odo grunts; to those who catch on, it's a laugh. ❝ to put it lightly, ❞ he agrees. ❝ they were a small, separated faction that existed long ago. now they're overrun with many who once supported the founder and chose to leave the great link at the end of the war. not legally, ❞ odo adds, firm. ❝ they were meant to stand trial along with the rest of the link, but they refuse to recognize the authority of the federation. when i say refuse, what i really mean, of course, is vengeance. they don't see other life forms as you and i do. they see only threats, and resources to be controlled. they're afraid, captain. they believe beyond the shadow of a doubt that the more we choose to cooperate the closer we move toward our imminent extermination. ❞
a faint line creases odo's brow. he blinks and looks away for a moment. ❝ i will not hide the truth from you: the number of dissidents is growing daily, and at an alarming rate. some of them are not even that extreme, only severely unaccustomed to change or misinformed and driven to action. it has been my unfortunate experience that once the great link at large reaches a conclusion, individuals tend to fall quickly in line. i am doing all i can to stop it, but they still... don't see me as one of their own. they still don't trust me, for the most part. few of them truly do. ❞
in another life, in another time – this might have been easier, a conversation had on behalf of other men, wiser men. in their place, liam shaw remains, the lingering fragment of grease and spare parts.
❝  right ...  ❞  skepticism does little for anyone, let alone a man of his rank. but there's no set of rules for this kind of thing. official briefings, well, only get someone so far, sure. and after? what then?
lids narrow, reducing the captain's eyes to dark holes of contemplation. ❝  and why is that? exactly?  ❞ a beat, a twitch of his mouth. ❝  don't tell me – bad p.r.?  ❞

[ James .
Tumblr media
I just want to exist. He gets that. It’s a simple statement, but one that resonates, for some reason. ❝ Aye, I know what you mean. ❞ He shrugs. It’s bizarre how they’ve now found themselves in agreement after having just squabbled like a couple of feral cats. This is probably the most genuinely civilized conversation James has had with anyone in months. No fake smiles and laughs for interviewers that get on his last nerve, no confrontations with bandmates and no bullshiting to get girls to sleep with him. He’d almost forgotten what this is like.
❝ Sometimes it’s better not to find out the truth. ❞ He mumbles, suddenly fiddling with the button on his jacket that looks like it’s about to fall off. If he recalls correctly, it was from a few nights ago in Germany when a crowd of fans had mobbed him, grabbing at his clothes, his hair, his limbs, as if they all wanted a pound of flesh. As if he wasn’t human. He doesn’t feel that way so much these days. ❝ Sometimes, I think, secrets are best left to be secrets. What is it they say? Ignorance is bliss. ❞
Tumblr media
Odo bobs his head gently, still staring, intent, at James, with his fingers interlocked. Then his gaze falls.
He thinks about the Occupation. He thinks about his role at the time. He thinks about Kira, and Cardassia, and Bajor, and the unimaginable loss, betrayal, and devastation left in the wake of 50 years of brutal domination of one planet over another. Hardly anyone he had ever met before the Federation arrived had known anything else.
“Yes. Sometimes it is better,” he easily admits. Sometimes people deserved a happy ending. Sometimes it was safer that way. He had spent the better part of his life struggling to find that very balance.
“This face...” Odo gestures to himself, hesitating, “it’s not real. It is my approximation of what you are. Human. Solid. Most people I have met... find reasons to fear who I am, what I am, rather than understand. But it exhausts me to-- perform. I think you know what I mean.”

