FIND THE WORD TAG
i was tagged by @encrucijada (ty!!) and tried to challenge myself by not using anything from Lay Me Down, so these are all taken from what i've written for Burn The Stars (my sci-fi fantasy thats in perpetual planning hell lol)
my words were: necklace, sigh, dream & heavy
NECKLACE
No one could say that Anandi Alva was not talented. She could recite epic poetry from memory and tell you the name of an old world plant by the way it grew towards the light and slip into the faces of others as easily as slipping into water. But the dead girl was in possession of a holy name, a holy vantage point to the unguarded backs of the most influential the Colossus Rings had to offer, a holy collection of necklaces where each glittering gem was modelled after a specific star, and the Priory had no need for Anandi Alva in the face of that.
SIGH
“I deal in precision Silas,” Danny sighed, turning away from the pulsing emergency lights. “I only fail when I leave things to chance.”
DREAM
This is outside of her, controlled, soft, it washes easily away once she blinks and realizes that she’s sitting on grass with her back resting against the trunk of a tree, one leg drawn up, hands folded behind her head as if she’s been sitting there casually for a few minutes at most. For all she knows she has.
This is a dream.
HEAVY
“You have to stop saying things like that.”
Silas paused, halfway through tying his hair back into its ponytail. “Like what?”
“Us, we, when this is all over. If you keep it up I might start to think there’s a chance.”
“I think there’s a chance.”
“I know you do.” They made a fist and pressed it to the space between their eyes. It felt heavy. Everything had felt heavy for a very long time now.
i'll tag: @albatris @spideronthesun @strangerays @violets-in-her-arms-writes and anyone else who wants do it!!
your words are: slight, slip, silver and sharp

just a reminder to COMPLETELY boycott Eurovision this year; Azerbaijan and Israel, despite committing genocide, are STILL allowed to compete & have NOT been banned. by refusing to ban both countries, Eurovision is profiting off of the genocide of Palestinians and Armenians.
do not listen to the artists. do not pirate or stream the artists' music, and this applies to ALL the artists who are competing and performing this year. do not listen to the songs on ANY platform, do not give them ANY attention.
write to your broadcasters and tell them you REFUSE to watch the channels until they recognise the Armenian and Palestinian genocides & that you find it disgusting how they are allowing Eurovision despite Azerbaijan and Israel's entries.
do NOT give eurovision OR the competing artists ANYTHING but silence.
boycott ALL of eurovision.

i hope that the discussion about student protests does not get reduced to "privileged rich kids faffing around at an ivy league school." setting aside that tenuous claim, over the last week, protests have erupted over the entire country. a few days ago, riot police beat, pepper-sprayed, and arrested NYU faculty shielding students; protests started at the university of southern california when the admin cancelled the valedictorian's speech; encampments appeared at the university of southern carolina, UT dallas, the university of maryland, the university of new mexico, IUPUI, virginia tech, the university of virginia, the university of illinois, the university of north carolina — chapel hill, the university of pittsburgh, uc berkeley, the university of michigan — ann arbor, MIT, emerson, tufts, the university of rochester, rice, swarthmore, the new school, vanderbilt university, with students arrested; students protested or walked out at miami university, northwestern, temple, the 5 claremont colleges: pomona, pitzer, scripps, harvey mudd, and claremont mckenna, stanford, washington university in st louis, students were arrested at ohio state, students were confronted by riot police at cal poly humboldt, after which they occupied campus, students were arrested at the university of minnesota — twin cities, after which faculty walked out; and yes, there are protests at the other ivies, most notably yale, with students facing mass arests after encampments, but there is also an encampment at brown, protests appeared at cornell, princeton faculty issued a statement of solidarity while students are preparing an encampment, and harvard banned the undergraduate palestine solidarity committee. there are thousands of students who are protesting for palestine across the entire country, facing harassment, arrest, and suspension in return

if you're cringing at the genre conventions of the genre you are writing in then why the hell are you writing in it. either have something substantial to say about those conventions or shut the hell up! i will not cringe alongside you at superhero powers and spaceship battles and big eldritch worms and bone magic. i came to this story to SEE that shit and I don't appreciate it when an author tries to pretend they're above the very things they're selling themselves on

Just in case anyone was confused or concerned.
Drafting is a skill. And it's a skill you can learn. If you ever look at your first draft and go 'actually this is good' do not immediately go 'no it's can't be good it's a first draft'. If you've been writing for a while (like years) writing a draft that is perfectly serviceable and only needs some editing without a ton of cutting is like... fine.
I spend a lot of my time 'writing' and 'rewriting' drafts 6-10 times in my head and when they finally come out as my 'first draft' (or a second in some cases) it's already been through 2-8 revisions. The work has been done and the words I'm writing are the culmination of those revisions. I just didn't write it down.
Not all revisions have to take place in meat space or as text on a screen. Revisions happen as you play out scenarios over and over again in day dreams or bed time stories. Your first draft is not something that Must be conquered and tamed into something presentable. Sometimes you nail it because you've spent all the revision time already.
This is not something that comes to everyone. But it is something you can get good at. You do not have to agonize over a 5th rewrite if the first time you've put words to paper is already the 6th revision that's gotten better every time. There's a lotta 'you gotta suffer to make a book good' in writeblr I just don't agree with. You can just nail it the "First Time". Not every time. But you can.
