I actually didn’t like that interpretation because I feel you’re boxing in characters with things that fundamentally doesn’t make complete sense.
For example: Mace’s purple lightsaber color isn’t because he uses “dark side tactics”. He was a kid/teen when it was purple. In Legends, he wanted his lightsaber to signify sonething significant and desired to stand out in his own way and won his purple lightsaber crystal as part of his life journey helping out a species before he was an adult. This would be way before he would do any of that in his life that led him to create a unique path as a Jedi. Also, some of the most formidable Jedi seen in the franchise often have Green (Yoda, Depa Billaba, Luminara) and they’re great fighters too. Alternatively, Obi-Wan had a blue lightsaber throughout his life & he’s renown as a diplomat in both canons and he certainly is a strong adherent wanting to use his lightsaber first.
The issue I think that format present is it risks removing agency for characters and assigns characteristics to a characters that won’t be true: Windu’s methodology is unique but he tirelessly traditional, isn’t scared to use his saber, and all his work is to channel his personal short-comings regarding his passionate temperament to sonething positive. That’s completely the opposite of dark side tactics. Anakin is not just a warrior. He’s a capable tactician & and innovative/capable teacher & well with his hands in other areas (droid programming, piloting). He’d qualify for green & yellow lightsaber too iirc how the color coding system works.
They’re fun ideas but ultimately, I think it got dropped because then, you’re tacking on additional hurdles for characterization and I believe it risks having the lightsaber speak too closely to the character rather than the character speak about themselves & a lightsaber /color/ cannot capture the complexity of a character throughout their lifetime.
That’s just my opinion on the matter.
okay sooooo
am I the only one who actually prefers the lore that says that Jedi collect their crystals and then meditate with them and that's what gives the crystal it's colour??? (i certainly hope not)
i know it's a thing in the comic books where characters just pick out a crystal with the color already ingrained into it and there's nothing more to it but I feel like half the reason lightsabers are cool to me is because they actually tell you something about the user, they tell you their preferences in combat, how they view the force and sometimes even how deadly they can be
Tumblr media
do I wanna believe mace windu just found a purple crystal or do I wanna believe he got this rare color because he uses dark side tactics but has the ability not to be blinded by them?
Tumblr media
the first time I saw Anakin's lightsaber was blue I thought it was very telling about who he was and I believe that it was actually the first hint to his dark tactics and eventually his fall to the sith (even if it was by accident this is my interpretation).
how could the chosen one, the person with the most midi-chlorians, a person who has incredible force potential, uses a blue lightsaber instead of a green one? it is so accurate to his character because blue means you prefer using your saber to using the force in combat, they're also usually the first to pull them out and the ones to do it without hesitating to anyone anywhere.
i just thought it was perfect, that paired with an aggressive style, it was right under their noses

Ngl, this was the first argument i saw on Tumblr a while back when I started covering Star Wars content on my blog and the whiplash I had when realizing how people interpreted the scene vs what actually happened. It made me get in the habit of double/triple checking scenes bc people just come out of the woodwork with crazy recollection.
The number of times I've seen people misconstrue/misremember the Tatooine plot of Phantom Menace as "the Jedi (even though it was Qui-Gon) bought/stole Anakin" is astounding
One time I even had someone say OBI-WAN (he was on the ship the whole time) was the one who bought Anakin
This is beyond "media literacy is dead"

