me rn because when sparrow ben asked luther what was so great about umbrella ben that they all loved him so much luther said it was because he was the best of them and listed positive attributes like kindness and selflessness because luther strives to be recognized for his accomplishments and sparrow ben rolled his eyes because he knew he would never be as loved as umbrella ben in that case but when he asked klaus, who longs for someone to see his flaws and failures and love him anyway, he listed all the ways in which umbrella ben was a pain in his ass but he added that he was just as fucked up as the rest of them and thats why he loved him, and this made sparrow ben realize he might have a chance at redemption becasue he isnt the perfect ben everyone except klaus remembers, but if they loved umbrella ben despite his shortcomings then they might love him too:

If you find Allison's s3 arc and actions disturbing, good, you're supposed to

you're supposed to see someone who's in pain and grieving and lashing out at the people she loves in the darkest point of her life, you're not supposed to agree with what she's doing, but you can see why she'd do, does that justify any of it? no and it's not supposed to

Allison is hurting and she's gone through trauma after trauma (losing her daughter, having no voice for a year in the 60s and facing two years of near constant racism from everyone around her, then losing the one person who held her together throughout all of that being just part of it) and she's breaking down and it's messy and it's terrible. And it's supposed to be. It's supposed to be hard to watch because no one likes looking at trauma when it isn't pretty and forgivable

Again, this isn't to say Allison was in the right for what she did, its to say for a woman who lost everything and more, its pretty understandable why she'd fall apart so terribly

something else i absolutely adore is that, in the scene where viktor is sulking and moping about in ben's room, when ben arrives he mocks him but in doing so he actually talks him out of that state. i read people calling him manipulative for it and i guess it does fall into that grey area but to be honest all i could see there was a glimpse of umbrella!ben, of what he used to do with klaus all the time. he went there because he knew he'd find viktor there, and he knew what viktor would be doing, and he knew which buttons to push to help him snap out of it. he was mean, sure, he couldn't exactly go in there and play bffs, but that wasn't what viktor needed anyway. he needed someone to show him how selfish his reasoning was being, and how much good he could do if he stepped up. he didn't need to be coddled, he needed to wake tf up, and ben found a way to help him. i personally didn't think of this as him manipulating viktor, it just made me soft and it reminded me of the times he was maybe a little too harsh to klaus because he knew that would be the only way to make him listen. ofc umbrella!ben always tried other routes first, but he had another kind of relationship with klaus so it makes sense that sparrow!ben resorted to what fit his character in viktor's eyes.

i read a theory about sparrow!ben being a coward and it being the reason why he was demoted from being number one twice and it does track and it could potentially be that but i personally also think it could be because deep down he does not like using his power that much, or at least not for things that are actually violent (in a non-controlled environment where he actually will be doing irreparable damage).

we do know umbrella!ben hated his power because it was extremely violent and gory and felt more like a villain sort of power than it did a hero, and on top of that it was painful as well. he was in physical pain every time he used it and, adding that on top of emotional scarring, ben really did not have a good time with his power at all.

i think sparrow!ben is, when it comes down to it, always ben. and i think for as much as he likes showing off and being all “oh look i'm so cool my tentacles are so cool they can hold my cigar and also like slap people on the shoulder to make them sit back down haha” when it actually comes down to murdering he sort of shuts down. first of all, that has to take so much more of a toll on his body — in the heat of battle it's easy to forget how taxing their powers are on them, but they are — and i imagine it would be much more painful, but also it /is/ a very gory sort of power and while the sparrow!ben we saw for most of the season didn't really look like one to worry about that kind of thing, we also saw how much of his real character he's actually repressing.

so yeah maybe he is a bit of a coward, also too. but i think it's possibly more than that. and i miss him i want more of him immediately
