Josephine took the wand with a smile and a nod, placing it on the desk in front of her as she took notes on her computer. “Perhaps, but learning a new face is never dull.” she said, looking up with a grin and taking measurements of the wand. “Any particular reason you moved here? Or did you just want to shake things up?”
Tumblr media
“Depends on the face,” Em joked with a soft laugh. “England was my parent’s home, and I moved to Fance quite young, since my husband passed I thought it’d be good to... Come here and get to know another part of myself. Plus, I hear there’s a new Minister to be picked and I’d love to put my backing towards one of them. A pity no woman is running.”

With a small nod of her head, she placed an elbow on the table, letting her head rest in the palm of her hand. She regarded her vistor. “I see,” she replied quietly, with enquisitive eyes. She noticed the subtle shift in mood reflected in Em’s eyes. “I’m sorry for you loss,” she said, taking a guess at what had happened. Her use of language surrounding her husband, as if he was past tense, and the fact she had reacted, no matter how minutely, to his mention. “Well, father always enjoys feeling helpful,” she said. That wasn’t a lie. He did enjoy being helpful, so long as it held him in an elevated position, a position of power. He was a Rowle after all, they enjoyed the world being at their fingertips. “Was he helpful?” she asked with an amused smile.
Thea shrugged ever so slightly. “Why do you find yourself in England?” she asked. That was a start.
Tumblr media
Just like she’d felt the first time she walked into the Rowle home, Em could feel Thea’s eyes over her. Judging. Trying to figure her out, what was useful and what wasn’t. It seemed the apple didn’t fall far from the free, though she was sure Thea was much better than the people she used to know. “I can’t complain, he helped me connect with good people to get a home for myself and establish myself with a job. For a price, but what in this life is free? I don’t mind giving back when I get good alliances from it.” And of course, as a Rowle, she could claim everything he owned as hers due to seniority, it was better for him to keep her pleased. Not that Thea needed to know that.
“My parents were born here, but I hardly got to know it before we moved to France... After my husband passed I just felt I didn’t fit there anymore, so...” she motioned around them. “New beginnings. Do you like it here?”

Bellatrix needed more resources. More influence to win Rodolphus as Minister. She needed more to back her. Word of a powerful witch entering England had drifted her way. One with plenty of money and influence to match. Bella didn’t hesitate to reach out. Sending one of her followers to go in search of her and extend on invitation of sorts. An invitation to have a meeting with her. While she knew that the offer could have been turned down, she was positive it wouldn’t be. After all, she was one of the most powerful witches in England and power recognized power.
As she added the final touches to herself, Kreacher came to announce that their guest had arrived. Bella gave a nod, instructing him to lead her to the waiting room. Taking a deep breath, she waited five minutes before making her entrance. “Miss Cardion,” she said extending a hand, “What a pleasure to finally meet you.”
Tumblr media
When the door opened, Em turned to see the beautiful Miss Black she’d heard so much about. Indeed, she looked just like all Black’s did, with sharp features, dark hair, and eyes just the same but with that edge of poison that was deadly. Bellatrix walked with confidence, and Em met her just the same, walking towards her and extending her free hand to shake Bella’s. “Pleasure is all mine, Miss Black, you’re as lovely as people say,” Em said with a smile, dropping her hand and taking a drink from her glass. “Can I serve you a Scotch as well? I hope you don’t mind I helped myself to a glass. It’s always nice to relax, especially when business is going to be discussed. I’m glad it’s being left to the women this time around.”

Emmeline smiled warmly, bringing her own drink to her lips and finishing it off. Her new companion was drawing the eyes of a number of other patrons, much to Emmeline’s satisfaction. She loved surrounding herself with beautiful people.
“Only the arrogant ones. I pride myself in making sure men know that I’m better than them,” she told Em, grinning faintly. “You must be new around here…I don’t recall ever having seen you before and I definitely would have remembered you.”
Tumblr media
“Ah well, then you’re very wise to know so and make sure others do too,” she said with a warm smile that matched Emm’s, leaning forward on her elbow. “Well I’ll hold you to your word so you remember me next time we meet. I just arrived, I’ve been living in France for as long as I can remember, my husband died a few years ago and I thought it was time for... A change,” she said looking around before her eyes zoned in on Emm once more. “So I guess yes, quite new here.”

