Inferiority Complex // Chapter 1 //
Tumblr media
"I'm sorry- I-I'm sorry, wait!"
He was roughly grabbed by his hair, held up into the air with his short legs dangling as he struggled in the much older boy's grip.
"How many times have I told you to stay out of my way, little man?"
The older boy tightened his grip on the tiny demon, causing him to whimper and struggle more. The goons behind his aggressor were snickering, finding the pathetic whelp's attempts at kicking the older boy hilarious.
"O-ow... please- p-put me down... I-I didn't mean to... I just-,"
The boy's grip tightened once more, causing the small figure to yelp.
"Just what? Forgot who's in charge around here? You should really get it through your thick skull already,"
The older boy turned sharply, throwing the small demon to the ground. The demon skidded a little, hitting his head on the rough, sharp gravel that covered the ground. He sniffled, staring up at his attackers, attempting to get up and run away, only to be kicked roughly in the side, tumbling down once again.
He curled up, his head bleeding, his sides aching as the boys approached, obviously ready to beat him to a pulp again.
"Same as last time? Till his face is bruised and swollen?" one of the boys asked. "You bet," the older one snickered, cracking his knuckles.
The little demon sniffled, shaking as one of his bullies stomped down on his tiny hand with their boot, causing him to yelp and whimper again, attempting to pull his hand out. The other two came around him to his back, grabbing onto his hair again and tugging at it roughly. The three laughed at him, enjoying his crying, bleeding face as they continued to hit and kick him.
His hand was ground down into the gravel, causing him to whine and sniffle, tears streaming down his dirty face as he was kicked in the side again. Over and over, his attackers hit him. He was beaten roughly and aggressively in his already injured side and head.
Eventually, it seemed they had finished their little game, leaving the tiny demon shivering and crying curled up on the ground. The older boy had his foot planted firmly on his back, keeping him down on the floor.
"You're so pathetic... no wonder you-,"
A sudden yell from behind cut off the older boy — someone the small demon couldn't make out through his burry, bloody vision.
"AGOTI!" he heard someone call his name, the pressure on his back suddenly relieved as he felt the wind whoosh past. Agoti's ears were ringing, and he could only make out two blurry figures beside him. One of his attackers being roughly beaten by a maroonish but familiar figure. The other two bullies approached the ongoing commotion, attempting to subdue the familiar figure, to which they dropped the first guy, turning and throwing a punch towards each of the other two.
Agoti only stared, shaking as the figure took on all three bullies easily and efficiently, repeatedly punching them in the face and chest before throwing them down and moving on to the next one. Again, Agoti shook, his eyes starting to shut as his vision started fading from the blood loss. Not long after, the figure dropped the last attacker. Agoti could barely see their figures lying on the ground, barely moving.
The maroon figure rushed over to him, kneeling next to him and sitting him up gently. Agoti could faintly hear them saying his name before they embraced him tightly, shaking. Agoti could barely move. Everything felt numb, and he could hardly see or breathe. But he shakily raised his arms, wrapping them around his savior, starting to sob uncontrollably, barely coming back to his senses.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, I should have been here sooner- I should have realized something was wrong-," His older brother said. He was talking fast, obviously panicked over what had just happened.
"A-Aldie... ," Agoti mumbled softly, shaking, his injuries starting to hurt again as he continued to cry, choking between sobs. "Shh... shh," his brother quietly shushed him."I-it's ok... we're gonna see dad... this isn't gonna happen again... I promise," he said.
"I promise I'll always be here to protect you, I promise... I won't let you get hurt ever again, I promise,"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A cracked rib and skull, several popped blood veins, more than a dozen cuts and scratches across his arms and face, and a horrible fracture in his hand. Solazar was furious.
When the two brothers got home, Aldryx explained what he had seen when he'd arrived, and Agoti explained as much as he could, considering his condition. Sol rushed Agoti to the hospital, bringing him in, to which he was brought into the emergency room for a check over to see what damage had been done.
Agoti was only 9, being brutally attacked and bullied by several kids who were much older and bigger than him. He had no way of fighting back or defending himself. Sol couldn't be sure how long it'd been happening, as Agoti never talked about it, but he figured it'd been going on for a while, and Agoti had been scared into staying silent about it.
Needless to say, Solazar pulled Agoti and Aldryx out of the school they were going to. Then, not long after, they moved away. It was understandable. For whatever reason, the boys hadn't been reprimanded for what they had done, and even if Solazar wanted to sue, he wasn't stable enough financially to take on a legal battle, at least not at the time. So it was simply a better option for the small family to move away, to somewhere safer, where Agoti wouldn't have to experience such severe bullying ever again. But deep down, they all knew this wouldn't be the last time.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Agoti!"
