this is for those who despair over seeing ships or tropes that make them uncomfortable while they do their little scrolly-scroll on ao3, acting like they aren’t responsible for their own internet experience

ANTI-CAPITALIST AFFIRMATIONS
i am allowed to spend my time creating things, even if they are not beautiful.
there is no such thing as a "real job." all forms of work are real and valid.
there is nothing that i need to accomplish to be worthy. i am already worthy.
doing nothing is good for my soul.
i am not defined by what i produce.
my worth cannot be measured by my paycheck, my job title, or a list of professional or academic achievements.
i do not need to monetize my hobbies, it is enough to spend time doing something i love.
i will not let society decide what success looks like. i can define what successful life looks like for me.

Life Of A Highschool Vampire Chapter 10: Gym Rat
Requested by Kekegirl30 on Archiveofourown
Summary: After many requests from his sister and finding nothing better to do, Kai goes to the gym, and among the stench of bacteria, sweat, and body oils Kai picks up the stink of a filthy rat...
****************
Kai barely managed to suppress a disgusted hiss as his nose was assaulted by the robust odors of the Best Body Studio as he entered the building. The only reason he was even in a place like this was that that brat he called a little sister had finally worn him down. Almost every letter he got from her was filled with pleas for him to send some pictures of the hot guys at his school. But he couldn't blame her. They grew up in a humongous castle in the middle of a giant valley filled with forests and mountains.
The nearest village was at least a two-hour bat flight.
That paired with two extremely over-protective parents and her emerging teenage hormones would probably drive Nya into madness. So, mainly to shut Nya up, Kai 'borrowed' a camera from Jay and headed for the Best Body Studio. This studio had a rather basic set-up, including essentials such as a bench, some dumbbells, and resistance bands that could still provide a great workout. Other equipments the gym had were training benches, dumbbell sets, barbell sets, kettlebell sets, pull-up frames and bars, treadmills, stationary bicycles, and rowing machines.
At the other side of the gym from the entrance Kai could see a set of double doors that led to a dance studio.
Like most forms of aerobic or cardio exercise, dancing had many health benefits, including weight loss. This gym offered seven forms of dance that would help people to lose weight. These dance forms were Zumba, hip hop, belly dancing, freestyle dancing, pole dancing, ballet, and ballroom dancing. Kai might have been tempted to sign up for a dance class if it wasn't for the foul smells. As you entered the gym, it was easy to be drawn further in by the scents that invigorated to get those juices flowing for weight lifting.
These included vibrant citrus notes of orange, lemon, lime, and peppermint.
That quickly changed, however, when you left the front lobby and entered the main exercise area. The primary culprits of this stink were bacteria, sweat, and body oils, which built up inside synthetic fabrics and caused a literal stink. In addition to the subjecting gym apparel to those large quantities, the fabric the athletic outfits were made from was another odor contributor. Choosing to breathe through his mouth, Kai walked through the gym, looking for the perfect subject for a secret photoshoot.
It wasn't a busy day at the gym, so there weren't a lot of options.
But Kai didn't mind the lack of people. He hated being in crowded places and these photos wouldn't be for him. Nya would have to accept and deal with whatever he sent her. All of a sudden, Kai found himself freezing when his amber eyes locked onto the very muscular body of Cole Brookstone. He hadn't seen Cole since their brief meeting at the pet store. The human had his back to him as he lightly jogged on a treadmill, with the manacles of the chains jingling loudly like Christmas bells.
Kai could hear some of the other people in the gym snickering at the manacles, but Kai didn't look at them.
His eyes were fully focused on the raven-haired human in front of him. Cole was in dark orange shorts with a water bottle clipped to the side, and a tight, black tank top. He had AirPods in with rock music blasting out so loud that Kai was certain the noirette was going to go deaf. The young vampire was almost drooling as he paid close attention to how Cole's tank top wrapped around and stuck to his sweaty, toned body. Had Cole's skin always been that shiny or was it because of the sweat?
Just then Cole pressed a button on the treadmill and his jogging slowly stopped.
As Cole took a big gulp of the bottle, Kai began to panic. He wasn't ready to see Cole again and he didn't want to have to explain why he was here to his one-night stand/possible crush. Within the blink of an eye, Kai dashed to what he thought was an exit. As soon as the doors closed behind him, Kai relaxed and took a deep breath. Only to gag loudly and grip his nose tightly. It was like someone had ripped his nose off, set a fire inside the cavity, and then poured acid into it.
It was the familiar smell of garlic.
