Today I'm thinking about how blaming yourself for every relationship problem is also a way of feeling in control. Like, if everything that goes wrong is her fault, then she's the one with the power to fix it. It's a comfortable thought. But ylm sounds like the slow realization that she's actually trying her best and still not powerful enough to save the relationship, because it's not actually on her. I think that realization can feel very vulnerable and scary but also freeing at the same time

im sure she was blaming herself for their conflicts to some extent & then the rose coloured glasses came off but i wonder if the things that were explicitly his fault also didn't get put in there because she wanted to protect him & you can't really air your laundry to the whole world when youre with them

we talked about this a TON last year and i agree completely. i also think that he demanded (this sounds harsh but i don't mean it that way) that she deal with her stuff. and she DID! and putting in the work helped immensely! she got well, she figured out there was a better way to be a partner, she learned and grew and healed. it doesn't really seem like he did that same level of heavy lifting, and i think once she realized that, it stung to a degree that maybe created a point of no return.

and this is so delicate because it isn't really a fault thing, per se? i don't think, at least for awhile, that he was expressly blaming her as much as passively not stopping her from blaming herself. and i know he also had stuff going on that probably made it harder for him, which i respect and can't criticize. but god it must feel bad when you're just trying and trying and finally you realize your efforts have paid off, but at what cost?
