Clonetober 2021 - Day 19
Prompt: Coruscant Guard/Stakeout
Title: Sitrep: KUBAR
Content Warnings: none
Word Count: 789
 **********
Rys slumped a little lower in the driver’s seat of the non-descript speeder he and Jek were using for their stakeout. They’d been at it for a few hours now, and Jek had stepped away to get them some caf.
The passenger door opened, and Rys turned to rib his friend for taking his time. Instead, he stared, openmouthed, as a skinny young man, about his own biological age, slid into the seat and closed the door. The kid tucked his hands into the pockets of his jacket and slouched in the seat.
 “First stakeout?” the interloper asked.
“I … uh … Who are you, exactly?” Rys stammered.

Clonetober 2021 - Day 21
Prompt: Clones and Their Jedi/Domestic Bliss
Title: Aliit Ori'shya Tal'din (Family is More than Blood)
Content Warnings: none
Word Count: 1062
 **********
Rex looked up from where he was helping Anakin set out food on a long trestle table.
Fives and Echo were sitting on the grass playing with the twins under Padmé’s watchful eye. Farther afield, Hardcase, Jesse, Tup, and Dogma were setting up a net for games, while Kix supervised.
As Rex watched, a group of clones, following a familiar auburn-haired figure in Jedi robes crested a hill.
 “Oya 501st!” the newcomers shouted.
“Oya 212th!” Rex’s boys hollered back.
Wooley, Longshot, Gearshift, and Gregor immediately challenged Hardcase, Jesse, Tup, and Dogma to a game of volleyball, with Kix refereeing.

Not fully colored because I was trying to get this out for day 31: Remembrance/Rescue. Just playing around with a few things.

Ohs!
Rex decides to set up a fall harvest for the town then loses a child—his child—during it.
Turning, he looks over at his brother. “You ever think we’d be here?”
“On a farm? No.”
“Doesn’t have to be a farm,” Rex responds. “Could be anywhere without the Republic. Or Empire.”
Setting the holonovel on a side table, Cody looks over at him. “Considering I thought you died when the Tribunal went down, this…” He hesitates before clearing his throat. “No. I never thought this would happen. Never thought I’d see you with…a foundling.”

Echo gets a cam - Day 31: Dogma
To celebrate Halloween, the 501st stuck Dogma in an dragon costume, in honor of General Skywalker. Unfortunately, the Holonet's krayt dragon is a lot different from the actual krayt dragon, but a laughing Anakin decided to make it the 501st's mascot. Dogma is upset because the outfit is against regulations.

Day 24 ARC Troopers/Pranks
Read it on AO3
The 501 hadn’t smiled much lately. ARC Troopers Jesse and Fives were on a mission to fix that.
Commander Tano was an integral player in the scheme, they needed her senses, and her closeness to Rex to get themselves into his quarters.
“So.. you just need me to get him out of his quarters?” she looked a little skeptical, as if they were underestimating her with such a simple task.
“Without his armor on, he needs to leave it behind.” Fives added, this wouldn't work if he took their canvas with him.
“At least the breast and back plates.” Jesse corrected, hoping to make the requirement a little easier to manage.
She thought about it for a bit, and then nodded with a grin “OK, let’s do this, what do we need?”
There was a moment of surprise on both their parts before they smiled widely and took the Commander to their shared bunk room to plot the worst idea they’d ever had.
———
“Hey Rex, you feeling up to a spar?” Ahsoka was by far the most level of the three, but she was as bad a liar as Fives, so unfortunately she would have to go actually soar with the Captain instead of helping set up.
“Kinda early for you, kid.” Rex looked a little tired, like he’d been woken up unexpectedly and was just winding down from it.
“Well I figured I wanted to see if I could beat you before you’ve been training all day.” The Commander smiled sweetly, Jesse wondered if a little teasing would really be enough. “Unless you think you’re not tough enough for me, I bet Master Skywalker wou-“
“Hold on, did you just ask me to spar then immediately toss me aside?” Rex’s expression shifted at the suggestion that the General would be better at sparring.
“Well if you don’t think you can keep up-“
“Ohhh no, alright kid let’s go.” He smiled, and, because it was her, left without his armor.
Fives watched from around the corner, the Commander signaled “phase 1 complete phase 2 ago.”
“We gotta move fast, they're good but if Rex suspects a thing he’ll find a way to make it get us instead.” Jesse laughed a little.
The pair slipped into Rex’s room before the door shut completely and got to work.
——
The General had called for a meeting to discuss new strategies for the battalion. As Rex spoke Jesse and Fives stared, Rex was now wearing everything but his helmet, a custom blend of the Phase2 and the Phase1 breastplate and shoulder guards.
Jesse quietly leaned over to him “we must have set the tension too high, it should have gone off when he put it on.”
“Maybe he’s being soft and gentle, yeah of course we set it too high, Jess.” Fives teased at him, “let’s just hope we can get back to it before he gets hurt and it-“
“Thank you Rex.” The General reached up and firmly patted Rex’s shoulder and time froze in Fives’ chest.
There were three distinct popping noises as small clouds of shiny pink glitter broke free from hidden pouches inside the back of his armor.
A long moment of stunned silence, the General, and the Captain now covered in the silvery stuff.
Jesse looked over and saw most of his vod we’re trying to hide the smiles that teased their lips, but he let himself laugh. Harder and harder and the others followed suit.
They hadn’t meant to also get the General, but it had happened in front of everyone. And even Rex was laughing at the sight of Skywalker black tunic sprinkled in the glitter.
“Glad I left my helmet behind.” He managed, eyes fixed now on Fives and Jesse, somehow he knew already?? “ARC Troopers! You two will be cleaning this mess up for the rest of the war. Was it worth it?”
He didn’t look so intimidating when he smiled so widely.
Fives and Jesse looked around at the room, every brother was laughing or taking pictures, smiling and looking happy again.
They looked at one another, nodded and spoke in unison. “Yessir!”

