Elvis was singing a classic and it was...horrible. Claudia had been in stitches at first, but by now, she was over it and ready to move on to the next person singing karaoke vaguely related to their costume. “Are you also totally done with this?” she asked the person nearest her.

Phoenix smiled at the customer’s reaction. She was amused and a bit surprised but not freaked out at all. This was going to be a good tour.
“My great uncle, who owns the Shack, has been collecting these oddities for as long as I can remember.” Phoenix truly had no idea how old most of the pieces were, or how long Grunkle Leon had been at collecting this stuff. She and Griffin had been roped into making a few of the newest pieces, though. “We also keep an eye out for unexplained and strange items.”
She continued the tour into the next room. It was a room of magical items, most completely fake. They included a crystal ball the size of a basketball, several crystals of different types amalgamated together, and a mounted mirror labeled “the looking glass.” There was also a pair of glasses and a hat floating in the corner, labeled “the invisible man,” and a “sack of mystery” that claimed to hold all of the horrors of the world.
Tumblr media
Claudia nodded a few times to show she’d understood before following along with the tour. The magical items were all clearly fake, but still amusing and interesting to look at nonetheless. The “sack of mystery” in particular drew her attention more than anything else. She couldn’t help herself from moving closer and peering at it from various angles. “So what exactly are all the horrors of the world?” she asked. “Or even just, like, a few horrors?”

“Brand new,” Audrey confirmed with a nod. It was probably a little rude, but even though the woman was speaking to her Audrey found herself still watching Bailey’s every move. There was something sort of addicting about observingthe sheer joy of a pup at play. Stick chasing had never been so interesting or cute. “I’ve only had here since yesterday, uh, late yesterday. Stopped by the shelter just to look and bam, there she was, like fate or something. Fate the Shoe Eater.” Audrey laughed at her own joke. “Are you a dog-parent? Or more of a cat person?”
Tumblr media
The touching story of the dog being adopted so quickly immediately warmed Claudia’s heart, and also brought a million questions to mind. “What shelter was it?” she asked, and stopped shy of spewing out a dozen more to wait and see how much she could get in response off the bat. It was far too easy for her to become so interested and wrapped up in other people’s lives in a moment that she sometimes had to remind herself to just take it a little slower. “I’m an all-animals kind of person, though I guess I have kind of a weird affinity with birds.” She chuckled to herself, mentally giving herself a high-five for personal inside joke. “Right now my schedule is too crazy for any pet, though. And I have a roommate and a whole host of things other reasons why so, like, it just wouldn’t work out right now. But I love when I get to encounter these little fluffballs around town,” she sang, ruffling up the dog’s fur a little.

Frankie raised an eyebrow at the woman’s attitude towards the bartender. It wasn’t exactly rude, but she was definitely used to getting what she wanted. Xe would make sure to leave a good tip for the bartender’s trouble, especially if the cherry truly was exceptional.
Frankie chuckled. Getting a little ahead of themselves, weren’t they? Xe would play along though. “Of course not. You only sparked the flame. What happens next is up to them. So which one is your friend? Or are they both?”
Tumblr media
Claudia was about to interrupt when the right option popped up and she nodded enthusiastically. “Both my friends,” she declared proudly before taking a sip of her drink. “Crazy how I didn’t think of this before, honestly, but sometimes genius takes time.” Suddenly realizing that she’d been plowing along without an introduction, Claudia stuck out her hand with a grin. “I’m Claudia, by the way.”

On another day, he wouldn’t have been so annoyed by his sister, but today was already stressful enough. Having her hear that she actually, sometimes, occasionally was useful wasn’t something he wanted her to hear. All he’d been dealing with today was prank calls and then occasionally helpful small tasks like making sure someone was alright. That wouldn’t be something Claudia was interested in. She was probably expecting something way more interesting. He knew her to well. Lucio followed her into the restaurant and smiled at the greeter.
“Not much,” he admitted. There were a lot of things happening in Edgewood. He was trying to sniff out something that was actually worth going after. “I am meeting people. Slowly. My main concern is work.” Lucio looked at the window of the restaurant. “What counts as fun? All of my time is monopolized by work and other things.”
Claudia immediately perked up when her brother said he was meeting people, but it withered a little with the added mention of slowly. In their lifetimes they’d both moved around a bit, but she secretly hoped her brother would settle in, or at least near, Edgewood so she could be close to him. She was tied there until she died, after all...a bleak thought that almost instantly started to sour her mood, so she forced her way through it with a beaming smile. “You still need to make time for fun things,” she insisted. “Go to a movie, go to a bar, as someone on a date just to have some one on one time with someone new. There are a ton of fun things you can do outside of work and other things. There’s a ton of hiking trails, too. There’s lots to do around here, you just have to make time to do them.”