A brow quirked. It seemed this woman knew who she was, but Thea didn’t know who she was. How rare an occasion for Thea. Of course, there were plenty of strangers in the world. People you’d never met before, who hadn’t met you. But more often than not, they knew nothing of you before meeting. They were as unaware of you as you were of them. Mostly. Of course, there was the other side of things, where Thea usually knew someone before they knew her. She experienced that often enough, especially when a name dropped into her hand to observe, to extract information from, to kill. But to be known of, which no prior knowledge. No she didnt’ like that at all. Of course, a name and explanation were give to her. She sat a little straighter, rolling back her shoulders, her head inclinging to the right ever so slightly. “I see,” she replied simply. “And how was your meeting with Thanatos Rowle?” she asked with a quirk of her lips. Her father was a formidable man; somehow enirely intimidating but also approachable. He had a silver tongue, which was probably where she and her sister got it. An assassin turned politician.
“Well, if that’s what he’s told you, I can hardly complain,” she admitted, crossing her legs. “I’ve heard nothing of you, so if you’d dilvulge me, perhaps some information about yourself?” she asked.
Tumblr media
“Just brief, once when he was visiting France, he knew my husband, when he lived,” she said with a half-smile, grief passing over her eyes for a moment before she cleared her throat. She couldn’t be stuck in the past, it didn’t make sense when she had so many other things yet to accomplish. “He was kind enough to give me some tips for my time here in England.”  “Information on myself? Well, there’s a lot, what would you like to know?” she asked, tilting her head ever so slightly, curious about this young woman in front of her who looked ready to do anything she needed to get what she wanted. A good thing to be, in Em’s mind.

Perhaps it was because she was already one mojito deep or perhaps she was feeling grateful to the woman for getting rid of the man, but Emmeline smiled and actually shook her hand. “Well what a coincidence,” Emmeline hummed, “I’m Emm too.”
Emlia Cardion…she wracked her brain to find some trace of the name, but came up with nothing. She made a mental note to find out what she could about the woman.
“I’ll take another mojito and put whatever she orders on the Vance tab,” she told the bartender.
Tumblr media
“Well it’s a pleasure to meet you, Emm,” she said with a laugh. What were the chances they’d have the same nickname. The woman had a lovely smile, and even prettier eyes, it was quite the sight, if Em was honest. She bowed her head slightly in thank you regarding the drink. “I’ll have a Cosmo, thank you,” she said and the bartender walked away. Turning back to the woman before her, she smiled. “I imagine you have to deal with that often, men coming up to you, you’re very beautiful.”

Josephine looked up at the sound of her name, ready with a warm smile. “Yes, that’s me. You must be… Emlia Cardion?” she asked, looking over her paperwork. “It shouldn’t take too long, more of a formality than anything else.”
Tumblr media
“That’s me,” she said with a nod, walking in further to the room and taking out her wand, offering it to the woman in front of her. “It’s alright, I don’t mind,” she said taking a seat. “I imagine this must be quite boring though, compared to other duties I’m sure you’re given.”

Em followed the small house elf called Kreacher down the halls of the Black estate to where her meeting had been laid out with a certain Bellatrix Black. Word was that she was considered one of the most powerful witches in England along with a rumored purist if gossip was to be believed. Gossip that Em easily believed if she knew anything about the Blacks and their hobby of blowing ‘fallen Blacks’ off their family tree. Oh, that tree must have been enormous by now. She was taken to a study, one for guests she assumed, to wait for Bellatrix to come and greet her, and so she walked to the nearby table to serve herself some scotch while she waited.