…When you start writing a 3k fic for shameless self-indulgence – and in the end you get a fic for shameless self-indulgence… but that’s 21k.
(I don’t regret anything)
The story of the Crosshair’s chip has its roots in the not-so-distant childhood on Kamino. But most importantly – it continues after the discouraging events of the first season of The Bad Batch.
I damn much wanted to write this fix-it and here it is: feelings and conversations, growing up and unexpected appearances. Finding a family. Hope for a galaxy far, far away.

Always the First
They’re gone.
He knows. He knew, rather - no one had to tell him. His brothers didn’t find him, and something broke inside him, a piece of his heart disappearing into an unknown kind of black. It was clean, crisply breaking one thing from another, a decisive crack that snapped all the way to his bones.
His brothers didn’t find him.
If his brothers didn’t find him, it meant that there was no one left.
The crew of pirates leaves him be, lets him obsess. He slices into long-forgotten databases, finds old records and old articles, dredging up answers along with the uneasy spectres of the past. For a while, the only company he keeps are ghosts.
The pirates do not protest when he insists on somewhere halfway across the galaxy, a moon so insignificant it’s never even had a name. But they take him.
When they get there, he steps off of the ship without them.
The ruins of the Venator stretch in front of him, a memory half buried in a vast expanse of twisted metal. It is scored with scars and burn marks. Its bridge, shattered, reaches palely for the sky. Its bay doors lie half open, broken, a secret that exploded before it would be kept. The wind whispers around it, cutting into his skin until it prickles. His hair stands on end, and he shivers. He did not bring a coat with him, only the thin tunic the pirates gave him. He misses his old clothes.
It snowed here, at some point. The ground is damp, but it’s firm when he walks across the dirt. Patches of melting snow dot the landscape, quietly turning to water and soaking back into the earth. He wonders if it takes comfort in its subtle cycle, moving on until the stars die. If it has seen nothing but the change of the seasons, or if it was here for the day the Venator crashed and the world burned to the ground.
He walks across the earth, and every step hurts.
He sinks to his knees, and reaches out his hands, and his bare fingertips brush across the surface of a life lost.
It is the first, ahead of the lost legion, like the soldier he always was.
The plastoid is cracked. The paint has faded, an echo. But it is still there - the stray brushstroke, the place where he put a little too much on and laughed, smudging his finger in the excess and dabbing it cheerfully onto the other’s face. Blue, flashbacks of long-ago yesterdays and memories and homes, outlining the place where his eyes used to be.
The cog sits on his forehead, just like it always did, a pledge and a promise to the first thing that gave him a purpose.
But all Kix can see is the wheel that stopped turning.
Jesse’s helmet is still intact, smeared with grime-filled scrapes from the day he left it behind. The plastoid is cold, so light it could dissolve in his palms and never know the difference. It is just a shell, just a shell, its memories stolen with its warmth, lying empty on a nameless moon without him.
Something in Kix is broken, beyond repair.
Jesse’s ghost whispers in the wind, wrapping itself around him until he can’t feel anything but the ache.
His hands are warm and he grins, so bright it hurts to look at, and his head tips with mischief. He bothers him while he’s supposed to be working. He produces half-crushed ration bars after battles and groans when someone tells jokes worse than his and says something so sarcastically he can’t help but laugh. His arms are the only place that ever felt safe; he builds them a home from his body. The world is in his heartbeat, a promise never leaving, never gone, by your side. He never said the word until, implied always instead like there was a dream they could find the answers to one day.
He taps his bucket against Kix’s and says something they can both recite by heart and runs off to be brave, and Kix turns to the lines of injured brothers and tries to be strong.
Jesse was the first, always the first, always a soldier. He never got the chance to be anything else.
And Kix, left behind, is the last.
*******
That little noise I just made was my heart getting stepped on.
This didn't, admittedly, turn out the way I hoped it would. Translating emotions to words has always been one of the hardest parts of writing for me - and some things go too deep to describe.
Happy Halloween, y'all, and a very bittersweet ending to this year's Clonetober. I want to thank you all so much. You being here has meant the world to me over the past month - every time someone leaves me a headcanon or a piece of feedback or says "hey, this is really good!" it's made my day. Truly, writing for the best boys over the past month has been a stunning experience.
I don't know what my page is going to look like from here on out - of course, I plan on continuing to write these little pieces! But taking this in a new direction is something I'm honestly nervous about. Let me know what you want to see from me - pop in to leave me a request or a prompt, a general comment, or to just say hi! I appreciate words in all forms. I'll try to put out a survey or something in a few days, and we'll take it from there.
Finally, a huge thank you to @clonetober for organizing and running this whole event. This was a joy to participate in, and the works that other artists have contributed are fabulous beyond words. Thank you for this event, for the wonderful prompts, and for all of the very hard work you've put in to make this thing happen.
I'll see you all next month.

