Toys to Ease Anxiety
By: Ralda Robles
It can be difficult for some pets to receive the attention and care they require. This reality includes animals who live with seniors with constraints that impede them from caring for themselves. Interfaith Ministries administers pet food donations through AniMeals on Wheels weekly to homebound owners in the Greater Houston area. Additionally, volunteers take the time to check in on families and verify the current needs of citizens.
Although assistance from Interfaith Ministries is vital to seniors and their pets, there are additional necessities that can make day-to-day practices easier for communities. These assets are ideal for homebound elderly and may include busy families who find themselves separated from their pets during the day. The use of particular anxiety-reducing pet toys could save any animal who is likely to care for themselves while not under supervision.
To alleviate a nervous dog’s stress levels, owners can provide stimulating toys that can help maintain positive energy and productivity. These toys are likely to keep your dog busy throughout the day and you’ll likely benefit from relaxed energy levels once you’re able to make it home to them.
Before learning which toys to use, you should know how to administer them. One thing to keep in mind is the guessing tactic. It is beneficial to the owner to keep their pet guessing by leaving a different toy for them every other day. Additionally, these animals will benefit from having their toys hidden around the home every day. These methods allow them to entertain themselves and spend time searching for a rewarding toy.
The following toys have proven to serve as beneficial anxiety-reducing toys for busy families. If interested in helping homebound citizens or seniors, AniMeals on Wheels accepts toy and food donations throughout the year. These assets are likely to help older families who rely on the supervision of others such as volunteers.
Treat-Dispensing Toys
Tumblr media
This mentally stimulating toy serves as a food puzzle that has calming benefits. The market is currently filled with options, including scented versions infused with scents. As the pet searches for their reward, they also expend energy they would otherwise be consumed with.
KONG Classic Dog Toy
Tumblr media
Once your pet masters the puzzles, they’ll likely need to up the intensity of their game. To increase the difficulty, KONG has created toys focused on challenging your pet and keeping them busy. This one also tests their cognition and their ability to test themselves.
Ruff Dawg Om Dawg Stress Reduction System
Tumblr media
Relaxing music is another key method that has proven to be beneficial to anxiety-driven pets. This CD is filled with soothing vibrations that are specially tuned to help drive down heightened moods. A good tactic would be to play this music while you’re away and leaving them with rubber toys already mentioned. One rule of thumb is to leave the music on before leaving, so they don’t associate the music with your departure.

There’s a New Way to Donate
For organizations like AniMeals on Wheels and Cougar Paws for the Cause, scarcity in food donations can be a dooming reality. Unfortunately, in 2020, Interfaith Ministries was left to announce  the dire situation they were faced with. It appeared that instead of collecting the usual 10,000 pounds of monthly pet food, the organization was running dry. Now they had to follow-up by making an announcement to past and present donors in the hopes that more people would step up.
Tumblr media
Meal on Wheels serves around 4,000 seniors and in turn AniMeals on Wheels assists by feeding about 1,200 pets monthly. The organization is structured to alleviate the need for seniors to share their food with the furry friends they have at home. Before this installment, volunteers commonly noted the bowls of food left outside homes in an effort to feed animals with leftovers. These difficult circumstances inspired what we now know to be AniMeals on Wheels.
One other way this organization helps the community is by offering their supervision during visits. At times, volunteers take an extra moment to ensure that seniors are in good health and safety. This has made it easier for others report unacceptable conditions and foreseeable dangers.
Now AniMeals on Wheels is asking for the assistance of the public to efficiently meet their standards. To continue being an asset to the community, this organization must collect enough donations to feed the elderly and their pets in the surrounding area.
The original way to donate still remains as AniMeals has a designated donation drop-off center allocated within the city of Houston. Donors with resources can bring kibble and more to the center for the Greater Houston area at 3202 San Jacinto St., Houston, TX 77004.
Tumblr media
To make it even easier to donate, the organization has gone digital with a new way to become involved from the comfort of home. Those interested can visit the Wish List page on Amazon and search for Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston to find the AniMeals wish list. Here you can purchase bags of food to be delivered straight to the center or add fun gifts for the animals. If someone simply wants to make a small donation, they are welcome to visit imgh.org/donateanimeals and help with funding for additional resources.
These methods have all proven to be beneficial to the community and the organization which works to diminish the number of hungry pets and seniors in the city. The nutritious meals donated help keep everyone fed and ensure a comfortable quality of life for many. Mary Lou is an AniMeals client who says, “I’m lucky to be alive,” when asked about how the organization has helped her.