After Kai got over the shock, he opened his amber eyes and frowned when he saw that he was in a large kitchen. Then he remembered that this gym also offered lessons to teach people how to cook healthy meals. There were a few people in the class and they were all staring at him. That was when Kai noticed one was approaching him with a concerned look. The first thing Kai noticed about this stranger was his eyes. His eyes were bright blue, and his hair looked to be white and stood up straight in something like a crew cut.
He was wearing white pants and light grey shoes with a long-sleeved, cyan blue shirt under a thick, navy blue knitted vest.
He was also wearing a small, very shiny gold pin with the red letters of T.S.G engraved into it. Although his clothing was mostly hidden behind a bright pink and flowery apron. He looked to be around Kai's age, if not slightly older. Kai's eyes narrowed when he saw the small, gold cross hanging from this person's neck, but said nothing as he approached.
"Are you alright?" He asked warily.
"Yes, what's it to you?" Kai snapped impatiently.
"I didn't mean to offend you, I just noticed that you seemed distressed." The teen replied calmly and extended his hand for Kai to shake. "My name is Zane, are you here for the cooking class?"
"I'm Kai, and no, I was trying to leave but got turned around." He half-admitted, blushing at the memory of Cole's giant frame, but his scowl towards Zane never left his face. For some reason, being near this human upset his stomach.
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that; but if you are hungry you could try my dish; I could use an honest opinion and you seem like a person who speaks their mind." He smiled before heading to a counter and returning to a piping hot dish. Zane had made a perfect pan-roasted chicken with lemon-garlic green beans. He held it forward for Kai to take, but the vampire jumped back as if he had been burnt.
"NO! KEEP IT AWAY!" He all but screamed, startling everyone. Realizing this, Kai straightened up and cleared his throat. "S-Sorry, I'm allgeric to garlic." He added nervously. Something flashed in Zane's eyes, but it went unnoticed as he took a step back and put the dish down.
"I apologize, I didn't know that."
"It's alright, no harm done." He dismissed and started backing up towards the door. "Look, this has been fun, but I've gotten better places to be than this dump." He huffed, knowing that it was a lie, but any place would be better than being near that dish of death or this teen who was making Kai more and more uneasy.
"I understand, but if you happen to change your mind the front desk can pro-" Zane started, only to be cut off when the brunette suddenly bolted away and out of the gym. Zane sighed heavily and got to work cleaning up his workstation and packing up the meal he made for later. After gathering up his things and bidding his classmates goodbye, Zane began the walk home, taking time to enjoy the warmth from the setting sun and evening breeze.
Halfway through his commute, but pale teen pulled out his mobile and made a call.
The person picked up after the first ring and Zane spoke coldly and as emotionless like a robot.
"I have found him."...

Past Lives Chapter 8
"DIE YOU PIECE OF TRASH!" I screeched and yowled as loud as I could while that demon with a lab coat tried to stab me. Nya had dragged me to the vet in a cat carrier to get my set of vaccinations so that way I can be an outside cat. I did want my independents, but I didn't want to be impaled by a syringe for almost as long as I am. There was also another problem. I overheard Jay and Zane talking about having me fixed! Despite my yowling, hissing, and meowing against it, Zane kept insisting it was for the best.
Ideally, a kitten should be neutered around puberty.
In male cats, this is between six to twelve months old. Male cats tend to reach sexual maturity, and therefore begin looking for a mate, between seven and twelve months old. Neutering can be performed from as young as four months old. I know that Zane was the one who argued the most for that damn operation, but I had a strong feeling that this was all Jay's idea. I was so getting the ginger idiot back for this, just like I did when he choose my name.
I knew the chance of them calling me Kai was zero.
But I hoped they would call me a cool cat name like Fire, Tiger, Flames, Thunder Cat, Blaze, Ninja, Dragon, Bite, Claw, or even something strange like Mr. Hiss. Or something ordinary like Henry, Jasper, Jake, Rusty, Red, Pine, Sun, Socks, Bandana, Bandit, or Skipper. I don't actually like those names, but they are way better than the one I got. I knew I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up. Jay decided for pretty much everyone give me the name Meowthra!
THAT ASSHOLE NAMED ME AFTER A FUCKING GIANT MOTH!
I did scratch up a few of his comics and took a small shit on his bed as payback though. Unfortunately, this ended up backfiring badly on me and Zane used that as more reason to have me fixed. Jay didn't even seem that bothered by my act of revenge either. He just cleaned up the mess and smiled as he scratched behind my ears and reassured me that everything was fine. This just pissed me off more, even if the scratching behind my ears felt very nice.
After ten minutes of running around the examination table, that bastard vet managed to get hold of me, and no matter how hard I struggled I couldn't get free.