Holding, Still
“Hold still.”
The words were an admonishment, but the voice was gentle. There was a broad pull at the back of Tup’s skull. His scalp tingled, and careful fingers tilted his head back until his eyes angled towards the ceiling. Echo drew another section of hair to the side, and Tup stiffened his muscles while he twisted it into place.
It was early morning. His joints were stiff and reluctant, and he was still wiping sleep out of his eyes. But the lights in the barracks were brightening, and the rest of the legion were dragging themselves gradually from slumber. A low, subtle hum whispered over the walls, beginning to charge with energy as trails of footsteps became more and more frequent.
Echo’s hands brushed through Tup’s hair again, and a shiver raced up his spine.
There was a reason for this, Dale had said once, while he was in the middle of studying for the medic exams. There were more nerve endings in your scalp. He’d rubbed his eyes and said something about oxytocin and the endocrine system and glands with funny names, and then he’d buried his nose back in his holobooks. Tup couldn’t even remember what they had been talking about - just what it felt like when he wasn’t there anymore.
Fives snorted, and Tup’s hair twisted again when Echo turned to give him a dirty look that Tup was too immobilized to see.
“Never thought I’d see the day,” Fives teased, voice low.
Echo wove another section into Tup’s hair, with a shrug that pulled slightly on the shiny’s scalp. “We all make sacrifices.”
“Really. Do we, Tup?”
Was there a response to that?
Tup settled for a shrug, mirroring Echo’s.
“Hold still,” Echo said again, but his voice softened. An elastic snapped behind Tup’s head, and the deft, gentle fingers retreated.
Fives whistled, appreciatively. “We’ll have to take a holo of that one.”
Tup raised his eyebrows and reached back, fumbling for whatever Echo had done to his skull. It was tight, nearly tight enough to ache. But Echo had pulled the braids slightly looser again, as if he knew. The bun was flat enough to fit under his helmet. He'd tied it with one of those stretchy little fabric ties.
“I thought the loth-cats were fitting,” Echo said, and he was smiling his secret smile. “Adorable, but clever. And mischievous.”
Fives wrapped his arms around them both, laughing into Tup’s ear. “Just like you.”
Out of the corner of his eye, Fives was grinning. Widely, but hazy around the edges, like he’d been about to crack a joke and had forgotten it halfway through. His face was soft, almost mesmerized, humor melting into something so tender it was almost aching.
On Tup’s other side, Echo’s eyes shone, and he reached over to tuck a stray strand of Tup’s hair behind his ear.
Tup could have cried.
He almost did, when Hardcase bounded over with a cam.
In the end, Tup kept the holopic next to his hairbrush, next to the collection of cheap fabric hair ties, hidden but impossible to miss. Echo and Fives beamed, in sync as always, their heads tilted towards one another. But they nested Tup between them, their arms around his shoulders, holding him close.
They looked proud.
*******
Rejected line: They built him a home, with their bodies, with their beings, exactly his size.
I liked that line, okay, and I couldn't quite make it fit the way I wanted to.
That seemed to be a recurring theme with this one. It was surprisingly difficult to write - I can picture it in my mind, but it doesn't quite translate to words the way I was hoping it would. Nevertheless, I like this one.
I imagine this to be a little while after this moment that I wrote a while back. In summary, every morning, Echo and Fives do Tup's hair for him. It becomes a routine (thank you so much @clonetober for today's prompt!). Tup is still a shiny, and very shortly after he arrived on the Resolute those two adopted him. He had no choice in the matter.
But Echo and Fives are great parents.