The date had gone well, but not well enough for Claudia to deny meeting up with some girlfriends after instead of going somewhere else with the Tinder match-up. She’d already had a couple glasses of wine at dinner, and downed a few more while helping the other girls get ready. It was a crisp, easy to drink white that she knocked back like apple juice. Her cheeks were warm enough for her to find the cooler autumn air much more pleasant than some of her friends that were hurrying from the Uber to the bar. Claudia took her time, realizing just as she got to the door that she had absolutely no cash on her. Despite her friends’ protests, she insisted on going to the ATM around the corner on her own. If she did encounter anything or anyone dangerous, she didn’t want to get someone else involved. Or let them see her unrestricted reaction.
As soon as Claudia rounded the corner and spotted a figure ahead, it felt as if a knot briefly formed and untied at the center of her chest. She recognized the feeling - as if she was suddenly more alive than anything around her. It was a feeling she couldn’t recall ever having on a sunny day, but this was Edgewood and things had been weird lately. Intuition told her to be cautious, and she took quick but measured steps to move closer to the ATM. As she got closer, it became obvious this was a woman and Claudia was just about to pass her when she suddenly turned - so fast Claudia didn’t have time to stop before they collided. Claudia remained collected as she took a step back, but the sudden movement certainly startled her enough to make her heart rate jump.
Being so close to the woman made that knot in her chest form and untie again, and her frantic speaking and movements did nothing to assure Claudia this was just her being on high alert. It took a few seconds for Claudia to recognize the woman as the new bartender at Two Old Crows. Last time Claudia saw the woman she’d been significantly calmer, but nothing about her then set off such a strange feeling in the Benandante. Maybe a fluke, or maybe there was someone (or something) else lurking nearby. “It’s alright, it’s alright,” she assured the woman, letting out a dry laugh that betrayed her sudden relief. “I’m totally fine. Are you okay, though?” The frantic nature the woman had just a moment before led Claudia to believe she might be under the influence of something. “Did you take something? I’m with some friends just up the street, we can get you some water and an Uber or ride home.”
Faith, Trust, and Bad Pixie Dust
To say Juliet was nervous, was an understatement. But her nerves were also masked by her excitement. She pulled out one of the tubes from her pocket and took a little bit of the Pixie Dust on her tongue. The sugary, granulated substance dissolved almost immediately. She wasn’t sure how much she was supposed to take, so she did a little bit at first, and waited. She pressed her lips together and stood there for a few minutes before taking more. After she was finished, she shoved the vile back into her pocket and began walking aimlessly.
She had no idea where she was going, or what she wanted to do, all she knew was that she was already starting to feel the affects of the drug. Her skin was practically vibrating and she felt… well, she no longer really felt like a Vampire. How was that possible? Warmth spread along her body and she couldn’t help but giggle. The sometimes sad, and always widowed, woman, was happy. Joyous, even. More so than normal.
But this… this was different. She glanced down at her fingers, her body itching to use any, and all, of the energy that the Pixie Dust was giving her. She tilted her head to the side. Was that… sparks? Lightning? No way. Juliet thought to herself as her eyes widened. Did she have magic again?
She turned and ran right into someone. Her eyes widened even more as she noticed the electricity that was on her hands, was now radiating around the person in front of her. Not knowing it was a hallucination, Juliet began freaking out. “Oh my god, I’m so sorry!” She quickly shoved her hands into her pocket. “I didn’t mean to harm you I–” She shook her head back and forth. Her mother always warned her about magic.
Just as quickly as the electricity appeared, it was now gone. She let out a breath. “Are you okay?”

