staying at a hotel from the perspective of a housekeeper
hotel housekeepers tend to clean anywhere from 15 to 50 rooms a day, so here's a sweet little list if you want to make our jobs a smidge easier!
keep in mind, not all hotels are created equal and these things may vary. this is all taken from my own personal experience as a housekeeper over the past several years and may not be universal
towels!
you don't have to use a new towel for every single thing, I promise
if you do get new towels, please give us your old ones so we can get them washed and back on the shelf
keep them in an obvious spot (pile on the ground) so we know which ones you're done with. and on that note-
consolidate!
it's very simple to make sure All your used towels are together and all your trash is in the trash can.
if you have a lot of trash, lots of us keep big trash bags on hand. all you need to do is ask :]
a lot of people like to leave towels in the tub. that works well unless you have a lot, then it's better to put them on the floor
tip!
quite a few people don't realize you can tip housekeepers and we definitely appreciate it.
some hotels (especially by airports or major interstates) have housekeepers work in teams, so leaving a tip easily divisible by two is helpful but not required.
keep it clean!
this may seem obvious, but I wanted to drive it home
if you know something will be messy, please just don't
for example, if someone has to spend an extra 5 minutes cleaning out every microwave because people decide not to use a plate with their hot pockets, that adds up to an extra hour of work at the end of an average day
on top of that, please Do Not eat in bed. the sheets and duvets are white and the stains are very obvious and very painful
check out
pay attention to when checkout time is (usually it's 10am or 11am, ask if you aren't sure)
when you do check out (especially earlier in the morning), pay a visit to front desk and let them know. it lets us know the room is empty which helps in many ways (e.g. some hotels send people ahead of housekeepers to strip the vacant rooms)
Do Not Disturb sign!
please. I am on my knees begging you to please please please remember to take the do not disturb sign off of your door when you check out
when someone forgets, it means we usually can't even knock on the door until checkout time rolls around
to put that into perspective, if I start knocking on doors at 9am, I can't knock on a DND door for another 2 hours. that means the sheets don't get down to laundry until well after the first round of linen collection
please just take the little card off your door
sheets!
this is pretty simple. just take the blanket or duvet off the bed and set it on whatever chair is available, then take off the flat and fitted sheets plus the pillowcases
it only takes a couple minutes even if you don't really know what you're doing
obviously you Do Not Have To, it's not your job. but if you want to, it helps a lot
final notes
obviously I'm just one person and hotels vary from place to place, but hopefully these things are useful to you! just remember, most hotel employees are underpaid and overworked. we are not your parents and we are not paid enough to be your babysitter.

I love you robots and artificial intelligence with mental illness. I love you repression being depicted as literally deleting archived data to preserve functionality. I love you anxiety attacks being depicted as a system crashing virus. I love you ptsd being depicted as an annoying pop-up. I love you anxiety disorder being depicted as running thousands of simulations and projected outcomes. I love you artificial beings being shown to be human via their own artificiality.