"AGOTI!"
Agoti jumped in surprise from his name being yelled, glancing up, finding a tall woman glaring down at him, her hands on her desk, fingers sprawled out. He blinked a few times as the guidance counselor huffed angrily, sitting down once more.
"You really should be paying attention!" she muttered, sighing. "This is why your grades are failing,"
Agoti sighed, narrowing his eyes and leaning back in his chair, the two front legs raising a bit above the carpeted floor as he pushed his foot against the floor. He watched as the guidance counselor went over her paperwork one last time before sighing and staring at him again. "As I was saying... you knocked out that poor boy's tooth!" "He hit me first-," "I don't care who hit who; you beat that young man and knocked out his tooth!" she shouted, slamming her fist down on her desk. She stared down at Agoti, one of the most troublesome students in Reeds High, a student whom she had seen several times in the past.
The counselor huffed, sitting down in her seat once more, silently sliding a few papers into the organizer under her desk. Agoti watched her, quiet. His white eyes narrowed as he silently began glancing around the room. There were a few stereotypical landscape pictures hung up on the wall, as well as a graduation photo from 2001. Agoti turned back to the counselor as she finished what she was doing.
With a soft sigh, she locked eyes with the problematic teen. "You should thank your lucky stars; the boy has already decided not to pursue any legal action. I understand your father can be quite...explosive...when it comes to the things you decide to do...and a lawsuit wouldn't look good on you," "Yeah yeah, whatever...," Agoti huffed, folding his arms and leaning back in his chair. The counselor let out a frustrated sigh. "I'm sending you home for the rest of the day. You are hereby suspended. Dismissed," she responded.
Agoti didn't say anything, just picking up his duffel bag and leaving the room, slamming the door behind himself.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The school hallways were packed with other students breaking for lunch. All the juniors and seniors Agoti walked past were chatting excitedly about the school prom, which would be occurring within the next few weeks. There were posters up, asking for those who'd be willing to DJ and play music, and many students were scrambling to get dates for the oncoming event. One of the few people who didn't have a date was Agoti. He never had a date for prom. He hated the yucky, lovey-dovey stuff and the many things others expected to ensue after a night of partying and drinking.
That didn't stop others from trying their luck on him, though.
"Hey, Goti! Wanna go with me to-," "No," "Agoti, are you free on-," "No thanks," "Would you be interested in-," "Fuck off, Cassandra,"
Walking through the hallways was easily the most annoying part of the school day for him. The notorious school bad boy, bad grades, good looks- he was popular, had charisma, and he even had an equally attractive older brother who was captain of the nearby college's football team. So naturally, he had everything a stereotypical high school girl wanted in that perfect 'bad boy.' Though, Agoti really wasn't into all that. Not at all. He didn't really love anyone. Aside from his family, of course.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finally, the front door was in sight. Agoti would finally be released from the hell that was the atrociously painted school building.
Though, just as Agoti reached for the door handle, planting his grip firmly around the cold metal, he glanced up, noticing an all-too-familiar face. The kid he'd gotten into an altercation with. He was staring towards Agoti with his shit-eating grin, a few of the older kids standing behind him. Agoti recognized them as part of the school's football team, a bunch of tall, muscular kids who were popular as well.
Agoti figured out pretty quickly why the kid had decided not to press charges on him for assault. Instead, he wanted to get back at Agoti a different way.
Agoti quickly left the school building, walking down the steps and through the front courtyard under the bright afternoon sun.
Dead branches and stray leaves littered the courtyard, the dead, leafless tree in the center of the concrete yard being the culprit of the mess. Around the tree were a few metal benches, the paint chipping off and revealing the rusting metal below. Agoti silently set his bag down on one of the benches, sitting down and pulling out his paper lunch bag, cause yes, Sol still gives him his lunch in a cute little paper bag. Considering he was being sent home, he figured he'd eat his lunch on the bench before Solazar came to pick him up.
The damp, floury, papery-tasting whole-grain bread mixed with the tangy taste of tomato and turkey made the sandwich all the more...yucky. The taste and texture of whole-grain bread just made Agoti's tongue reflexively curl up.
"Ugh...," he muttered softly, retracting his previous decision of eating his lunch. Instead, he'd just get something when he got home. If he'd be allowed to, that is.
Knowing Solazar, he'd probably ground him for a month for getting suspended again. Agoti groaned at the thought, being cooped up in his room with nothing to do, all because he roughed some stupid kid up a bit (Though as he thought about it, being in his room wouldn't be so bad-)! The kid hit first anyway- why didn't he get punished?
Stupid.
As Agoti sat quietly on the bench, waiting for his possibly enraged and exploding father to pick him up, his phone dinged from within his duffel bag. Hesitantly, he unzipped the pocket, reaching inside and pulling out his phone, noticing '1 new text from: Aldryx.'