“ Why do people hate things being Jedi critical? It’s okay if they’re flawed.”
There’s flawed and then there’s presenting the idea the in universe religious minority who essentially have to fucking do everything as narratively ‘flawed’ bc they don’t appease everybody essentially. Be it Anakin, be it their philosophy, etc and correlate to the idea of how that leads to their fall. Most ‘Jedi critical’ points just assigns a unusual level of onus on them for simply existing. Jedi are human/human-like so we know they’re flawed to a point but when they’re accessory to slavery, accuse them of child taking, or whatever points and ignore context, it’s not being critical. Y’all just wanna slander.
Whats actually annoying is how this fandom & this franchise can look at this religious minority group (composing a lot of PoCs & allusions to other cultures) who get literally persecuted by a politician who created a entire army called Stormtroopers, which is right on the nose for Nazi allegories, and go “lets craft ideas & stories that suggest they’re at fault for really existing & not being perfect paragons of good.” This is the same fandom to say the Sith made some good “points” despite being a part of the problem, ignore the Msndalorian’s weird ass system of government, and find ways to sympathize with characters who participate in murder & genocide because they’re hot (Anakin, Kallus, Maul).
And to top it all off, the story had them killed via mind control to shoot them in the back by people they bonded with for maximum hurt & efficiency after fabricating a war using OTHERS.

Reminder that the Guardians of the Whillis are a great non-force sensitive alternative to being a Jedi. Yes being a Jedi requires being force sensitive BUT Guardians adhere to a lot of their philosophy especially since they help protect kyber crystals.
They’re not a nation & obligated to accept anybody and everybody good grief.
A non-force user cannot learn and follow the Jedi teachings and philosophy and be a valid Jedi? The Air Nomads were not all airbenders, but they all shared the same culture. The Jedi are meant to be more than just space wizards with laser swords, yes? Are the Jedi like the Air Nomads or just the Airbenders?
The ability to use the force is a requirement of being a Jedi, yes.

I’ve said this before but just to expand what I was saying earlier regarding Zatanna’s not necessarily being “de-aged” to be with Dick Grayson in YJ. In comics, Zatanna was moreover aged up to be closer to Batman.
Dependening on the stories, Zee starts off her heroism at 18-21. Sometimes she joins the JL after years of searching for her father or around the same time.
Tumblr media
[Secret Origins v2 #27 - Recounted through Dr. Mist, who reveals being the mastermind behind her father & her upheavals in life by force via Felix Faust. In the story, he does realize how fucking creepy and patronizing his actions were.]
Tumblr media
[ Justice League of America #51 - This story places her at 20 years old when she finally reunited with her father and joins the JL a short time later. But this story makes it seem like she was an orphan rather than raised by her father for a chunk of her childhood.]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ DCU Heroes Secret Files & Origins #1 - This timeline would imply that she joined the JL first at 21.]
All these sources came prior to her history with Batman, which would naturally move her timeline to make her adjacent with him prior.
Tumblr media
[Compared that to Dick, whom she met alongside the Titans in Tales of the Teen Titans #4 in the 1980s. By then, Dick was already college bound with high school graduation [Batman #217]or a teenager depending on your context, placing him roughly 16-18 give or take. This same series in which the picture above has him retire the Robin name in #39, which modern stories typically have that done at 18 years old.]
I think it’s very important to note that Zatanna’s character has changed overtime and that there’s no definite “Justice League generation” vs other generations of heroes. There’s not this neat little box where every DCU character conveniently fits in.
The Titans might fit in the “heroes in their 20s” box and the Teen Titans feature heroes younger than 18 but even then, some TT reached 18+ [Red Devil] and there’s been a plethora of heroes in their 20s in the JL [Kyle Rayner, Khalid Nassour, Ronnie Raymond/Jason Rusch]. Just like the JSA has younger members & successors who join, the JL features membership of varying ages.
Tumblr media
[I literally forgot the source of this.]
I understand the basis makes it seem like Zatanna is infantalized but that’s not necessarily true. The character wasn’t always Bruce’s childhood friend and at one point, only met significantly in the JL to Batman’s own recollection. & one other time where she was disguised as a witch unknown to Bruce himself long before the retcon that made them childhood friends came to be.
It’s also hard to say “Zatanna has to be around this age bc she hangs out with so-and-so” because characters like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman has had their histories altered in many ways. Barry Allen’s age has never been stated so using his interest in her as an age gauge is iffy and honestly, in real life, people have relationships, flirtations, and friendships with people older and younger than them. Part of adulthood is meshing with people & it’s not always convenient that you’ll be friends with people your own age. Interpersonal relationships are also multi-faceted and complex.
I also think it’s sets a bad precedent to not examine the character’s history and go off of the “idea” of where characters are instead of their history. Various DC characters already get this:
Billy Batson is always like 10 or 12 when people think of him but like he’s been 15 & 16 too. His relationship with Courtney Whitmore for example happened when he’s in high school himself. He is also chronologically older than Jon Kent regardless of space bullshit.
Raven & Beast Boy’s character get de-aged to the point they’ve been in Dick, Tim, and Damian’s version of the Teen Titans in media & comics.
Jaime Reyes remained eternally in high school until recently and it took a movie to budge him from that.
Stephanie Brown & Cassandra Caín are out here having Damian be closer to them in age because editorials, writers, and fanon completely forget both characters have been 18 far longer than anybody thinks.
Khalid Nassour debuted in 2015 already 23 years old & a year older than DICK GRAYSON IN THE SAME YEARS. Nowadays, he’s drawn as a teen/college age guy and his timeline either implies he’s in his 30s now or in 2023, all his 100+ appearances took place in ONE YEAR so therefore, everyone he interacted with also progressed one year overtime?
Long story short, it’s really important in my opinion to consider a character’s history and not just go off of whose their friend is, what you think their idealized version is like, and do not use the characters whose timeline DC & Didio has outright played Russian Roulette with accommodate their idealized version of the characters as a placeholder.