A large portion of elderly members of the community depend on these donations for themselves and the pets they must care for. Richard Wright is another client who is 50, living with a colostomy bag and a permanent disability. He says, “I get a hot meal every day and its always on time.” His disability makes it difficult for him to move around his home and care for his dog, but volunteers arrive to help them both.
Tumblr media
To continue this movement, Interfaith Ministries relies on helpful donations from the community throughout the year. People in the surrounding area should consider donating by using any of the three methods in an effort to help the organization progress. The time taken by volunteers and funding is what keeps the movement alive enough to help the seniors in the city of Houston.

AniMeals on Wheels in Search of Volunteers
Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston has brought us AniMeals on Wheels as one of their initiatives to provide meals for diverse communities in need. One of their main functions is to deliver free pet food to the sick or elderly who face difficulties while caring for their animals at home. Each year they can serve 4,000 or more homebound seniors from the Harris, Galveston and surrounding counties. By catering to these civilians, they also help more than 1,200 dogs and cats with feeding, neutering, immunization, and tick prevention services.
Tumblr media
One way Interfaith Ministries and AniMeals on Wheels reaches diverse groups is by contracting volunteers who can invest time in providing a safe harbor for those relying on assistance. In 2017, Volunteer Houston, a program that matches volunteers with nonprofits in Houston, was able to join the Interfaith Relations and Community Partnerships alliance. Now more than ever, people have been willing to offer their free time to help others in need. Regardless, there is still a void to fill for the AniMeals on Wheels organization.
As the donations grow, Interfaith Ministries has begun filling additional roles for pet food deliveries and organizing inventory. As with all opportunities, this role will be ongoing and require a designated person throughout the year.
Once a month, AniMeals will need a delivery driver to bring pet food to the home of seniors relying on assistance. These quantities will come from the allocated donation centers in the city of Houston. The driver will work closely with other volunteers who visit the routes set up for each district. There are currently four to six stops that are within close range of each other. Because these routes vary, they are spread throughout different counties, including Harris and Galveston.
Tumblr media
All volunteers should be prepared to take a unique route for each shift as the same one cannot be a guarantee throughout servicing. Interfaith Ministries is committed to working with each individual to find the route or schedule that works best for them. Currently, there are convenient weekday and Saturday time slots for donation pickups and drop-offs.
For those looking to register, there is a mandatory orientation to attend for training purposes. This session will showcase all details required to comfortably administer the pet food and help seniors. It is deemed vital to note such material as it could help volunteers maneuver unique circumstances throughout their experience.
To begin volunteering with Interfaith Ministries, applicants can contact the coordinator or the location contact, Cecilia. There will be personal information required, along with a brief interview before attending the orientation. After the application process, members will receive an e-mail providing dates and times for future training sessions.

How a Pet Could Improve a Seniors Health
Loneliness comes to mind as the first culprit for seniors diminishing health. The 2020 National Poll on Healthy Aging stated that one in three seniors is lonely. This state of chronic solidarity has proven to negatively impact the health of loved ones. It could cause an increase in the risk of heart attacks, depression and early death. To ensure an active and lively lifestyle, professionals recommend interaction with animals, especially a personal companion at home.
When helping seniors maintain a happier and more balanced life, house pets like dogs and cats assist in fostering an emotional connection and sense of companionship. Studies were conducted to note the improvement in quality of life, stress reduction and feeling of content. In fact, according to the National Poll on Healthy Aging by the University of Michigan, 79% of pet owners aged 50 to 80 said their pets help them reduce stress.
Here are more ways a pet could positively impact the elderly:
Tumblr media
Physical benefits
When adopting a pet, the owner's life is improved by an emotional boost and mobility. Owners can benefit from lower blood pressure, heart attack recovery, pain relief and longer life. These effects are due to the additional movement required throughout the day. A study from Loyola University found that seniors using pet therapy during surgery recovery required less medication to treat their pain. Others who have experienced heart attacks also proved to have a smoother recovery compared to those who didn't have companions. Generally, walking a dog is associated with lower obesity and blood pressure rates that alleviate heart complications.
Tumblr media
Mental Health
Having a pet at home equates to a sense of companionship, which may assist in avoiding emotional instability or feelings of loneliness. This support from animals will result in an improvement in overall emotional well-being. A few key statistics show that stress levels in seniors are reduced by the presence of pets nearby. This dependency helps them perform difficult tasks and show a reduction in feelings of agitation or restlessness.
Another positive impact derived from having pets at home would be the confidence boost. A study from Miami University showed that pet owners tend to have higher self-esteem than those who don’t have a furry companion. This study also aligns with the social interactions that seniors have outside their homes. Having a pet has proven to facilitate in interacting and creating new friendships with others.
