it is so fucking sad to watch tumblr falling into first place through sheer incompetence only to trip over their own feet (start updating the site) at the finish line. you coulda done it, you stupid assholes. we were back in a 'tumblr good' phase, you had actual word of mouth marketing going strong at the time a bunch of other social medias are collapsing. i could have recommended that my job to open a tumblr account during the height of the craze with all the articles about how tumblr is up and coming. i did not and would not because i'm a long time user actively watching the site crash and burn. i am no longer even recommending that my friends join tumblr. i have deleted the app from my phone. i am contemplating deleting a blog i've maintained for over 10 years. i feel actively bad for the friends who did join tumblr before you saw the influx of users, lost your fucking minds, and started tearing the site apart. what a colossal waste

"biblical angels" you do realise there are angels in the old testament that are literally just regular looking guys, right? you do know that the hallucinogenic incoherent descriptions are in like. two books. and the rest of the time angels are just guys. you know that, right?
and I'm not saying don't have fun with weird angels. I'm saying, either the eldritch forms are for special occasions, or the society of the angels is Many-Eyed-Many-Winged-Interlocking-Circles, Four-Faces-Six-Wings, and Mike.

me and áhkku
áhkku means grandma in davvisámegiella. She used to wrap my shoes for me when I was kid, and I feel that things like that are a way of showing love, I remember it well. While I was drawing this she was texting me pictures of the half finished leather bag she's making for me (same type as she's wearing in this drawing) and saying she's having a nice time sewing and thinking of me<3 making things for each other is also love
also this is my childhood gákti and liidni. my cousin wears it now

A lot of people might want to remove the new dashboard but not have heard of the dashboard unfucker, or may be intimidated by the amount of coding involved in making Tampermonkey work. If you would simply allow the new dash to be toggled off, a significantly higher portion of people would do so than are currently using the dashboard unfucker.
(responding to the last post) the thing is, since you can track that stuff, wouldnt the popularity of things like @/dragongirlsnout's dashboard unfucker, other similar add-ons (not including constant posts about how much this new feature sucks and reminders to turn off things like live) damn this experiment and ones like it as a failures?
i didn't wanna answer this til i had some data, but the number of people actually using that extension is infinitesimally small. less than one percent of one percent of the people using tumblr every day. that's not something i'd consider "popular" at tumblr's size.
so on its own, it is not an indicator of "success" or "failure". and people are very welcome to make extensions like that if they want, customizing tumblr how they want to use it. i've used xkit myself a few times for specific things i wanted to do on tumblr. having a robust ecosystem of third-party plugins and tools, even ones that "revert" parts of the platform, are usually a signal of a healthy platform, if anything.

🌟 New
Snoozing Tumblr Live will continue to hide Live from your dashboard feeds, but the navigation icon will remain in your navigation bar. This means you’ll be able to watch anyone you follow go Live without having to unsnooze the whole thing. Additionally, we’ve increased the snooze period from 7 to 30 days. (There is a bug with the “New” indicator — check “Ongoing” below.)
🛠 Fixed
We’ve updated “Based on your likes” and “Liked by…” recommendations to skip trying to recommend posts you’ve already reblogged.
For folks on web seeing the new post header redesign experiment, we’ve fixed some visual glitches with the reblogged-from text when viewing the site in German.
When using Tumblr in a browser on a mobile device, it’s no longer possible to get stuck in the Messages page if navigating to it from certain other pages (such as the blog view).
🚧 Ongoing
The Tumblr Supporter badges are not yet visible in the mobile apps, for those of you who bought them on web. Upcoming versions of the iOS and Android apps will display them, though. Soon!
Folks are seeing the “New” badge on the Live navigation icon even though the feature is obviously not new to them. We’re working to fix that up as soon as we can.
🌱 Upcoming
Nothing new to report here today.

