Author Octavia E. Butler Author (1947–2006)

Known for blending science fiction with African-American spiritualism. Her novels include Patternmaster, Kindred, Dawn and Parable of the Sower.

Writer Octavia Estelle Butler was born in Pasadena, California, on June 22, 1947, later breaking new ground as a woman and an African American in the realm of science fiction. Butler thrived in a genre typically dominated by white males. She lost her father at a young age and was raised by her mother. To support the family, her mother worked as a maid.

As a child, Octavia E. Butler was known for her shyness and her impressive height. She was dyslexic, but she didn't let this challenge deter her from developing a love of books. Butler started creating her own stories early on, and she decided to make writing her life's work around the age of 10. She later earned an associate degree from Pasadena City College. Butler also studied her craft with Harlan Ellison at the Clarion Fiction Writers Workshop.

To make ends meet, Butler took all sorts of jobs while maintaining a strict writing schedule. She was known to work for several hours very early in the morning each day. In 1976, Butler published her first novel, Patternmaster. This book would ultimately become part of an ongoing storyline about a group of people with telepathic powers called Patternists. The other related titles are Mind of My Mind (1977), Wild Seed (1980) and Clay's Ark (1984). (Butler's publishing house would later group the works as the Patternist series, presenting them in a different reading order from when they were chronologically published.)

In 1979, Butler had a career breakthrough with Kindred. The novel tells the story of an African-American woman who travels back in time to save a white slave owner—her own ancestor. In part, Butler drew some inspiration from her mother's work. "I didn't like seeing her go through back doors," she once said, according to The New York Times. "If my mother hadn't put up with all those humiliations, I wouldn't have eaten very well or lived very comfortably. So I wanted to write a novel that would make others feel the history: the pain and fear that black people have had to live through in order to endure."

For some writers, science fiction serves as means to delve into fantasy. But for Butler, it largely served as a vehicle to address issues facing humanity. It was this passionate interest in the human experience that imbued her work with a certain depth and complexity. In the mid-1980s, Butler began to receive critical recognition for her work. She won the 1984 Best Short Story Hugo Award for "Speech Sounds." That same year, the novelette "Bloodchild" won a Nebula Award and later a Hugo as well.

In the late 1980s, Butler published her Xenogenesis trilogy—Dawn (1987), Adulthood Rites (1988) and Imago (1989). This series of books explores issues of genetics and race. To insure their mutual survival, humans reproduce with aliens known as the Oankali. Butler received much praise for this trilogy. She went on to write the two-installment Parable series—Parable of the Sower (1993) and Parable of the Talents (1998).

In 1995, Butler received a "genius" grant from the MacArthur Foundation—becoming the first science-fiction writer to do so—which allowed her to buy a house for her mother and herself.

you know what makes enid such a lovable character? she’s deceptively complex, and the specifics make her so fucking precious. LET ME PROVE MY THESIS.

when enid is first introduced in the show, we might be inclined to think that she’s merely a shallow representation of the polar opposite of wednesday—colorful, peppy, social, loud. but she’s so much more than just wednesday’s antithesis. and you see that from their very first interaction.

enid, clearly excited and optimistic about meeting her new roommate, rushes up to greet her with a huge smile and outstretched arms (already, a sign of her kindness). but the very second she realizes wednesday doesn’t want to reciprocate, she holds off. this might not seem like a big thing, but it’s extremely telling. for one, it shows us that before everything, enid respects wednesday’s boundaries. wednesday, who she doesn’t even know yet. and she continues to honor wednesday’s disinclination to hugs, repeatedly, until the final scene. it also indicates that she’s not ditsy or cluelessly abrasive like some other characters who share her disposition. enid is genuinely, thoroughly kind, and it’s striking.