Like any child with a penchant for dramatics, Claudia had always loved Halloween. In such a healthy household, the deluge of candy was like a dream, too. As she got older, her love never diminished. Even as she learned more about the supernatural attachments to the holiday, she didn’t ever lose that whimsical feeling that seemed to bubble up at the start of October. It led into a brilliant whimsical Thanksgiving and Christmas feeling after, which left her walking on clouds for nearly the entirety of fall and early winter. Even with the eerily odd feeling that had fallen over the town since Friday the 13th last month, she still refused to be deterred.
Outside of her patrol schedule, she was being Called almost every night to help with a patrol or investigate something that seemed off. The extra couple hours she had after work one night were the first hours entirely to herself in some time, and she knew exactly what she wanted to do - go Halloween costume shopping. It always took a couple shopping trips at least to pick out her costumes, and she nearly always had two costumes available in the hopes of attending a couple parties. It’d been some time since she went with a costume with a wig and she found herself drawn to the wall, examining each piece closely.
When another woman at the wall spoke, Claudia met the question with a warm smile. “Extremely flattering. You might even want to adopt that hairstyle year-round.”
Halloween was one of Bridgette’s favorite times of year. She loved dressing up, she loved trick-or-treating, and as she got older, she loved attending Halloween parties. She loved that for one night, she could be whoever or whatever she wanted to be. She loved that magic was real for everyone on Halloween, powers or no powers. Now, with only a few weeks left before The Big Day, Bridgette realized that she still didn’t have a costume. Because of this realization, Bridgette found herself browsing through costumes, waiting for inspiration to strike. “What do you think about this one?” She asked, turning to the other person looking at the wig wall.

Claudia beamed and immediately leaned down to pet the dog, making little kissy faces and rubbing around her ears. “Oooh, well, it sounds like you two are new to each other,” Claudia observed. She gingerly drew her foot away from the dog’s mouth and took a few steps away to pick up a stick resting on another picnic bench. Probably left behind by another dog owner or a kid who’d been playing with it. She wagged it a few times in front of Bailey before tossing it just a few feet away. “I don’t mind,” she assured the woman with an easy smile. “Got these shoes on a crazy discount so they’ll probably fall apart tomorrow anyway. How long have you had Bailey in the family?”
claudia-rinaldi‌:
Dog.
It was the first thought that popped into Claudia’s head when she looked up from where she’d been reading on her tablet at a park table. She’d met a friend for lunch at a restaurant near the park and, with some time to spare, she decided to have an impromptu moment of idleness and bliss - reading humorous poetry in the open air. She didn’t realize until her grin grew even wider that she’d been smiling since she sat down. Elated by the simple beauty of the moment (and maybe the few glasses of wine she had at lunch…), Claudia tucked her tablet into her purse and carefully approached the other table so as not to startle the dog or the woman.
“She’s absolutely adorable,” Claudia said after she was fully in view of the woman. “Is it alright if I pet her? I’m sorry, is the dog a girl?”
Tumblr media
Ah – a handful and a heart thief. Audrey had stopped counting how many people had fawned over Bailey somewhere around twenty. If she was forced to guess, she’d say she was somewhere in the every-person-in-town range, approximately. Everyone who wasn’t a cat person, at least.
“Go ahead,” Audrey laughed, “yeah, her name’s Bailey. Give her a scratch. She might chase a stick if you’ve got one handy, I dunno, haven’t tried fetch yet. She got a huge kick out of fighting me for my sock this morning, though. And her leash, stop that.” The final words were directed at the pup as Audrey flapped her fingers in an attempt to get Bailey to stop gnawing on her lead. It was successful, but seemingly only because there were more interesting things about. Namely, Claudia’s shoes. Bailey was already testing their edibility.
“Ah, sorry. Apparently I’m going to need a lot of chew toys or else all of my shoes will be forfeit.”

