Poor Thief!
Tumblr media
Recommended for: Someone who just wants the top free games in the app store to deliver on supposed popularity. By that I mean, oftentimes when I see a puzzle game on the charts, it’s not really a puzzle game at all. It will be an ugly, poorly executed… interactive something, the sole purpose of which seems to be to cram ads between every single seven-second ‘level’. They’re not challenging, or thoughtful, just revenue, and most importantly they’re just no fun. I want to know what the metric by which “top” games are picked; at this point I’m convinced it’s not reviews, play time, or downloads. Because of that, I don’t often trust your average free puzzle game, and I skip over quite a few. However! I’m glad I didn’t skip over this one. In Poor Thief!, you attempt to slide your little thief to a gem in as few moves as possible. It introduces enough complications as you progress to keep it interesting all through the available levels, and there are solutions to each level for the low low price of a single ad, which I found to be a nice touch on their part. It’s relatively short, but you probably won’t finish it in a single sitting, and there’s some replay value in shaving down moves in levels you didn’t do perfectly. Also? That music is sufficiently heist-ey, my compliments to the chef. On the monetary end, you can pay to remove ads, or to just give the devs a tip, and neither are egregious sums. The ads aren’t intrusive though, a skippable one every few levels, so it’s no bother to let them play out. All in all, definitely recommend it, and if anybody does so much better than me that they get to see what is locked behind perfecting every level….. Tell me what it is :p

The blog is started and the post is up, I promised a personal post and just didn’t get to it! The holidays loom and stopping people from spending them physically together is exhausting. That said though, I’ve got a log of games I’m working on, hopefully I can set up some semi-regular game posts.
So! Howdy, I’m Corn. Mobile games fascinate me more than they have any right to, and my poor friend deserves respite from my infodumps about whatever new game I’m playing. Everything from the plots to the mechanics to the monetization schemes makes it so I’m miserable conversation, so this is the blog where that’ll get dumped. Primarily that’ll be in the form of review-style posts, where I compile what I’ve been thinking and condense it into something that might be useful. Though, also, might make a lot of less useful posts on my own time, because I just have a lot to say about them. You’ll find there are no number systems, because frankly I just don’t like them. A wide variety of games are on the market, and I think there are people who would find any of them fun, so I’ll describe the sort of person who might want to give them a shot. With some exceptions, of course. I’ll also compile the games I recommend most in a genre, once I get there. I’m also looking to follow more game blogs on my main account, and chatter of the sort is welcome. For the time being, I have a few recommendations, the stuff on my phone I need to finish the writeups on, and a backlog of games I downloaded before I had this idea, so I’ll have a lot to work with but am always accepting suggestions. I’ll finish my bio soon for the specifications on what I’ll be more likely to check out. Think that’s all there is to say for the time being, I’ll have another post up soon, so I’ll see you then.

Reach: SOS
Tumblr media
Recommended for: Indie aficionados, the sort who might check newgrounds once every three months to see if a gem has washed up.
Reach is quite short (maybe ten or twenty minutes) and has a few light but novel puzzles, but its strength is in its pleasant art and the atmosphere it creates. I want to know more. It’s got a weirdly nostalgic feeling to it, the kind of thing that might start a beloved series on the internet of yore. On their twitter it is phrased as having the first two chapters out, so it may well update with more later? I’ll definitely be looking out for that, and seeing what else that team gets up to. It’s free, it’s short, and it’s very charming, so I’d say there’s no reason not to give it a shot.
For my first post here, I wanted to write on something I really liked. There’s a few games I keep coming back to, but while I was trying to decide, I stumbled across this! Went in blind as I tend to do, so I didn’t notice the puzzle gimmick for a bit, but overall, just love it. Some monkey possessed me when I figured out how to get a key for a certain door, delightful experience. Blogging is slow-going, but hopefully I’ll have a personal post out soon, and move on to another little puzzler I’ve been working through while I line up the backlog... Very excited. Anyhow, go ahead and check that out, and also... one of the artists websites has a fun quiz about what your life would be like as a medieval peasant. Just saying. Check it out!