COFFEE AND CONFLICT | OPEN
Monday fucking morning.
His fingers tapped to an unmelodious beat attempting to drown out the bubbles and hiss of the machines, the incessant chatter of overexcitable people, and the tired aura that sagged on his shoulders, making it’s presence very well known. Seven. Six. Five. Still a good handful of people in front of him, all up so damn early to get a cup of coffee. Vicious thoughts of ripping his way through the crowd crossed his mind but he left them simply as a daydream, untouched by his unholy desires.
An individual stood out like an exclamation mark, wobbling their way through the crowd — as if they were an asteroid struggling through the orbit of larger planets — stopped right in front of him, gracefully swooping into his spot in the line.
UNBELIEVABLE.
Something a lot like anger dug into his arteries and suddenly, the taste of vexation coated his tongue. He found himself moving forward, making his presence to the thief, his hand brushing against their forearm. He ignored the thudding veins exploding in his palm.
“How dare you? Would you mind me asking you what the bloody fuck you’re doing? Please, humour me, I’d love to hear why you have the right to so eloquently cut in line like you bloody damn own the place.” He shook his head, disbelief spluttering from his stony gaze. “Abso- unbelievable.”
Tumblr media
Something Em did not miss from England was how crowded it was and how the service was... Slower, really. When she stepped into the coffee shop, she could hardly see the menu, and with a frustrated sigh, she began weaving her way through the crowd to be able to read to even know what she would order.  She was missing something to give her energy, something to make this morning more bearable. There were a lot of people to talk to and that night she had to meet with the woman they called Helena Rosier to see what her stance on the whole Minister business was. Rosier, a name she hadn’t used or heard in a long time. Finally, she reached a place she could read from, unconsciously stepping in front of someone as she began to mumble the menu items under her breath. She felt a hand touch her forearm, and she stepped slightly assuming someone was seeking a way to pass behind her only for a voice to boom beside her. Turning, she opened her mouth to ask what was the matter only for the man to begin cursing, her eyebrows raising in disbelief at how loud and rude someone she didn’t know could be. “First of all, yes I do mind you asking and moreover accusing me, and secondly, I just came up to read the board, not cut in line, but since you’ve been so rude it wouldn’t be bad for you to offer me a spot here, don’t you think? Or is that just how you speak to women?”

The bar was not Emmeline’s first place of preference (her own had been recently overrun by Ministry drudges), but the place did serve a decent mojito. The occupants, however, were well below par, as she had come to realize by the man that thought he stood a chance at talking to her.
As she was about to snap at the man, it wasn’t his face that filled her vision, but instead a woman. Emmeline fought the smirk that began to tug at her lips when the other woman spoke, but she dutifully played her part, cocking her brow and meeting the gaze of the man with boredom.
“Bitch is better than what I expected from the likes of him,” Emmeline remarked, tilting her head as she turned to meet the other woman. “These ones are worse than the usual,” she gave a quiet laugh.
“Come and sit. After all that, I certainly owe my wife a drink or two,” she told the other, smirking and gesturing to the seat beside.
Tumblr media
“Still, you’d think they could get more clever,” she said, shaking her head as she sat down in the seat the woman gestured, laughing at her offer of a drink for her wife.  “A drink or two? Well now you’re just spoiling me,” Em said with a grin, offering her hand to the woman in front of her. “Emlia Cardion, it’s a pleasure, considering we’re married and all. Though, I suppose you can call me just Em, or Emma, or love if we’re being particularly sweet,” she joked waving the bartender over.

She’s hardly been here a day and she was already witnessing a man try over and over to talk to a woman at the bar who clearly looked like she didn’t want to be bothered. Also, mildly like she might hex him into next week. With an annoyed sigh, Em stood up and walked over to the woman, placing an arm behind her on the bar and smiling. “Hi, love, I hope I didn’t leave you waiting,” she said before turning to the man, “And you are?” “Oh... Shit are you...” he trailed off pointing from Em to the woman. “Are we what? Lovers? Please, this is my wife, have some respect,” she said with a frown. “Now how about you run along before you hurt yourself.” “Fuck, fine, sour bitch,” the man said as he pushed off and left. Letting out a nearly amused scoff, Em stepped back, looking at the woman in front of her. “Men, am I right? Horrid creatures. Handsome sometimes, but what a pain.”