"Here we go," Agoti groaned, unlocking his phone and reading the relatively lengthy text from his brother.
'Hey. Dad's busy with work, so he called me and told me to come and pick you up. What the hell did you do this time?'
Agoti sighed, staring at the somewhat cracked screen for a moment before texting back.
'Knocked a kid's tooth out.'
He paused for a moment before adding;
'And called him a dickhead. And a lowlife.'
Not even a minute later, he got a text back.
'And why did you do that?'
'Because he was saying how I was stupid for having low grades. And how I wouldn't go anywhere in life.'
'Agoti...'
'He hit first!'
There was a pause after that last text.
'We'll talk in the car. I'm almost there.'
With a soft huff, Agoti shoved his phone back in his duffel bag, leaning back on the bench and staring up at the gray sky. The town was always dreary this time of year. The end of winter wasn't a very lovely season anyway, especially with how rainy it got. Agoti hated this time of year in general, both because of school events and awful weather. God, how much he'd give to drop out of high school.
Agoti was considering just walking home when he heard the door of the school open. The old metal swinging forward's familiar 'click' and rusty 'creak' were incredibly recognizable. As Agoti glanced over, he realized that maybe he should just walk home. Or run home cause the people coming out of school and walking towards him were the football kids that were all standing behind the guy he beat up. So Agoti figured this was their idea. Catch him alone outside while he's waiting for someone to pick him up.
"Shit...," Agoti muttered. He couldn't take on like four guys who were all about twice his size and all relatively fit. It was like he was back in primary and middle school. God, he really hated primary and middle school.
Agoti was snapped out of his thoughts by his brother calling his name. He was still sat down on one of the metal benches in front of the high school. He turned to the street, noticing his brother's car parked just in front of the courtyard. Aldryx was in the driver's seat, motioning for Agoti to get in. Taking a brief glance at the still approaching jocks, Agoti didn't hesitate.
He jumped up, grabbing his duffel bag and running over to his brother's car, opening the door and jumping into the front seat beside his brother. The jocks all stopped, watching as the car took off down the road, disappearing over the nearby hill.
Agoti watched out the window as the jocks vanished behind them. Then, after a moment, he sighed, leaning back in his seat and stretching. "Good timing," he commented, glancing at his brother. "Put your seatbelt on," Aldryx replied simply, keeping his eyes on the road as he pulled onto the main street of the town they lived in.
Reedsville was a dull, dreary town that had nothing special about it. It was boredom central. There weren't even any good fast food places around, only some shitty pizza place that always burned some part of whatever you ordered. Agoti and his family had moved there after he got hospitalized from the bullies at his old school. Solazar seemed to think that the more uninteresting and empty a town was, the less likely it would be to have violent teenagers wandering around. But, boy, was he wrong, at least according to Agoti.
"So," Aldryx huffed. "So...?" Agoti repeated, glancing at his brother. "Explain exactly what you did, dumbass!" Aldryx replied, continuing to drive down the road, stopping at a red light. Agoti huffed, rolling his eyes. "I already told you. Some asshat junior was telling me how I'd get nowhere in life with my horrible grades," he states. "So you punched him?" Aldryx questioned. "He hit me first!" Agoti responded quickly, causing his brother to sigh and shake his head.
"This is the third time you've been suspended! This year! Please don't make me bring up the seven other times that happened while you were a freshman," Aldryx huffed. "Not to mention you've been held back once," "So?" Agoti asked. Aldryx scoffed. "SO?! What do you mean so?! There's no fucking way you're getting into college at this point; you're a fucking menace!" Agoti rolled his eyes again, pulling out his phone as Aldryx continued to go off. "I'm honestly surprised they haven't expelled you already," he stated. "I'm also surprised dad hasn't fucking killed you by now," he said, turning the steering wheel and slowing as they approached the street where they lived. It was a pretty empty street compared to some of the others; only two houses...and dozens of trees. Somewhat underdeveloped, but Agoti liked the solitude of it.
Aldryx snapped his fingers in front of Agoti's face. "Hellooo? Are you even listening to me?" he asked. Agoti shook his head, lightly smacking Aldryx's hand away. "I am, I am," he replied as Aldryx pulled into the driveway of their house. Aldryx sighed as he turned the car off. "What are you gonna do?" he asked. Agoti looked up. "Hm...?" he mumbled. "You're failing high school....your track record is horrible, so I don't think any colleges will accept you...," Aldryx mumbled, sighing and laying back on the front seat. "What are you gonna do with your life...?"
