At the risk of coming across as controversial, I’d like to give my opinion on some Ao3 discourse.

Ao3 was founded by a ThorKi shipper. Yes, someone who ships Marvel’s Thor and Loki, who are (albeit adopted) brothers. According to some data mining, it’s very likely the first fic on the site was a Wincest one as well. There’s no censorship on the site, and there’s a filtering system to compensate (that I use every time I’m looking through a tag I enjoy).

You’re going to see things you don’t like. And when you come across a tag or a warning or a rating you don’t want to see, you can simply add it to the “exclude” part of the filtering system.

A lot of younger users are coming onto Ao3 from sites like TikTok and Wattpad, and they’re bringing a few of their bad habits over. I’m not talking about placeholder fics or using it like a social media site — that’s a post for another time. I’m talking about bringing hate and bigotry into comment sections and harassing authors over their works and preferences. This shouldn’t be happening.

Ao3 is a website founded by a proshipper, made for proshippers. It’s a free website, and no one is allowed to profit off of it (looking at you, people who bind and sell fanfiction on eBay. Not cool.). The lack of censorship is the price every user must pay for that.

If content you consider problematic is a dealbreaker for you, then maybe you should find another website.

Got permanently banned from a subreddit for saying law enforcement shooting someone dead in the street was still a bad thing even when the victim was a violent right-wing fanatic.

Gotta say, I did not expect that to be such a controversial statement. So repeating it here: law enforcement shouldn't kill people. Even violent assholes have a right to be taken in alive, and it's a failure of practice and policy when someone is killed in the process of an arrest.

the space seed episode of tos where they find khan and the ss botany bay is so funny because right off the bat you have kirk being like "yeah let's get that historian whats-her-name out there, maybe she can be useful for once" and it's like WOAH what's up with the liberal arts hate?? why is kirk being such a bitch to this lady for no reason. then you meet her and she's fucking obsessed with historical strongmen to the point of covering her walls in her own fanart. she lives on a spaceship in a utopian technofuture and she sleeps surrounded by busts of kings on purpose. her vibes are fashy and kirk is right to be a bitch, actually.

then they get to the botany bay and she's immediately driven to distraction by how horny she is for ricardo montalban under a thick layer of extra-dark foundation. sorry i'm gonna compare montalban with and without the makeup because it is SO distracting

also she refers to sikhs in the past tense implying that at some point in the last two hundred years there was a genocide that they're just glossing over. since she also calls them a warrior race it's also possible that she's just racist and somewhere on board the enterprise there are sikh crew members who dislike her as much as kirk does.

anyway you can assume that this is her first actual away mission and she fumbled immediately because she was so hot for khan but it's much funnier if this isn't the first time this has happened. every time they have to interact with a historical earth artifact she gets so horned up thinking about being a tradwife that she's rendered speechless. spock stays polite but kirk can't stand her. by the time kirk found out she was the type of person to paint her own portraits of napoleon and roman emperors to hang in her quarters it was too late to send her back and request literally anyone else. he's supposed to court martial her but offers to let her stay on fashy eugenics planet just so he won't have to keep her on his ship anymore. it's unclear if he lets her take her paintings or jettisons them into space.

Antis calling everything problematic just made me more accepting of problematic content. If you're going to scream and rage and lose your shit over a 56 year old and a 50 year old in a consenting relationship where they have equal power, then I might as well go ahead and ship something that's actually got power imbalances or unhealthy dynamics. You're going to whine about it anyway.

This is, for the record, not just a 'me' thing. A really common thing in strict Christian homes in all four of the states I've lived in - West Virginia, Indiana, Utah and Montana - is that if wearing shorts or listening to country music is considered just as vile and evil as actual crimes like underage drinking or theft, then the kids raised in those homes go, "Well, my ass is screwed when I get home anyway. Might as well go ahead and steal that kid's jacket."

When you make anger your default setting, your outrage loses meaning. This doesn't make anyone safer, it just makes people better at being sneaky.