"NO!" I yowled loudly as that insane vet stabbed that piece of metal into the back of my neck. That traitor Nya just chuckled with the vet at my useless struggles. It seemed that I had to master the sad, cute look, however, because as soon as Nya's eyes locked with mine she stopped laughing and carefully picked me up.
"Oh, you poor baby." She cooed as she started petting me and scratching under my chin, causing me to purr, despite the momentary pain.
"Alright, we'll let the little guy rest for a few weeks before the operation." The vet smiled as he packed the syringe away. "I would keep a close eye on him for the next couple of days and if you see anything abnormal, just give us a call."
"Thanks, doc, we appreciate it."
"NO WE DON'T!" I shouted as she placed me in the cat carrier, but they didn't pay me any attention. As Nya and that madman continued talking, I had to start thinking of a plan of escape, or a way to prevent them from taking the three things I don't think I can live without. The third one is my mojo...
****************
Notes: I am so, so sorry that this took so long and that this chapter is so short! I desperately wanted to get this update out but this was all I could squeeze out of my brain despite all the ADORABLE cat videos I have watched over the last few weeks. Seriously, guys, I tried and tried but no matter what I did, this was all I could come up with and I didn't want to keep you all waiting any longer. Nevertheless, I hope you all like this little update and again, I am so sorry it took so long and it's so short! Now then, you have all sent me many, many different names for Kai and I loved them all. Some of my favorites were Blaze, Dragon, and Lucifer; but my favorite by far was Meowthra, which was suggested to me by my good friend @Lava_Serpant over on Wattpad. If you do like my Ninjago stories, I would strongly suggest that you go and check them out. They also write stories for things like Encanto, Avatar, and I think they have a Marvel and DC crossover story. Thank you for taking the time to read this chapter and note, and I hope some of you will go and check out @Lava_Serpant's profile on Wattpad!

Oh boy, it's a long one but hear me out
If you happen to be reading this, i’m sorry to say that this will be my last post I make on ninjaheadcanons; that being said, remember me for what I did then and not what I’ll be remembered for now.
I mean, hey, if i’m being sentenced for a crime I may as well pled my case, right?
I do not condone any Lloyd ships nor do I support them, I never have.
When I first started this blog I did every single request that went into my inbox. Every single one. Wether it made me uncomfortable or not.
Why did I do it??
Cause I can’t say no to people. As silly as it sounds, I can’t and still can’t say no. That’s just who I am. It wasn’t until I finally drew the line did I start standing up against the ships I am not comfortable with.
And I'm going to be completely honest, I write for things I don't want to all the time. Whether it's Lloyd related or not, a good portion of the time I have written for things that make me uncomfortable.
Why? Because it made people happy. And that is all I ever wanted. By answering requests ANY request good or bad, It made people smile. I wanted to make people happy and I hope that I was able to do so❤️
And as for the transphobic thing, I AM A TRANS MALE; If I had written anything remotely transphobic, it must have been misconstrued.
There's so much more I want to say to you all; to all those who have supported me since the begin. New or old. You matter and you are all my friends and to some you are even family. You have made everything so amazing❤️❤️❤️
I should probably say that I’m not leaving cause of that list. I said, in the beginning, I write HCs because it was fun for me and unfortunately, it’s not enjoyable as it once was.
I did have so much fun though! It was so nice to be able to talk with you all and have conversations about au and all different kinds of headcanons!❤️❤️
I just thought I should address those things as I have gotten a ton of questions about it.
I’ve been planning on making this post for awhile but, thought that I should probably do it early.
This is my final goodbye, my friends.
Thank you for everything -Grim Valentine🌻

The Flame and the Dragon Chapter 36
Chapter 36: Let Him Go
The next morning, Kai wasn't sure whether to be relieved or disappointed that Cole was still holding him. The chill of his nightmares was still in his system and as long as they were with nothing to confirm or disprove them, any emotion other than worry made Kai sick with guilt. Carefully he unwound himself from Cole's arms and tail and sat with his feet dangling over the side of the bed. The bedsheet wrapped around his shivering frame.
"Are you still thinking about those nightmares?" A voice suddenly asked and Kai jumped and whirled around. Cole hadn't moved from the spot he was lying in but met the teen with an expression that read Kai's thoughts like they were the opened pages of a picture book.
"When did you wake up?"
"The second you started moving," He answered and positioned himself so he was next to his consort. "You're still thinking about those nightmares aren't you?" He asked, but in his mouth, it was a statement not a question and Kai knew it. Kai confirmed his suspicions with a nod.
