WARNINGS. the story takes place during harry potter and the deathly hallows, so the events mentioned in this drabble are canon. you don't necessarily have to have read the books/watch the movies to understand what's going on but it might provide some bg info(?) + swearing!

A comfortable silence enveloped you and Doyoung as you two stood idly in the middle of the Room of Requirement, the famous Mirror of Erised in front of you two. You heard much about it, from both your headmaster Dumbledore and your friend Harry Potter.

It wasn’t any of your intentions to find the said Room or the Mirror. But the Carrows were ruthless against students who were either not part of Slytherin or not purebloods.

As Head Girl from the House of Slytherin, and considering your pureblood status, Neville Longbottom deemed you to be the best option to scour the school and find a suitable place for your fellow students to hide from the two professors.

Doyoung, your boyfriend and Head Boy from the House of Ravenclaw, insisted on accompanying you on this mission. Both of you wished to find a safe place for the students to hide from the Carrows, and that was how the Room of Requirement appeared.

You hadn’t thought much about it, just hoping to find a hideaway. Perhaps that was why such a generic room appeared in front of you two.

“Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi,” Doyoung read the inscription before translating it. “I show not your face but your heart’s desire.”

Your eyes squinted at the mirror, wondering what exactly it would show you. With what could possibly be the Second Wizarding War happening outside of Hogwarts walls, your missing friends, and the loss of security at where you thought was the safest place in the world, there was much you desired.

You quickly stole a look over at your boyfriend, who seemed to bear the same scrutiny as you for the mirror, before a look of curiosity took over his face. You tried not to snort at him. Typical Ravenclaw.

“What do you see?” you asked him, curious.

Doyoung turned to you and gave you a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. You knew that the past few months had been more than difficult for him, and yet, here he was, still trying to pretend to be strong in front of you. At that thought, the mirror shimmered and finally revealed what you desired the most.

It showed you and Doyoung growing old together and sending your children off to Hogwarts on the 9¾ platform, and your heart broke the tiniest at the vision the mirror showed you.

You knew that it was intrinsically inherent for human nature to desire something greater than one’s own self; meaning that an event wherein the mirror fails to carry out its intended purpose rarely, if at all, happens. With the numerous events happening, you wouldn’t – shouldn’t – be surprised that your deepest desire was one that could not be easily fulfilled.

Doyoung took your hand in his and squeezed it tightly.

“What’s wrong?” you asked him as you gently squeezed his hand back.

“Just…” he sighed and his dark orbs stared right at you, unflinching. “If the choice comes down to my life or yours, I’m always going to choose yours.”

You didn’t understand why he was telling you this. You shook your head at his words, almost erratically. “No, you take those words back. You can’t just say that. You promised – we promised to each other that we were going to get through this together. What happened to that?!”

Doyoung pulled you into a tight hug, hoping to calm you down a little.

“Of course I’m keeping my promise,” he reassured you. “But just in the event that something does happen and we’re forced to pick, I will always pick you.”

“You’re fucking stupid for saying that,” you mumbled, your head buried in his chest. “No way am I even going to let you make that dumb decision. I’ll fight Voldemort, if I have to.”

A moment of silence passed while you two spent it in each other’s arms, not knowing when exactly you would have this private time to yourselves again. It didn’t take long for Draco Malfoy, your fellow prefect, to look for you.

You sighed. Draco was persistent.

“You should go,” Doyoung mumbled.

You nodded in agreement. You turned one last time to Doyoung, who stayed behind so that you two wouldn’t get caught together, and he gave you a half-smile when you were about to leave the Room of Requirement.

“I love you,” you said. “You know that, right?”

Doyoung perhaps didn’t expect you to say those words to him at the moment. You were not a person of much words and preferred to show your love through actions, and Doyoung knew that.

He chuckled under his breath and shook his head, knowing he had never been able to keep up with you ever since the start of your relationship. Doyoung nodded determinedly. He then gave you a genuine smile – the most genuine you’d seen in a while – and said,

“Always.”

Another normal thing to see is the number of doctors, nurses, and techs rushing in at 6:00 am, when the sun barely breaks through the horizon. They rush to their locker rooms with their sorry excuses of breakfast in hand, grouping together for small conversations, which is also an extremely normal thing. The interns flock together as do the residents with the higher power. The attendings nod at each other before entering their offices with charts to go through. Everything is equally chaotic and as normal as a teaching hospital would be.

The one abnormal thing about this particular morning is that Dr. John Suh—the attending neurosurgeon of SNU Hospital—did not enter the grounds with you. 

Everyone knows about his relationship with the beautiful second-year resident intern. Everyone hears the gossip. So when you don’t come in together, people notice.