Claudia drummed her fingers on the table a few times as she thought it over. “I guess their artwork shows what they want to say, but that’s all up to interpretation and could be taken the wrong way,” she said. “An interview could clear the air and tell people the perspective they should be looking at this artwork through.” She sighed and shook her head a few times. “I don’t understand these people who want to stay anonymous when they’re trying to do something good. It makes it too mystical and makes being a decent human who’s capable of this stuff seem mystical too. Kinda defeats the point.”
claudia-rinaldi‌:
Claudia sat back in her chair more comfortably as she listened to Mateo. “So what’s your plan with this? Just to cover it, or to find out who’s behind them and try to get an exclusive with them? Would that put them in danger of facing any vandalism charges?”
Tumblr media
“Currently, I’m just covering the basics of the story,” Mateo said with a shrug of his shoulders. “But maybe I’ll start to dig into who’s behind them. We’ll see if I decide to interview them, and if they’ll want to be interviewed, or keep the secret to myself.” He smiled halfway and shrugged his shoulders again. “Then again, it depends on if I actually find them. If I do find them, I could offer to interview them and keep them anonymous. They might like that someone wants to hear what they have to say.”

Claudia grinned at his remarks and tossed her hair a little over her shoulder. Call her cocky, many had, but she felt she had a right to be. It wasn’t as if she hadn’t worked hard or sacrificed in her life. The response about the prank calls brought a deep frown to Claudia’s face that broke once there was a server to be greeted at the entrance to the restaurant. She was pointed toward an open table and started over immediately.
“So, outside of work, what’s been going on with you?” she asked him, her look mostly serious aside from the little glint in her eye. “Are you meeting people? Getting up to anything fun?”
claudia-rinaldi‌.
Claudia hummed softly to herself as she listened to his description of the morning. She was eager to know what kind of misfortunes he’d been dealing with, but she also didn’t want to drain him by talking about it when he still had hours left on his shift. Maybe they could talk about it later. Glancing up at the cloud that was approaching, Claudia had a feeling she might not actually be around later if it proved to be something more than just a witch’s prank or an unusual supernatural phenomenon.
“Enough to make me glad I took the day off,” she admitted. If she hadn’t, she surely would’ve been late enough to work that she heard from her boss about it. It was just pure luck, ironically, that she’d been scheduled to have a longer visit with Valen that day and decided to take the whole day off. “I know you probably don’t want to talk about work too much, but were there at least any funny calls that came in to break up the monotony of Friday the 13th unlucky drudgery?”
Tumblr media
As much as he loved his sister, Lucio didn’t want to talk about this sort of thing with her. She was already better than him at everything else, he wasn’t going to give her the opportunity to get better at his job than he was. He would indulge some of her questions, but others he planned on keeping tight lipped. Besides, he really shouldn’t be talking about any open investigations with her. Official Edgewood business would remain under lock and key. He’d discuss some of his supernatural cases with her, sometimes. Lucio refused to talk about them all, especially their parent’s case, which he desperately wanted to close.
“Well we can’t all be the Great Claudia Rinaldi, can we?” he asked, tone joking. Though his words weren’t necessarily a joke. Working gave him an excuse to meet people. He could have found a bunch of different jobs in Edgewood, but being police officer was for the best. “No, I really don’t.” Lucio hoped he’d made that point clear already. “I mean there’s always funny calls this time of year. People think it’s funny to pull pranks on other people because it’s in the spirit of Halloween. Whatever that means.”

Frankie was enjoying a fairly quiet night–as quiet as it could be at the bar–sipping xir mohito and chatting with the bartender, when an extremely excited singsong reached xir ears. Xe turned curiously with an amused expression. To the assistant principal’s surprise, the person was around xir age and she plopped down right next to xem. Frankie was about to ask what was so exciting when the question was answered for xem.
“Make that a Manhattan, then,” xe said to the bartender xe had already been talking to.  Frankie laughed goodheartedly and held out xir hand to the newcomer. “Hello, new friend. I guess I am now part of this epic tale you are creating.” Xe nodded xir head towards the couple. They really did seem to be having a good time so far.
Tumblr media
“Oooh, how fancy!” Claudia exclaimed. She waved to make sure to catch the bartender’s attention. “Make sure you give her the best cherry.”
Claudia was absolutely beaming and practically hopped into the available chair. “Super epic. When they get married they better mention me in their vows because I’m totally responsible for all of it.” She shrugged as she took a sip of her new drink. “Or, you know, if it goes up in flames, then I take absolutely no credit.”

