     he raises his hands up with a shrug, as if to say what ?? “ i think that’s about as mushy as it gets, no ? if you’re expecting an i love you, you better be on your deathbed — which, we established we don’t want — or get me blackout drunk. ” he knew how to make his love known without actually saying it out loud, quite the specialty of alex morgan. it was as if he was scared of the words, while at the same time backing them up instead with his actions. but he really hoped that arielle knew well enough just how much she meant to him, in such little time, too. he scoffs at the diplomatic answer of kayn, “ he hates me because i know how to get under his skin. ” he says, as if kayn didn’t know how to do the exact same to him. what does it say about them, then, if they were deep under each other’s skin ? was it really just blind hatred, or something else ? alex never stopped to think about it, nor does he ever want to. 

    it was nice to get out on the water, really — he never did it enough. for a man who wasn’t a big fan of beaches and the summer time, he didn’t seem to be in a rush to run off and escape magnetic island, either. no matter how appealing any other cities or places sounded… it was like he was grounded here, his roots stuck to the soil. “ you know, i can set you up with robbie — he’s a good guy, and i’m sure he would be happy to make your boat… not explode. and then maybe not bankrupt you for it. ” he grins, taking a sip of his beer. he knew better than to make offers on robbie’s behalf, but he knew the kind soul that man had on him.  

“so you’re saying that all i need to do is get you blackout drunk and you’ll sing my praises? damn, i need to do that and tow you around town, so everyone sees what a gem i am,” arielle declared with a grin. they hadn’t really known each other for very long, but ari knew that alex was a true friend. she’d go far to keep him safe. she supposed that she could show her affection too - even if he did call her a dickhead. “but then i guess half the island already knows i’d punch someone and probably get my ass kicked for you, so maybe your drunk praises won’t do much.” that was her kind of declaration of love. “do you now? i thought nothing could get under the vampire’s skin,” ari commented with a little shake of her head. “you make it sound like he’s your arch nemesis or something. calm down and drink your beer, batman.” arielle leaned back and put her feet up, rocking the boat a little as she did so. she opened up a beer and took a long sip from it. “but robbie is intimidating as fuck, i swear i have never seen the bloke smile once. what would i even talk with him about?” she whined like a child. she was sure that she’d find a way to connect to him somehow if she tried hard, but even a low price would be a big chunk of her small budget. “also, we have just sailed a few kilometres and you’re not dead, are you? so the motor is working great!”

“ c’mon, let’s do something fun. i’m taking any ideas. a drinking game, strip poker, karaoke, skinny dipping, whatever the fuck your heart desires. “

arielle almost wanted to say kayn was her friend too, but she supposed that was not really the full truth. she just considered him her roommate, a roommate could be many things, she supposed. a friend, foe or just some ghostly presence in your life. sometimes kayn felt like all wrapped into one. that did not mean they could not have fun once in a while. “i do not feel like going out again, you’ll do just fine,” she replied with a shrug. ari considered his suggestions. “half of those options involve us stripping down, kayn. you’re that keen to see me naked, are you?” she remarked with a raised eyebrow, her tone of voice teasing. “it’s too cold to skinny dip, your bits will fall off. and i’ll just embarrass you at karaoke.” she was feeling adventurous though, so instead she came up with another plan. “fine, we can do strip poker, but let’s make it spicy, shall we?” ari sat up straight and sent him a challenging look. “strip poker but every time we take a piece of clothing off, we also have to take a shot and do truth or dare.” some nights, she was just in a mood to let it all burn. there were nights meant for reason, but most nights were meant for bad decisions. these quiet hours were her time to feel alive. “you’re in?” she asked with a cheeky smirk plastered on her lips.

happiness is contagious clearly since he can’t help but mirror her joy. “aye! props to you and youtube… god knows if i had it when i was in middle school i would have gotten GOOD grades.” lucas relied on the website for pretty much everything, from new exercise routines to cooking; he even learned how to properly clean an oven last week. it took a few hours but no one can say it isn’t spotless now. “might as well just add that to your resume, clearly you have the talent.” 

arielle was delighted when the stranger matched her energy. “i know! i mean they even have these educational videos on chemistry and philosophy with cute little animations now. i’m so jealous of students, we had to watch low quality vhs tapes on this big lumpy television - and they were all so dull.” ari hated the thought of school, so it might have been a slight exaggeration to say she was jealous. but students today had more options than she had, they were not forced to sit with a book for hours and hours to learn the subject. “true, that i’m able to fix something after trying for an hour while watching a ten-minute video is truly an achievement,” she chuckled, always quick to make fun of herself. ari stood up and reached out her hand to him. “i’m arielle, most people just call me ari, it’s nice to meet you.”

     “ me ? a bad influence ? never. ” he exaggerates, talking loudly and sarcastically before a grin crept onto his lips. alex lets out a sigh, tilting his head to the side as he gives her a disappointed look, “ ari, please don’t ever spew bullshit like that again. you’re practically the… new gem of this island. come on, dickhead — you’d be missed. ” alex’s affection, of course, came with a bunch of insults — it was a form of a love language, was it not ? alex lets out another sigh, yet nods his head along. “ that’s fair. i still don’t buy it, about kayn… how do you accept scum of the earth like that ? and that’s coming from me, ” yet, he grins again at her offer, easily swayed by arielle and the promise of alcohol. “ don’t make promises you can’t keep, weaver… but let’s go. i like my odds on this one. ”

arielle could not help but let out a laugh. “a dickhead gem, am i?” she repeated with a grin. “you truly are the modern shakespeare, mate.” even while making fun of alex, she was grateful for his words. the line between freedom and loneliness was blurred, it was hard to know when you had gone too far - and to ari, not being missed by anyone would be a step too far. she was not a robot, she needed some human connection. arielle was a bit surprised by the depth of alex’ dislike, he seemed like a bloke who was hard to piss off. “oh boy, you guys really hate each other, huh?” she had heard similar things from kayn as well. ari had never really asked for the full story of the animosity between them, but she had a feeling that she would hear different versions of the same story. it was best not get too caught up in the details of their feud. “kayn can be cool when he wants to be. i guess he just never gave it a shot with you.” yes, that was quite diplomatic, she decided. a wide smile appeared on her lips as alex got into her boat. she had not really meant to go anywhere, content with just chilling in the marina with alex and a few beers, but she was not going to correct him on that. “see, there’s my reckless alex,” arielle beamed before putting a cold beer into his hand and turning on the motor. it spluttered a little but then whirred as it normally would. they chatted a bit while ari steered them out of the marina and to one of her favourite spots. it was a cove-like spot on the water, very close to one of the less visited beaches on magnetic island. she killed the motor so they could enjoy the quiet for a moment. “you know, i can’t really afford to have this boat,” ari admitted while opening a beer for herself. “but i cannot live without it either. so that includes sketchy repairs and complicated youtube tutorials. and you know what’s funny? i used to have a much bigger boat, it was pristine and with the best tech - and yet i love this piece of crap more than i ever did the old one.”