however, as the scene continues and enid gives wednesday a tour of nevermore, it becomes clear that even though she is kind, she isn’t a one-dimensional people-pleaser. she doesn’t hesitate to give wednesday’s attitude right back to her. like when wednesday expresses annoyance over the name of the quad and enid tells her that “the whole snarky, goth-girl thing might’ve worked at normie school, but here, things are different,” and when wednesday shows disinterest in “participating in tribal adolescent cliches,” enid tells her to “use it to fill your obviously bottomless pit of disdain.” is enid sweet? yes. and is she (not so) subtly trying to impress her cute brunette roomie with her knowledge and interests? also yes. but what she’s not about to do is let wednesday sass her without matching her energy. it’s almost a playful kind of banter (i would say borderline flirtatious), and it’s one of the reasons wednesday is instantly drawn to her; enid isn’t afraid of her, or uncomfortable around her, or put off by her unfriendliness; instead, she’s able to interact with her in a way that keeps wednesday on her toes. this, combined with the way enid continuously respects her boundaries, is a dichotomy that wednesday finds irresistible, and it’s why she can’t not treat enid differently than everyone else. and it’s a big reason why she falls for her.

enid’s complexity only deepens when we discover that she can’t wolf out. we find out that she’s terrified of being alone, and as we get to family weekend, we see the dysfunctional dynamic she has with her parents. it becomes apparent that enid herself is a dichotomy; she presents herself to her peers as confident and bubbly and full of optimism, but the second she’s alone with her family, we see a glimpse of her truest self, who she is behind the mask—weary, sad, almost demure, responding to her mother’s criticism with a tired kind of acquiescence, “that’s me, a huge disappointment.” enid isn’t at all what we might have initially thought her to be, and to see her deal with not measuring up to her family’s standards makes her all the more authentic and relatable.

considering all of this, enid’s duplicity contextualizes her delicacy with wednesday in a way that is uniquely captivating. because enid has every reason to close herself off to other people, especially to her roommate who doesn’t even seem to like her, but she doesn’t. in fact, she goes above and beyond trying to befriend her—promising to keep her secret about nero, seeing her off with tyler at the harvesting festival, inviting her to multiple social events, expressing an interest in “bonding” when she took her dress shopping, organizing a birthday surprise for her, knitting her a snood in her signature colors, and even pulling one over on weems so that they could have a girl’s night out. so when she finds out that wednesday has deceived her, she’s rightfully upset and extremely hurt. during the fight scene, all of this comes out, and for the audience—much like for wednesday—enid’s anger is pain-inducing. we see the strength of her vulnerability in that moment, we see her reach the end of her rope, as it were, because deep down enid is just plain exhausted. and that’s what makes her really real. i see the humanity in her so clearly, and it makes me want to cry. it makes me want to reach through the screen and comfort her like wednesday couldn’t in that moment.

but as we know, enid comes back for wednesday. why? because even after everything, even after the betrayal and the snide remarks and the silence, she still wants to take care of wednesday. she still wants to be there for her, to protect her and be her friend. without waiting for an apology from the person who wronged her, she came back. and if that doesn’t make you love enid sinclair with all of your heart, nothing will.

Anyway,, saw a weyler saying that Enid may have seen Wednesday as prey in ep8 and Tyler could have potentially saved Wednesday from Enid.. and to that I have to say,

does this look like the face of a killer to you??!?! That is a SMILE if I’ve ever seen one. Girly was so proud of herself. She WANTED Wednesday to recognize her, that’s why she stopped. She WANTED Wednesday to acknowledge that she shifted, wanted Wednesday to know that she was protecting her. Like look at her. She STOPPED IN HER TRACKS while fighting a huge ass monster to fucking smile at Wednesday and be like “babe look omg I’m a real werewolf look look!!!!!!!!”

Candace: oh hello, Wednesday, Enid. Today is a tad chaotic. We need to clear out the meeting house and store away the props and artifacts. They are going to be using it to film a Netflix series. Or at least a 3 episode story.

Enid: aren’t you excited?

Candace: yes and no? Lou Anne put me in charge of the Goody artifacts. But we won’t be open for two to three months. And Lucas isn’t too happy about people coming to ‘visit the set’ later on down the road

Wednesday: that will be unfortunate. When I described the place as a ‘small town in Vermont’ and they picked my story? I did not expect them to actually look for a small town in Vermont let alone pick Jericho where my mind was when I wrote it

Candace: wait what? You wrote the script of this show they are filming?