Tumblr media
Pet therapy as an alternative:
If you have considered getting a pet as a companion for a senior but can’t invest in the responsibility, a therapy animal could be the solution. A pet is a way for the elderly to connect with animals, while not having to increase worries about the care. For those living in facilities, pet therapy may already be offered as an option in the establishment. There are also independent services offered where home visits can be scheduled for an extended period. These are usually partnered with professional therapy sessions and can be assisted by animals like birds, cats, dogs and other therapeutic companions.

Dry vs. Wet Dog Food
Tumblr media
We’ve discussed the most trustworthy brands based on quality and nutrition, but now it’s time to learn what kind of food your dog should be eating. It is important to keep in mind that each dogs' health varies, therefore the information provided should be applied on a case by case basis. Generally, consuming dry or wet food can have pros and cons when implemented in any diet. The take-away should be which type will suit your pet the best while still allowing them to try other varieties on occasion. This is also a key step in determining the variety of kibble or canned food to gather when donating to AniMeals on Wheels or to any other animal organization.
The well-being of dogs begins with good nutrition, which is reached through proper education on pet care and nutrition. Although there is a wide variety of formulas, the several proponents to consider are vital before adjusting your pet's diet. We do recommend finalizing your decision with the trusted advice from a certified veterinarian who has examined your dog's needs.
Here is what to consider when determining your dog's diet:
Tumblr media
Budget
The average cost of dry kibble is between $0.20 to $13 per day. On the other hand, wet food will set you back around one to six dollars per day. Before deciding on the lowest cost, consider the pros of both. If you stick with a bag of dry food, it's likely to have an easier time storing rather than having to find space in your refrigerator or purchasing an additional one. This is also the easiest option for donation centers like AniMeals on Wheels considering they're required to have easy storage options for the food that they bring in. When considering the wet option, this one will set you back a couple more dollars, but it is protein-dense and moisture-rich. We will review the health qualities of both in the following segments.
Should my dog consume grains?
There is an intense debate over whether grains belong in your dogs' food bowl or not. The pet food industry also ranges in recommendations, while many vouch for this ingredient in sales and others tell us to stay away. Those choosing dry foods will be including a large number of grains in their dog's diet. The advantage of cheaper nutrition is in regards to the replacement of protein with ingredients such as corn, wheat and soy. You could avoid these by going with the wet option or simply taking a deeper look at the nutrition label before purchasing another bag of kibble.
Dental health benefits
Tumblr media
A quality diet is vital in stabilizing your dog's health and ensuring longevity. It's common for owners to ignore aspects like dental hygiene, which can lead to aggressive health issues in the future. The most prominent idea is that dry dog food is the best choice considering this kind has been said to leave a residue, which turns to plaque. Although this has been scientifically supported, it is also important to note that new studies claim the same for dry kibble. In turn, the pet food industry has begun implementing options that are approved as dental-friendly and safe. This list was compiled by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) and is updated regularly on their website.
So what will it be?
Once the owner has compiled a list of the vital aspects of their dog's health, they can decide on the type of food that works best for their pet. Generally, the contents of nutrition should be a deal-breaker. While budget is important, it shouldn’t be a driving force in determining what to feed your dog. An animal's health will suffer if not catered to, and in turn, vet visits could become costly. As always, the last word should be given by an approved specialist.

4 Dry Dog Food Options to Depend On
By: Ralda Robles
It's common for owners to wonder what brand brings the most nourishment for their pets. Advertisements have become increasingly difficult to trust as we enter another year filled with FDA recalls on both wet and dry dog food. In January alone, a brand called Sportmix was the cause of 110 deceased animals in the United States.
Fortunately, Cougar Paws for the Paws has compiled a list created for those with pets at home or donors who bring bags to the AniMeals on Wheels distribution center. Our organization ensures the local elderly demographic that their pet needs will be cared for when they are out of resources. With a further examination of the quality of food, we can continue fostering security among our communities.
Although AniMeals on Wheels accepts all pet food donations, we want to focus on dry dog food. This variety is easiest for transportation and most accessible for the animals at home without known allergies.
According to Dog Food Advisor, a private network featuring nutritionists and veterinarians, owners should consistently review labels before each purchase. There are high-rated brands that have faced recalls as often as others less mentioned. The following list was crafted specifically for March, based on the most recent studies conducted using veterinarian reviews.