heatherpayne‌:
Heather didn’t pay much mind to Claudia checking her phone. She knew it was considered rude, but she didn’t need the other’s full attention right now. Also, she well understood how important it was to keep up with work–way more important than social ties in the chemist’s opinion. Heather was holding out hope that she would be with Claudia one day an important call came through.
“Yeah, there is only one class higher. But we have to test into it. That should pose no problem if the people who ran the gym weren’t so adamant that we needed to pay them for a set number of months before we were ready,” she said with frustration. “Greedy bastards,” she added under her breath. This was absolutely something she had fully researched and bitched about. It was a well-known and easy to grasp concept that people learned at different rates and started at different levels.
Heather rolled her eyes. “People will brag about the lowest of achievements. I had a guy brag once about his fighting skills he would use to protect me from the “bad men” unlike his “nice guy” ass.” She snorted and then grinned maniacally. “He wasn’t so tough once I asked him to show me some moves.”
It only took a few minutes to reach the sandwich place at their brisk pace. Heather held the door for Claudia and then followed her in. She looked around for an empty table, also keeping an eye out for suspicious persons and escape routes.
Tumblr media
“What the fuck, that’s dumb,” Claudia stated immediately. “Well, whenever you’re eligible for the test, let me know. I’d definitely want to try for it, too.” She wasn’t really sure if it was something she’d actually be interested in, especially if the advanced class was more serious  than what she already took. She liked the fun, social aspect of her current classes, but had a feeling something more intense might pull away from that. “I’m assuming it’s more money once you join, too.”
Talking about bad dates always amused Claudia, and she rolled her eyes at Heather’s story. “Yeah, I’ve dealt with a couple of those. I feel like if they all just talked and realized that shitty line doesn’t work, maybe they’d, you know, stop using it and stop all looking like over the top idiots?” She sighed and shrugged. “I complain so much about dating but, honestly, it’s been a while and I want to go on one soon. As long as they’re not an asshole, it’s kind of fun to get to know someone on a date.”
Claudia spotted an open table through the window and went for it once she was inside. “Are you working later today? How’s work been lately?”

phoenix-castillo‌:
Phoenix smiled along as the woman reacted with dramatic excitement to her sell. There was too much excitement happening for the psychic to properly gauge the real reaction of the woman to the mention of the supernatural. Phoenix had a feeling that Claudia would have played along either way. It was going to be a fun tour to have someone who could match her energy but was older than twelve. She held her tongue at the woman’s declaration, knowing the other shoe would soon drop once she heard the price. Still, Phoenix felt a bubbling pride at how well she was selling this place.
Phoenix waited with baited breath as Claudia fought with herself about the price. This was the point at which many fathers won out the argument to get back on the road. But there was no one here to persuade Claudia, so it seemed like a good shot. Phoenix took the twenty-dollar bill with a smile and a “Thank you”–but no customary “Are you sure?”
She nodded resolutely. “Yes, ma’am. Follow me.” The tour guide motioned with her arm as she took the lead. They went through a curtain to the beginning of the tour. “First we have the Two-in-One Room, where we see what odd combinations nature, and forces beyond, have concocted.” It a creepy room if people didn’t like dead animals or gross things. Pieces included a jackalope, a capricorn skeleton, a grizzlycorn–a grizzly bear head with a unicorn head on it, a roostdeer–a rooster with deer antlers on it, and a falchion–a falcon with the tail replaced by a long blade.

Claudia followed after the girl, examining the curtain with a wry smile before she passed through. The items on display were certainly intriguing, and Claudia had seen enough in her life that some spliced together species wasn’t going to scare her. The falcon in particular caught her attention and she paused to look at it, an amused smile still on her face. “How did you acquire all this stuff? Did you have to track it down or was it just, like, donated?”

“Some people don’t seem to mind, but there’s some people that don’t care for it,” Mateo said, knowing that was the norm with people who created street art. “It’s pretty amazing though how they can do it overnight,” he added. “They do it fast and pack in so much color and detail. It’s kind of like looking at a puzzle or an I, Spy book.” He took his phone back and shoved it into his pocket. “Judging by the scale of some of these works, I can’t imagine that it’s just one person. It could be a couple. A lot of the great artists from way back in the day had apprentices and other helpers to finish their pieces. So far, it’s only been one piece at a time, so I wonder if there will be two that show up over night at some point. ”
