Neo-paganism & The Human Person | The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
Neo-paganism & The Human Person | The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
I’ve noticed a revival of pagan ideas and rituals that have caught on in numerous movements. The climate movement, racial movements (on both the right and the left), and other ostensibly secular movements have neo-pagan elements. In order to discuss this, I want to offer a definition for neo-paganism. I’d define neo-paganism is an explicit or implicit belief that misattributes spiritual…

Postmodernism & The Human Person | The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
Postmodernism & The Human Person | The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
The postmodernist movement is a reaction to the ideas of the enlightenment, often referred to as modernity. Basically, it developed in the mid 20th century, largely due to the developments of the 19th and early 20th century. Here’s what Wikipedia has to say about Postmodernism. Merits of Postmodernism While postmodernist thought is far from perfect, it does raise good points. Here are a few…

Scientism & The Human Person | The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
Scientism & The Human Person | The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
According to Wikipedia, “Scientism is the promotion of science as the best or only objective means by which society should determine normative and epistemological values. While the term was originally defined to mean “methods and attitudes typical of or attributed to the natural scientist”, some religious scholars (and subsequently many others) adopted it as a pejorative with the meaning “an…

Materialism & The Human Person | The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
New episode! Learn what materialism is and how it falls short as a philosophy. Materialism & The Human Person | The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly A thread ⬇️
According to Wikepedia, “Materialism is a form of philosophical monism that holds that matter is the fundamental substance in nature, and that all things, including mental states and consciousness, are results of material interactions. According to philosophical materialism, mind and consciousness are by-products or epiphenomena of material processes (such as the biochemistry of the human…

Naturalism & The Human Person | The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
Naturalism has valid concerns and some major errors. In this podcast, I discuss where naturalists go right and where they go wrong. Naturalism & The Human Person | The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly A thread ⬇️
According to Wikipedia, Naturalism is “the idea or belief that only natural laws and forces (as opposed to supernatural or spiritual ones) operate in the universe. Adherents of naturalism assert that natural laws are the only rules that govern the structure and behavior of the natural world, and that the changing universe is at every stage a product of these laws.” In this episode, I’ll take a…

The Golden Mean for Understanding Objective and Subjective Reality
Today, I continue my deep dive into objective reality and subjective experience by looking at the excesses and defects of how our culture understands them: The Golden Mean for Understanding Objective and Subjective Reality
I’ve discussed the Golden Mean a number of times on the podcast and in various ways. Today, I want to reiterate what the Mean is and how we use practical wisdom to seek it. But, I’ll be discussing that in reference to objective and subjective reality. Where are the excesses and defects in our understandings of these two ideas? That’s what I’ll dive into today. Here are some of the excesses and…

Is Patriotism Good? | Reflections on the 4th of July
In honor of the 4th of July, I want to discuss American Independence and what we can learn about patriotism from our founding. How to Understand Patriotism | Reflections on the 4th of July (Thread)
Today, I’d like to take a break from the series I’ve been rolling out to discuss patriotism in honor of Independence Day. We should always be grateful for our country and what it affords us, but I think the 4th of July is a great time to stop and reflect on that more deeply. So, I want to look at this topic generally, but also specifically in regards to my love of my country and my…

Culture of Extremes and the Root of the Political Division
These are the extremes in our culture that tear us apart - and they go way deeper than #politics Culture of Extremes and the Root of the Political Division
The political division in our country is not as extreme as many other divisions, even though that’s the one we focus on. America is full of stark divisions in worldviews: religious and irreligious, relativism and scientism, naturalism and spiritualism. Despite these obvious and far more important divides, we focus on our political ones. Politics is just the surface of what we believe. The axioms…

Unity of Subject and Object
In today's episode, I want to talk more about the marriage of object and subject in the human person, and what that means.
In today’s episode, I want to talk more about the marriage of object and subject in the human person, and what that means. We are Body & Soul Composites We experience the objective world and we have a subjective lens. In order to understand that, we must remember what I discussed in the last two episodes on objective reality and our subjective experience. We have bodies that are objects in the…

What is Subjective Reality?
What is Subjective Reality? Part 2 of my exploration of reality, experience, and how our culture gets it so wrong.
Last week, I discussed objective reality and why we can trust our intuitions that the world around us is there. And, we can come to know things about the world, even if limited. Today, I want to discuss subjective reality, or personal experience. This will help us see why just looking at the world outside doesn’t work for us as people. Before I get into subjective vs objective, I want to also…

The Death of Socrates And What It Teaches Us Of Courage and Nobility
Here's what I think we can learn from the Death of #Socrates as it's described by #Plato in the Euthyphro, Apology, Phaedo, and Crito.
In his description of the imprisonment and death of Socrates, Plato gives us a look at who he was. In many of Plato’s other works, Socrates is more of a character in the dialogue. However, in Euthyphro, Apology, and Crito, we see him for the man he was – his commitment to being virtuous in the most dire of circumstances Euthyphro, Apology, and Crito These three works detail the conversations of…

What is Objective Reality?
What is Objective Reality? Today, I dive into a defense of objective truth.
A major problem I see in our society is that we’ve divorced objective reality and subjective experience. Instead of recognizing the world around us as it is and trying to relate to it, we do one of two things. We either fall into a Newtonian idea that we’re determined and only science is real, or we rebel against this idea and recognize only our subjective experience. I want to tackle this…

You're Not A Monk | Unexpected Advice From a Priest
I went to confession last week, and the priest blurted out "You're not a monk," as I made my confession. After spending some time this weekend meditating on it, here are some thoughts:
“You’re not a monk.” That was the reaction I got from a priest as I confessed that I’d slipped in my prayer life. And it struck me. He pointed out that my duty is not to spend X amount of time in prayer, but to be a good husband. That comes first, and my prayer life should aid me in that endeavor. This happened within a day or two of listening to Catholic Stuff You Should Know’s episode titled…

Suffering For The Truth & The Importance Of Integrity
Suffering For The Truth & The Importance Of Integrity
The importance of integrity cannot be overstated. If we want to be good, honest people, we have to act out of integrity. We must find a way to uphold our beliefs and act in accord with what we claim to be true. That’s what I discuss below in today’s episode, so listen here to learn more: Get your copy of Thoreau’s Civil Disobedience here >> “Any man more right than his neighbors constitutes a…