Tumblr users: "I love tumblr's minimalist aestetic"
Tumblr: "here is a new dashboard to clutter it up, the good news is we're doing an experiment, the bad news is we've already decided you're all getting it"
Tumblr users: "I hate it, it's too cluttered, change it back"
Tumblr: "We hear your feedback! Here's a giant unremovable clown pirate, if you don't like it write a program about it lol"

My take is that "forced diversity" in media very much isn't a real thing but there is a trend of diversity with 0 thought put into how characters' identities affect them & if it makes any fucking sense what they're doing in the story. And also everybody forgot what tokenism is

I think we’ve reached actively hostile user design at this point.
An “experiment” which removes a vital function of the website, inflicted on users without their consent.
An a/b test with unclear metrics, but the clear sense that, whatever they’re testing for, they decided in advance they will inevitably roll this out to the entire userbase- this is hot on the heels of the wildly unpopular dashboard “experiment”, which also claimed to welcome “feedback”, but dismissed all negative feedback as outliers. (Doesn’t matter if everyone is publicly complaining, so long as people...look at their inboxes more?)
The attitude of staff seems to be that everyone who doesn’t like it will just install multiple browser extensions to change it, and new users will come flocking in?
To a site with a porn feed at the top of the dash which cannot be permanently removed, but which will censor a trans person’s cute selfie as adult. To a site where new users CANNOT opt out of an algorithmic dash feed, where the loyal users have stayed around for the minimal, chronological timeline, but it’s not “minimal” anymore, and “chronological” is clearly on the way out in a future “a/b experiment” despite staff claims to the contrary. To a site which has birthed so many reblog chains which have gone legend, and is currently in the process of destroying reblog chains, and removing the actual avatars people consult to see who’s done the reblogging.
Six months ago, I was considering going ad-free. Now I’m just wondering where to go.

🌟 New
We’re running a new experiment that changes the header on posts to reduce the redundancy of avatars in reblogs, save some vertical space by moving recommendation labels around, afford more room for badges, and more! On desktop web, it also removes the floating avatars and makes posts full width with the sidebars. If you have feedback about this change, please send it in to Support using the “Feedback” category.
We’ve removed the blog carousel at the top of the Blog Subs dashboard tab (for those who have it enabled), as it was causing the load time to worsen dramatically. (You can enable this tab in your Tumblr Labs settings, or via the new experimental dashboard tab configuration button if you have it.)
🛠 Fixed
Fixed an issue in recommended and related tag card carousels that would show a “Follow” button when you’re already following that tag.
We were having some issues with SoundCloud embeds not working in posts, but it’s cleared up now.
In mobile phone browsers, the “Source” and “Submitted by” text at the bottom of posts is now correctly aligned on the left (it was a few pixels off).
Also in mobile phone browsers, we’ve cleaned up a visual glitch on trending tag pages that was causing the “Trending now” label to be on the same line as the tag itself.
🚧 Ongoing
Nothing to report here today.
🌱 Upcoming
We’ve recently posted on @labs about something that is not upcoming, but stay tuned for info there on something that is upcoming!

here's your fucking feedback @staff
list of problems the removal of icons causes:
i cant see my friends
ruins the sense of community
can't tell at a glance who's online right now and what they're interested in
literally cannot tell without scrolling back up who put a post on my dash if it has a single addition attached to it. or like. 2 paragraphs in the op.
i cant click my own icon at the top of the dash to quickly view my own blog
can't tell who someone used to be if they change their username
squashes the margins between the menu and posts, making the whole dash feel more cramped
ruins the quick visual cue of how long each post is and where it ends when you're trying to scroll past ones youve seen before
people put a lot of creativity and individuality into icons, and now i never see them
makes people who primarily reblog instead of make their own posts all but completely disappear
list of problems solved by removing icons:
?????
who the fuck was asking for this
ive never in my life seen a website or app that has profile pics forcibly HIDE them, so i guess you did it you made the dash unique again in the worst way
here's some more feedback: maybe when you run an a/b test you should, idk, actually have a feedback form people can fill out about it somewhere

And for the people who don’t like the new dash but have a hard time figuring out Tampermonkey (or hopefully, eventually, XKit), tumblr staff have graciously offered that you can go fuck yourself
Oh look, it seems everyone has been opted into the unfortunate "experiment" now. For everyone who has been blissfully using the old UI up until now, welcome to hell :)
Do you not like hell? Do you want to leave and crawl back up into the sunlight of the old UI? Well, have I got a link for you! A beautiful tumblr user has gone and fixed things beautifully for you already: https://github.com/enchanted-sword/dashboard-unfucker
You will need you have Tampermonkey installed on your browser of choice, and once that's done, just go to the github link above, and peruse the readme to install. And voila! You have your old dash back!
The authors of XKit Rewritten said during the experiments that at the time, since this was an "experiment" they weren't going to implement anything to revert to the old UI (although who knows if they'll do it now). And the dashboard unfucker has worked beautifully enough for me to where I genuinely couldn't tell if they had ended the experiment or not.