❝ yes, as a matter of fact. ❞
in spite of the customary cross of his arms, odo's tone remains light. the days had long since passed since he'd felt the need to square up to anyone from the federation anymore. they were solids. some among them would always hold misgivings, and odo, now many years a representative between his world and theirs, would not blame them for that.
( still, it never became any less irritating. )
❝ the founders would like to see an end to this situation as urgently as the federation would. perhaps even more so. ❞

"I'm afraid the rumors are true. All of them." Odo allows the boy to elaborate at length, fighting back the turn of a wry smile in favor of a more mysterious, knowing one. In truth, Quark is both the scourge and... admittedly, at the heart of the station, at least for Odo. Quark has been here ever since Odo first arrived. He'd nearly become an installation, much as Odo had, himself. He scoffs under his breath.
Tumblr media
There had never been much to like about life aboard this station. Very few people had ever arrived here by choice, even within the Federation, and it held haunting memories for all who had lived through the Occupation.
But lately, miraculously, things had begun to change.
Odo's smile becomes more genuine. "I suppose it's that fact that I like the most," he explains, "it's loud and lively and-- messy, at times... but people here come from all corners of the sector. This place has become home now for so many who never expected to find one." He hesitates and looks ahead, clearing his throat, "including myself."
He stops in front of the upper entrance to the bar, from which a pair of klingons had just stumbled, laughing raucously.
"How would you like to see for yourself, up close?"
"What is it you like most about this station?" Pavel asks, old habits synchronising his steps with @constablegoo's as they walk the Promenade. His attention lingers only briefly on the edges of the constable's face before being pulled away by the commotion happening ahead, just outside the entrance to Quark's.
Tumblr media
"It is much livelier than any starbase I've ever seen. Major Kira explicitly told me to be wary of somebody named Quark"—and then immediately launched into a lengthy, heated explanation as to why—"but is he really so bad?"

                'love at first sight'
Tumblr media
let's be real, only children believe in "love at first sight." but you're a hopeless romantic probably sitting around in coffee shops waiting to meet "the one." and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. infatuation at first sight is more accurate. you are the moment when two people lock eyes, and the whole world stills. nothing is there but you and them. and there is suddenly a strong sense of longing. you love love, don't deny it. flowers, chocolates, the whole nine yards. because of this you are loved by many. hopefully you know it too: you are loved.

on the other other hand (and i tend to re-write this in my mind) the founder DID say they used to be "solid" . idk i kinda think its more interesting if they evolved differently and have always been completely alien like this but technically star trek canon is that they used to be solid, at least according to the founder (an UNRELIABLE source, it could have been one of her countless attempts to try and get odo comfortable around her)
plus there are these other similar aliens toward the end of tng who are potentially "reminiscent" of a branch of changelings (also keeping in mind the same actress who played the foundress played this character so its hard to resist) but . ANYWAY

ok yeah i do wish the ooze were more transparent and alien and shifty and less. fleshy.
but on the other hand ok consider: things that make the changelings repulsive to other species? that IS in line. odo's goo form tends to repulse people and/or freak them out
but still theyre NOT flesh, theyre something else. i could see maybe that one changeling being half-changed ( <- how im reconciling it in my mind LOL)

[ SPOCK .
SPOCK DOES NOTHING TO prevent the high rise of his brow at that revelation. He’s no stranger to the effect of temporal anomalies himself, and interestingly, on more than one occasion. It is an unlikely scenario for most to begin with. However, Spock has long since accepted his own particular uniqueness for contradiction in that way.
Tumblr media
“ Oh? ” A tick of amusement scratches at the sound of his voice, curious, and conceivably pleased in a manner that could be faulted on his old age. But Spock is wise enough to separate the truth in that regard. It would appear the mention of his former commanding officer has a profound effect on his emotional control even now. “ Well, Constable, I dare say you have provided compelling evidence for making such an introduction at a later date. I imagine your Captain Sisko is preoccupied during this investigation? ”
Tumblr media
Something changes about Spock. Something subtle. It’s the kind of thing that, as a humanoid observer, he has attuned himself to detect, and yet for all his wealth of practice, Spock remains as enigmatic as ever. Had he to hazard a guess, however, Odo might have drawn on the bond for which he and his former captain are so famed, even in this far reach of the galaxy.
“ As... a matter of fact, ”  Odo begins slowly,  “ he’d like to meet you. If you are in agreement, then I’m sure he will be delighted to -- ”  he laughs softly,  “ do everything in his power to make it possible. Actually, you’d better be careful: I thought I overheard talk of inviting you to, ah-- a baseball game. Are you familiar with the sport from Earth? ”
