Sometimes I get mad at Wit for spending way more time with Kaladin than Shallan bc I think Shallan could really really use some hoid storytime but actually it makes sense. Wit will tell Kaladin “oh yeah im from another planet” and he goes “ok” but if he tells shallan he knows about a new kind of moss???? Followup questions. he just doesnt wanna deal with the curious child

Questioner: What's a character you thought would be more liked or popular, if you have one?
Brandon Sanderson: Oh boy, I don't know about that. I mean, I do think that the original version of Chet, from Cytonic, people would like more, and they HATED him, which is why I ripped him out and rewrote the book entirely.
That's one of the worst reactions I've had to a character - but, of course, that why I have beta reads, and alpha reads. When I flub up that big, then I want to know it before the book comes out, right?
Generally I have a pretty good instinct.
And it's odd, in book series, if you have multiple viewpoints, there will always be more variance in what people think of the characters. For instance, in Skyward, generally the characters are just not as divisive.
But in Elantris or Stormlight, where the character you love - other characters are pulling you away from, to tell their stories - you will generally, whoever that character is that you love, resent the other ones a little bit more than you would in a single-viewpoint narrative.
But that does make people kind of like the character they like even more, it's one of those things.

Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.

abstract and modern art haters are sooo snobby like klein literally Created an entirely new pigment and then painted a canvas in a way where the brush strokes wouldn't be visible. the insinuation that people with no skill could reproduce that is so annoying because unless you are skilled at color mixing and painting you definitely couldn’t lmao

i think star wars only works because george lucas was so much better at casting actors than he was terrible at writing dialogue and giving acting directions. like for the OT, he found a pot dealing fuckboy, a scion of hollywood royalty, and the kindest young man around, and was like "great, roll camera," and when they asked, "how do you want this acted?" he just looked at them blankly like "acting?? why do you need to act?? just stand there and be you, and say the lines, fast and intense, thank you..." and somehow their charisma did in fact carry the film.

Sometimes I wonder what portion of authors who write transhuman-themed sci-fi started doing the "random chapter from a wildly incongruous viewpoint" thing because it's become customary in the genre, versus what portion of authors who write transhuman-themed sci-fi got into the genre in the first place because they love to head-hop and wanted to expand their options.
Like, sure, let's have a chapter from the viewpoint of the coffee machine. Why not. Apparently sapient coffee machines are a thing in this setting – it's not even metaphorical, it's straight up diegetic that the coffee machine has political opinions. The coffee machine is not a significant character, it never interacts with the main cast, and its viewpoint will never be revisited, but getting its perspective is essential to the narrative.
