claire’s disabilities and illnesses.
It wasn’t until Claire fainted during gym class at school when she was thirteen that something was finally done about the pain and fatigue she’d dealt with for the vast majority of her life. She learned at the hospital the pain in her back was caused by scoliosis; as for her joint pain and fatigue, it took more testing to at last determine the cause: myalgic encephalomyelitis. And while she was relieved to know at last what was wrong with her, she was also unbearably depressed that there was no treatment and no cure for it either. She would just have to take pain medication and learn to cope with it as best she could.
However, the Daniels saw the revelation of Claire’s disability as shameful and moved out of Providence Peak immediately after that. They ended up in New York where Claire finished school and went to college...or at least tried to before she had to drop out due to a rapid and sudden decline in her health.
Throughout this time, she had no medication to manage her symptoms and she’d never really gone to therapy to deal with the effects of how her parents treated her growing up.
Which was why it was so easy for Bill to get a hold of her.
She met him at college. He was studying to become a neuroscientist and she’d wanted to either go into astronomy or volcanology. When she had to drop out, they’d already been seeing each other for a few months, and since she was going to be kicked out of the dorms, Bill offered to let her move in with him.
This was a mistake.
It turned out that the nice man who took her to movies and the park and let her move in with him so she wouldn’t be homeless was actually a brute and had no intention of paying for her medication, claiming she couldn’t really be sick because she’d been just fine without it.
Physically violent, he put her in the hospital more than once and very nearly killed her too. This lasted for nearly seven years before Claire was finally able to safely plan and execute her escape, the only problem that remained after was where to go.
Despite the unfortunate experience that had been her childhood, she found herself drawn back to Providence Peak. She bought herself a small hobby farm in Bighorn Hills, wanting to surround herself with animals and nature and stay away from rich neighborhoods she grew up in. She took over Portable Magic, a bookstore in Summit Lake, for the previous owner, who no longer could do the upkeep on it.
Claire takes the days as they come and tries very hard not to think ahead or behind. She desperately loves the animals on her farm just as much as she loves watching the stars at night. She’s finally managed to get herself on some medication to help manage her illnesses and has mobility aids for when things get difficult.
She loves it here.