In no particular order, we begin with Wellness Complete Health Dry Dog Food. The ingredients are easy to pronounce and include whole-foods like peas, sweet potato, oatmeal and barley. If your pet requires a balanced meal, including grains and protein, this brand will assist their digestion for smooth functioning.
Tumblr media
Nature’s Logic is another company that has a grain-inclusive ingredient list. This kibble is known as one of the few brands that meet the nutrient standards set by The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), by actively using live feeding trials. Compared to other brands, this one falls in the middle price range for those trying to stay on a budget.
Tumblr media
Taste of the Wild tops our list when considering a balanced meal. It scores a 56% fat-to-protein ratio and is centered around using nutrient-dense ingredients during production. A larger portion of their meat protein comes from fresh buffalo, chicken and lamb. The price tag wins us over as it’s also one of the least costly bags of food you can pick up at the store.
Tumblr media
Blue Buffalo Life Protection has gained popularity in recent years for a good reason. This grain-inclusive kibble is also protein-packed and proven to fuel your pet. Its fat-to-protein ratio is about 58%, which makes this choice a smart start for developing puppies or senior dogs dependent on their nutrition.
Tumblr media
When considering nutritional needs, owners should examine the current lifestyle, age and size of the pet. To avoid difficulties associated with health, the ingredients in the kibble should be free of preservatives, colorants, synthetics and moisturizers. These are all deemed high-risk and are likely to have altering effects.
If an owner spots any of these items in their regular dog food, the best way to transition them to new kibble is gradual. A rushed process will include the risk of complicated digestive issues or other medical emergencies. It is best to increasingly replace a portion of the old food with the new until the bowl is made entirely of the new kibble.
Stay tuned for more information regarding pets and safely help the community by donating nutritious meals.

AniMeals On Wheels Looks to Expand
By: Ralda Robles
March 1, 2021
Meals on Wheels was founded in 1954 with the intent to bring seniors nutritious meals, social support and enriching connections. Their vision remains constant on removing the experiences of social isolation or hunger from the lives of those seeking resources. The need for assistance also extends to the care required by the pets residing with homebound and elderly citizens.
In 2007, Greater Houston’s Meals on Wheels for Greater Houston program began using funds to offer assistance to the pets of seniors depending on donations and volunteers. Originally, the organization set out to help the elderly who found themselves sharing meals with the hungry animals they have at home. This pet support program now looks towards partnering with large franchises like PetsMart to expand on their current capabilities and reach more furry companions nationwide.
Food insecurity has been a rampant topic among the volunteers donating their time to bring meals to those in need. Even more, the pet owners who seek assistance are also in dire need of protecting the health of the animals they have at home. By partnering with PetsMart, AniMeals has the opportunity to offer veterinarian services as well as nutritional care.
Tumblr media
In the first year of working together, AniMeals on Wheels received a $20,000 donation from the pet company to help provide veterinary care and supplies for the pets of seniors in need.
One of the missions shared by AniMeals is the effort to assist the elderly in maintaining independence. By bringing 11,000 pounds of pet food and reaching approximately 1,300 pets monthly, they have brought a sense of comfort to the homes of many requiring helpful resources.
Tumblr media
Interfaith Ministries, which organizes the Meals on Wheels chapter in Houston, has hosted a Pet and Senior Wellness Fair each year to bring awareness. There, pets were examined by volunteer veterinarians using supplies purchased with the funds donated by PetsMart. Several animals required flea, tick and heart-worm treatments, while others benefited from long-awaited grooming.
Because the funding has been limited since the founding of AniMeals in Houston, the organization wants people to know how valuable their donations can be. Due to the first round of grants, 171 pets on a veterinary care list have been granted vital assistance by trained professionals.
Additionally, organizers for the non-profit advise others to volunteer at future events or with their community. They want to spread awareness of the misconceptions surrounding the abandoned pets roaming the city. In many cases, the animals who have been neglected are a direct consequence of incapable owners such as the elderly.
Tumblr media
Those interested in helping seniors can volunteer their time by taking pets to veterinary appointments, picking up food or walking dogs during the day. Interfaith Ministries urges people to sign-up with AniMeals on Wheels or to venture out within their neighborhoods.
If time can’t be donated, community members are encouraged to donate dog food or other supplies which may be useful to the program or professionals volunteering with PetsMart. The Meals on Wheels distribution center is located at 3202 San Jacinto, 77004. These drop-offs are accepted between 11 AM and 1 PM on weekdays.
The following pet stores carry food accepted by our distribution centers: PetSmart, Natural Paws, Central Pet Market, Rockie and Maggie’s pet shop, Kriser’s Natural Pet and the Pet Shop.
