Michonne: Hi,.....hi. How are you doing? Why are you so big?
Judith: I knew it dad. I knew you were still out there dad.
RJ: You're the brave man?
Rick: I am.........but maybe you can call me dad.
What folks who complained about the romance in TOWL cannot seem to grasp about Rick.
What Shane failed to understand.
And Beale.
And Pearl.
And fuckin shitface Negan.
And those ungrateful Saviors.
And even Okafor.
Is that LOVE and EMPATHY do not make Rick weak. They are precisely what makes him stronger than Shane, and Negan, and Beale, and Pearl, and anyone else who believes that him being a sensitive caring person is something that weakens him. Horse shit. No. The whole premise of the ENTIRE show (TWD) is:
Who survives?
The most cruel?
Or the ones who remember their humanity (which very much includes love) at the end of the day?
Who survives?
Rick and Michonne.
Love is not fuckin easy. It’s hard as all hell to love human beings. We’re flawed egotistical mush, it’s not easy to choose love. It’s muuuuch easier to give in to our base instincts, otherwise there wouldn’t be so many cruel horrible murdering jackasses roaming around post apocalypse. Choosing love in a word like that is the hardest thing. That IS strength beyond measure. GTFOH.
My sister just recently let my 14 year old nephew begin to watch zombie genre media and he’s devouring The Walking Dead. He’s been in our family chat giving live updates and reactions as he watched TWD all week during term break. He’s reached Season 3 and absolutely LOVES Michonne — thinks she’s the best character on the show (rightfully so).
He got to that scene after Woodbury where Rick is all, “We patch you up and you are gone” to Michonne and then posts this in the group chat:
No no no Rick! Just no! You’re gonna marry her. She’s not going anywhere!
This kid has never been in fandom and didn’t know what shipping was. I had to explain it and he was like, “Yep. I ship them.”
Every time I see this scene I immediately think of this—
There's a lot of talk about Rick and RJ and how they interacted and how the actors played the scene, but my eyes keep gravitating to Michonne in this moment. The way she presents RJ to Rick is just so... like she's nervous and proud and trying to process the fact that her son is finally able to meet his father and the love of her life is finally able to meet the manifestation of their bond.
Mr. and Mrs. Grimes kissed 104 times in six episodes. This is what Passion, heat and smoldering chemistry looks like. Nobody is doing it like them or this show