“Josephine Flint?” Em asked as she entered the office of Magical Law Enforcement. It’d been a long day already, traveling and settling in, and all Em wanted to do was to get back home for the day. “I believe I was told to find you to get my wand registered for England, I just arrived from France. I do hope it’s you I was meant to find.”

Em walked into the fancy restaurant feeling strangely out of place. Years in Canada as a theater actress tended to make her forget how different Pureblood society was, and how shallow it could be. Still, she was dressed for the occasion, wild curls tied neatly, and a dark green silk dress with a slit that would have made her father faint. She’d agreed to the meeting hesitantly after meeting Severus Snape who assured her that despite Rodolphus’s perceived purist beliefs that he was welcoming to others, including Mister Snape—a half-blooded man who ran Rodolphus’s campaign for Minister. “Mr. Lestrange?” she asked the waiter who nodded and walked her to the table where indeed a powerful man sat, looking every inch as rich and handsome as she knew Pureblooded men were. Still, beauty was only skin deep, and she hardly fell for pretty faces anymore. “Rodolphus Lestrange, yes?” she asked as she neared the table, raising an eyebrow. “I believe your campaign manager wanted us to meet,” she said offering her hand. “Pleasure to meet you.”

It was a sunny day, much too nice to be cooped up in the Ministry and one advantage of working in an underrated office was that it was easy to tell their boss the WiFi was playing up again and they would finish the day’s work off elsewhere. Anybody could still contact Eden via phone, so they took their laptop and set up a hotspot in a park. They had a few reliable accounts they always kept half an eye on during work, as it was often important to respond quickly to suggestions of magic leaking via the Internet and it was part of Eden’s job to ensure the International Statute of Secrecy was maintained but today it was hard to find anything beyond the constant discourse about Peter Pettigrew. “Honestly,” they muttered aloud as they sent a message to one Twitter user reminding them that having a public account and explicitly mentioning Killing Curses was a fineable offence. “Is nobody talking about anything else?” People were perfectly happy to shout their condemnation for the man and yet how many of them seemed to think a death threat wasn’t out of line? Violence never solved a thing, even violence in the name of so-called justice.
They jumped when a shadow fell over them and looked up at the newcomer. “I’m so sorry, did you want to sit?” Hastily they moved the rucksack and coffee cup that they had placed on the space beside them on the bench.
Tumblr media
It’s been so long since Em had been in London, in fact long enough that she didn’t even know it anymore. It was strange, like an echo of a life that wasn’t hers, and yet walking through the grass and open space near the Ministry made her yearn for those years she ran freely across it while her father worked in the large scary rooms in the Ministry. She was so lost in her own memories she didn’t notice the woman she was looming over until she spoke. “Oh! Oh no, sorry,” she said looking down at the person that sat on the bench. “I didn’t mean to scare, I was just looking all over, it’s been a long time since I was here, please no need to move your things, I’m sure you’re busy at work.”

“Mm?” she made a questioning noise, looking up from the newspaper which had been haphazardly placed on the table. With a brow arched, she turned inquisitive eyes towards the person who had spoken to her. She stared for a moment. “You’re going to have to repeat yourself, I wasn’t listening,” she uttered simply. Thea knew how to act around people; she knew how to interact with others. Despite going to school elsewhere, despite training in South America. Despite being much more used to her own company, she’d still been raised in pureblood society. Being a Rowle meant she had all the fundamentals of the other sacred twenty-eight families. However, she wasn’t as apt at it as her sister. Astraea was the starlight to Theseus’ night sky.
Her eyes fell back down to the newspaper. She exhaled. “Whoever liaises with these people needs to be fired,” she uttered.
Tumblr media
“I said it’s a pleasure, Miss Rowle,” Em said as she smiled to the other woman, tilting her head curiously. She seemed intense, the way most Rowle were from what little she remembered of them. “I’m Em Cardion, I met your father a while ago, I thought it’d be nice to meet you after what he said about you. I am quite fond of strong women, we need more in this world if you ask me,” she said taking a seat in front of Thea.