For a time, Zee was actually close to Dick Grayson’s age, particularly during the NTT era when he was Robin still but close to debuting as Nightwing. Zee was 18 when she first joined the Justice League (Barry’s age has never been specified so I’m not gonna try).
Overtime, her timeline & Dick were adjusted long after to make Zee more comprable to Bruce to making them childhood friends, which then makes her adventures with the JL likely take place a little later into her adulthood. It’s important to note because NTT/Titans in general tended to be older than what people think and the JL isn’t always consisting of people in their 30s onward.
It's both funny/frustrating how Zatanna is shipped with characters from two different generations of two different franchises.
Batman/Zatanna from the comics. Chalant (Dick x Zee) from Young Justice. FlashMagic (Barry Allen/Zatanna) from the comics.
Anywa, y'all are free to ship whoever you want with her. I just find the whole situation amusing.
(Why YJ? Why? Also can DC stop deaging female heroes just for the sake of shipping?)

New 52 is still canon. They’re literally following up with the “Gray Son of Gotham” story in the latest Nightwing issue, which was first conceptualized in the same series.
And respectfully, in actual canon, Joker hates Dick the most. Out of all of Batman’s protégés, Joker went through the trouble of digging up old members of Haly’s Circus and out on a display, jokerized his old childhood extended circus family, and killed two of his childhood friends and Joker targeted them just to hurt one of the few vestments Dick has family wise outside Batfamily & even the Titans.
The ramification of that forced Dick to move out of Gotham (albeit there’s another reason), he lost a lot money and resources because he invested a significant amount of it on Amusement Mile, and he eventually had to use Batman’s money because he could not quite substain his equipment & suit on his own. Before that, he has his own penthouse & set up.
The event also was the final straw for Haly’s Circus, as they felt Dick was no longer relevant to them. It was strained because Haly left him the circus on his death bed instead of his loyal son (Haly knew he was Nightwing & trusted him to protect them from the Court of Owls) and when Joker attacked, that was too much for them. To this day, Dick has not reached out to them since because of that in any other story to my knowledge .
Joker went well over the top than any other of the Batfamily sans Bruce just to hurt Dick & it’s because he makes Bruce a better person & Dick being the type of person to put faith into others.
It is so funny to me that the Joker just hates Dick Grayson the most out of everyone in the batfamily.
And realistically, it's probably because he was the one who "took Batman from him and changed him to be softer", but I like to believe it's because Dick is funnier than him. One time, when he was Robin, Batman smiled when he made a joke or a pun and that just never happened when Joker made a joke (because you know, Dick was never a serial killer) and he is still salty about it and will be for the rest of his life.

