Safety
Right, hereās just a little something about personal safety if approached by strangers. Iāll be the first to tell you that most of the strangers you come across day-to-day will be perfectly nice, kind and friendly. Every now and then, however, thereās going to one who just isnāt.
So, letās go over the basics that every one already knows:
Donāt get into any vehicle with someone you donāt know ā and if they even bother with the line āIāve told you my name, weāre not strangers now,ā feel free to roll your eyes before walking away.
Donāt accept drinks from people you donāt know.
When youāre out, donāt leave your drink unattendedā¦and if you do, donāt drink it when you return to your table. Get a fresh one.
Donāt wander through empty or concealed areas while out walking (weāre talking alleys, parks, railways or abandoned housing).
Oh, and the most common one from the USA: āDonāt be takinā candy from no strangersā.
Thereās a few things, though, that people donāt always tell you:
Donāt walk with your head down. It gives the impression that youāre cowed; of vulnerability and it communicates to other people that youāre scared. Try to keep your head raised enough that you can scan the horizon for any oncoming issues.
If you think someoneās following you, donāt give in to the urge to peek quickly over your shoulder. Actually turn around and give them a good look; it gives you more details about them and gives them the message that youāre not afraid.
Donāt give out personal details.
Seriously. Youād be amazed at the number of people who think nothing of asking a stranger if they live alone. As far as any stranger is concerned, you have at least one roommate.
Make sure your answering machine or voicemail message is recorded by a male (human or robot, it matters not).
If your home has a secure door entry always make sure it closes behind you, whether youāre coming in or going out. Take the extra second to ensure itās secure.
Keep your spare change in a separate pocket. If you decide to give money to someone in the street, do not open your purse/wallet in front of them.

wait i just realised how lovely it is that we have paintings and poetry and sculpture from hundreds of years ago and we relate??? to them??? these things were made so deeply personal and connected to our species' core experiences that even HUNDREDS of years later, with parts of the world unrecognisable, we can look at art and go "that's me! i know how you're feeling!!"