Agoti stared at Aldryx for a moment before sighing. "I dunno...," he paused. "I don't really wanna go to college...," "And why is that?" Aldryx asked. "Cause I just... you have to do so much pointless work... for another four years and... in the end you might not even get the job you want, and even if you do you probably won't enjoy it...," Agoti mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck. "And I dunno... I'd rather do something I love that I don't need a stupid degree for... instead of wasting another four years sitting around learning useless information and not getting the degree anyway cause I'm a bad student,"
Aldryx stared at him quietly before turning to face him a bit more. "And what is it that you love doing that you think will be enough to carry you in life?" he asked softly. They stared at each other quietly before Agoti looked away, shaking his head. "It's stupid-," "No, you got me interested now. I wanna hear it," Aldryx interrupted, giving his brother a soft smile. Agoti stared up at him, still hesitant as he thought of what he could say. "I guess... I wanna make music...," Agoti responded in a mumbled.
Aldryx tilted his head, curious. "As in, learn an instrument and start a band?" he asked. "Or sing," Agoti answered quickly. Aldryx laughed a little. "You do know you still gotta learn to do all that, right? Typically, learn it in college?" he says. Agoti rolled his eyes. "I can teach myself... I don't always need other people to tell me how to do stuff! They probably learned how to make music by learning it themselves-," he says, opening the car door and stepping out. "Or they went to college~!" Aldryx called teasingly as Agoti slammed the car door, turning and starting to walk up the steps to the house.
As Agoti reached the door, gripping the handle, Aldryx opened his car door and stepped out partially. "Hey, uh...," he paused. "I have to go somewhere, for boring college stuff. I'm probably not gonna be back till around the time dad gets back cause he's at work," he says. "So you have the entire house to yourself," "Ok," Agoti responded simply, pulling out the house key he had in his pocket and unlocking the front door. "Think you can handle being alone for 5+ hours, big guy?" Aldryx asked. Agoti rolled his eyes again, turning to face his brother. "I'm 19; I think I can take care of myself," he answered.
Aldryx laughed a bit. "If you keep rolling your eyes, they're gonna roll right out of your head!" he called teasingly, getting back in the car and starting it again. Agoti couldn't help but smile a bit, opening the front door and walking into the house as his brother drove off.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The house was a bit dark, the lights off... blinds drawn. As Agoti closed the door behind himself, staring into the entrance hall, he felt an overwhelming sense of discomfort... and sorrow. As much as he hated school... he had to admit, he dreaded heading home every day. It felt like the color had been drained out of every object in the house, and an overwhelming hollowness crept across Agoti's back as he silently took his shoes off, setting them by the door and walking towards the old, wooden staircase.
Each step up the rickety boards resulted in a long creak inching from the old wood, the weight of Agoti walking up them causing them to strain under even the smallest amount of weight. The landing around the middle of the stairs had a window, which overlooked the backyard. It was empty for the most part, just a short plain of fenced-in grass, and a tree. Agoti passed it by, feeling like his entire world had been a bit slowed by the black and white atmosphere the house gave off. It was so dreary and empty...and cold. The house was always cold, even in the summertime.
Agoti silently trudged down the hall, his feet feeling like they were dragging behind him as he quietly made his way to his room. He decided he just wouldn't eat till dinner...having lost his appetite the moment he stepped in the house.
Slowly, he pressed his hand against his wooden bedroom door, painted black with a sign on the doorknob that read, 'Agoti's room; KEEP THE FUCK OUT!'
Agoti stared at the sign for a brief second before taking a deep breath and pushing the door open, being met with a long creak, before stepping into his surprisingly neat room. His bed wasn't made, the windowsills were covered in papers and books he hadn't touched in months, and his desk was cluttered with water bottles and old cans of soda...but the floor was picked up, and the shelves were relatively organized. His closet, which had no doors and contained his dresser, was dark and shadowy, easily the darkest part of the room when the lights weren't on.
Agoti closed the door behind him, shuffling over to his desk, tossing his duffel bag onto his bed, and sitting down silently in his somewhat comfortable swivel chair. He turned his PC on, deciding he'd enjoy the last few hours of computer time he had before Solazar inevitably grounded him. After a few seconds, the monitor blinked on, to which Agoti began doing what he always did. He opened his audio visualizer program, as well as his audio software.
As Agoti settled down in his seat, he couldn't help but shiver a little, glancing at the cloudy window beside his desk. His home wasn't necessarily a bad place, but...Agoti didn't really like being there, especially being there alone. The old, creaking house seemed to overwhelm him, and he was honestly a little scared of it. The atmosphere was so gloomy...and Agoti honestly didn't feel very safe there.
The only room Agoti liked to be in when he was alone was his bedroom. His safe space. So as he silently worked away on his music projects, he only felt anxiety as his mind and vision faded to black.