You know, for all the talk about the importance and coolness of adoption and found families, y’all sure love to sleep on the Shazam Family and relatives they got. I mean for real.
You got the Wizard Shazam/Mamaragan (let’s get some diversity in this bitch)
Tumblr media
Then you have his found siblings:
Tumblr media
His edgy bio demon children:
Tumblr media
Another edgy kid he picked up (he’s actually called the “Son of Mamaragan”):
Tumblr media
That edgy kid’s (second) family:
Tumblr media
Edgy kid’s descendant:
Tumblr media
Another kid (DC writers have stated they have a father son relationship so bite me);
Tumblr media
That same kid’s legal, foster parents (I’m tired of y’all forgetting Victor/Rosa and their existence for Superman, Batman, Constantine, etc. Also Billy can have more than 2 parental figures)
Tumblr media
And the Vanquez’s foster family
Tumblr media
You got a very unique approach and connections with many characters to mess around, headcanon, play with, etc.
But like 98% of the time, people just wanna make Billy significant to Superman or Batman (because putting him with more black hair, blue eye kids that get treated interchangeably is smart) and Mary to the “Wonder Family” like they don’t got a family of their own.

One thing I found out about being a Doctor Fate stan is every time I talk about recommendations, people get the idea that they’re gonna get a comic exclusively focused on a white dude being a go-to magic dude like it’s Dr. Strange.
Like sorry to tell you but Kent Nelson is only the definitive because he’s the first one, not because he’s rich in lore & characterization. He’s usually pretty boring. He has more personality when he’s not the main Dr. Fate. But that’s also a given if you think you’ll have characterization when said character is just a body.
The fuck did you expect? It’s a precarious line between him being Dr. Fate and “Nabu and his little bitch” and most think the latter is a riveting for a hero to have as a “crutch” ALL THE TIME.

Yes, “Doctor Fate” is a passed down title and has been since 1987 with the introduction of Eric/Linda Strauss in the first Doctor Fate miniseries.

What’s very interesting about Khalid being Doctor Fate is that even without the helm, Khalid’s magical abilities are to an extent he can see the fate of others. He can tell if they’re going to live or die.
He also has the power to deny those Fates, especially if they’re being perpetrated by magical beings whose power over the fate of others isn’t “legit” in the sense they aren’t actually like cosmically mandated to doing so like a death god.
It’s very different because most other Dr. Fate don’t have explicit abilities of such a nature. It’s things like this that makes Khalid very Doctor Fate-y without needing the helm, which is a huge crutch in many ways with other past incarnations.

If Ahsoka sensing the impending Order 66 scene is any indication, it shows Mace Windu had a profound connection to the Force because it’s his death that is the very first sign of trouble. So much so there’s people like Ahsoka (whom has a conflicted relationship with him) who become physically disoriented when her senses explicitly senses Windu being slain.
Other characters like Jarro Tapal sense this too just before Palpatine expresses Order 66. Now there’s also the fact that Order 66 reaches people at different times and whatnot but a lot of Jedi got the sense something is wrong even before the first broadcast & it’s Windu dying & Anakin turning.
Given most Jedi in canon don’t even know Anakin died or turned without real conclusive evidence and Windu was a widely regarded champion, it’s easy to say that for many Jedi, Windu’s death was sensed all about. Likely because it’s at the fulcrum of a tipping point between the light & dark side.

One of my most favorite things about Leía~.
We don’t talk about Leia killing Jabba enough. Her grandmother and father were born into slavery. Her blood was that of the desert sand and the shackles of bondage. Leia was never more a Skywalker than the day she strangled her slave master with the very chains he used to bind her. The daughter of Anakin Skywalker was the one who killed Tatooine’s most notorious slaver, and I find that really beautiful.