Wednesday: the story. Not the screenplay. Lucky for you I did not know you then so there is no character based on you.

Enid: wait. It’s horror based and I’m in it right? The one scared of everything? I come out alive right?

Wednesday: I am not spoiling anything. You will have to watch it

Enid: WEDNESDAY!

Wednesday: -kissing Enid on the cheek- yes you live. You will recognize yourself as the others.

Enid: I love it! I can’t wait! I still want to be an extra!! Oh! Are there ghosts? Maybe Candace can be a ghost!

Candace: -laughing- oh my god! Is that Tom Burton? Is he involved in this? Is he directing?

Mr Burton was just casually walking about. Getting to know the town, the locals as he knew the production presence would disrupt things. He spotted a familiar face and approached

Mr Burton: Wednesday? What are you doing here? Production does start until the end of the month. Is your mother here?

Wednesday: the boarding school I attend is on the outskirts of Jericho.

Mr Burton: I see. This will make things a bit easier. Oh and Thames had to back out at the last minute so he will not be directing the second episode

Wednesday: Will you be taking over?

Mr Burton: unfortunately not. I did say I would be willing but Mr Gunn picked his own replacement and both Ms Rowling and Mr Johnson both agreed so I was outvoted. Although I am the main producer and director? Mr Johnson and Ms Rowling are the main financial backers other than the network. I even stated that ‘Miss Addams surely would NOT be onboard with this and would prefer I take on the director duties’

Wednesday: do I even ask?

Mr Burton: Teariki Waipapa

Enid: what the frick? They are aware this is a horror story?

Mr Burton: he wants the challenge

Wednesday: challenge of what? Turning my scary story into something laughable? I already had to put my foot down enough times with Ms Rowling to stop making my creatures less mindless and bloodthirsty or overly aggressive and vicious

Mr Burton: indeed.

Wednesday: your designs are ridiculous however I get that. You do not insist on turning a ferocious werewolf into a giant puppy or drooling flesh eating war dog. Will you be overseeing the post production?

Mr Burton: I will. I am sure Mr Johnson and Ms Rowling try to influence things there as well.

Wednesday: I do not wish any of my creatures to end up as a big muscular bully such as Mr Johnson

Mr Burton: understood. I will make you a photocopy of my script with my director notes I have made so far. Feel free to go over them and make your own notes. I will try to get Teariki’s as well. Who are your friends here?

Wednesday: this is my girlfriend Enid. I based Ellie on her. This is Candace. She is an actor here at Pilgrim World. She plays Goody Addams

Mr Burton: would the two of you like to be cast as extras?

Enid: I would!!

Wednesday: I have something to say about that. Do not by any means cast a person by the name Xavier Thorpe. I will send you a photo of him. And you may send anything you need to physically see like the scripts to Nevermore Academy, Wednesday Addams Ophelia Hall Tower Room

Mr Burton: noted. I will see you around. Your mother has sent me your phone number. Don’t hesitate to text me if you have questions, Wednesday

Mr Burton walked off.

Candace: oh my god. I can’t believe Tom Burton is in charge of directing your story! Is this for Tales From the Other Side? I absolutely loved the first season of stories!!

Wednesday: yes. My family had a good laugh watching. When they announced the contest over Thanksgiving last year and they wanted to up the horror my brother challenged me to write a story. When my story was chosen as one of the winners I had no idea they would be going into production so quickly.

Enid: I guess everyone involved was already on board and they just picked a winner they liked? Wait. There’s a creature right? It’s not the Hyde is it?

Wednesday: no. It’s sort of based on the Jersey Devil. I describe it as a kangaroo goat headed rat bat. Mr Burton made a really great hideous silly drawing of it. I absolutely loved it. Ms Rowling wanted to make it more kangaroo like, more cuddly. Mr Johnson wanted to make it really muscular and giant.

Candace: oh my god. I can make really scary screams! Maybe I can see if I can make the monster noises!

Enid: that would be so funny! Maybe? Wednesday! OMG. We should record her and make it the proximity alarm so when Xavier gets too close?
