Hey, you. Yes, you. If you’ve been in a tough spot and thought “If so-and-so were here right now they’d be so much better at this. They’d have figured this out already. I am not good enough to figure out how to fix this or figure my way out.” STOP beating yourself up! It is so American to think that every issue has a resolution. That every person and situation can be figured out if you just have the right technique, or the right words, or the perfect body, or the best personality or someone who is somehow more perfect and better than you at the thing. It is so American to believe that when something doesn’t work out we must blame ourselves because every situation obviously can be solved. That’s. Not. True. Sometimes a situation is just exactly what it is, impossible. There is no magic bullet that’s going to make things better. Even if you were the fastest, strongest, happiest, funniest, sexiest, hardest working person, sometimes you’ll still lose. Some toxic people will never adjust. Some narcissists will never acknowledge or respect your boundaries. Some inflexible people will never recognize their own biases or how to learn and grow as people in the way that we need them to.  We have to stick to our boundaries and let toxic people go, and we have to accept that some situations will have an outcome that is different than we want. Let go of the outcome. Follow through and resist the urge to judge yourself. As the great prophet Captain Picard once said: “It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life.”