"I just wish I knew how they were doing; I know they'd both love it here, just like I do." He smiled warmly as he thought about his family living here with him and Cole. Lloyd would be ecstatic to have a whole castle to explore. Kai knew Nya would love the architecture. Kai chuckled at the thought then sighed. "But I have no idea what's happening to them if I could make sure they were alright." He sighed as his voice trailed off. He turned baffled when he felt Cole take his hand.
Cole's eyes suddenly lit up with pride like a child who couldn't wait to share their accomplishment with their parents.
"I know how to do that." He smiled before he hopped off the bed and scooped up a handful of clothes. Harumi must have placed there while they were asleep. "Get dressed." He ordered and Kai obeyed. Once they had donned Griffin's latest creations, which were surprisingly simple compared to the other clothing he had created for them not a few nights ago, Cole took Kai's hand and brought him towards the far side of the room. The magic mirror Cole sometimes used sat peacefully on its pedestal glittering in the morning sun seeping through the cracks in the curtains.
Cole cupped it in his hands, his face beaming, looking like a child with a secret. He then picked up the mirror and placed it in Kai's hands.
"If you ask this mirror anything that you'd like it will show you anything, anything you wish to see; I can't leave this castle so this is my only window out."
"It does that? How?" He asked as his eyes widened.
"I'm not sure how, but my mother always said it was special."
"And how do you know it works?" Kai asked the dragon hybrid, his voice skeptical. A flash of guilt lit across Cole's eyes for a moment. He cleared his throat and muster as much dignity as he could.
"I used it to check up on you during your first month here." He admitted and Kai felt his veins bulge at that information.
"You used it to spy on me?"
"Only temporarily!" Cole protested, defensively and quickly changed the subject to avoid another spat. "Do you want to use it or not?" He asked and Kai stared at the object skeptically. It wasn't like he had anything to lose.
"I'd like to see my siblings, Nya and Lloyd." He told the mirror. He watched as his reflection was swallowed by a sapphire mist that made him feel light and safe. Suddenly the mist in the mirror's glass changed from light blue to dark red. Lights in the red smoke spun in a hazy, milky spiral. Kai's eyes widened as shapes and shadows started to form. He felt Cole at his side, no doubt feeling that Kai would need support after witnessing this. Colors and images began to become clear.
Kai recognized the interior of his home and the figures that began to form until Kai recognized the figure of Nya.
Except it wasn't the Nya he knew. This Nya was wild with distress, her hair and clothing haggard like she hadn't slept. Her once beautiful eyes were filled with anger and fear, red-rimmed from tears, and clouded by heavy black bags of insomnia. The image suddenly changed and he watched as Nya and Lloyd crawled their way out of a small cave. Lloyd was coughing and wheezing and holding his mouth to keep himself silent. Horror and fear froze Kai in place as he watched Nya struggle on weak arms to pull him up, only to stumble, and both roll to the ground.
Sickness running deep into their bodies rendered them unable to properly move.
Lloyd suddenly collapsed to the ground, coughing loudly and rasping. It didn't even sound like coughing. It sounded like Lloyd was choking on air. He squeezed his chest like doing so would loosen the constriction of his throat and help him breathe. Nya try to help, but she was too weak to do anything. Tears of anguish streamed down their faces. Lloyd's eyes were wet with the pain of his illness and the terror of his situation. It took Kai all but a few moments to register what they were doing and why, and he brought his voice horrifyingly back to life with a scream.
Cole remained frozen while Kai screamed.
"This is all my fault!" The brunette shrieked, forcing Cole back to reality.
"What?" He gasped in horror, hearing his consort take the blame for what he knew was the hybrid's mistake.
"You don't understand!" Kai turned to him with a face full of terror and eyes bright and wild from dread, the mirror clutched in his shaking hands. "Lloyd's sick! He can't get sick in the winter! He can't handle it with his chest!" He sobbed as a lone tear fell from each eye and began pooling at his chin. "This is all my fault! I promised when my parents died that I'd take care of them! I'm here living a fairytale while Lloyd's dying and it's all my fault!"
Cole just watched Kai have a fit of his own.
He threw his hands over his head and screamed while he shook it back and forth with such force it was a miracle he didn't break his neck. A new dread froze Cole's being to the core. His eyes fell to the candle at the other side of the room. Its light dimmed as it counted down to the end of the month. The candle was now under ten centimeters in length and the flame was extremely dull. It was unlikely to continue burning in the next few days and once the purple flame went out, his fate would be sealed.
Now, for the first time in his life, Cole had a choice.
He was well aware of his feelings and Kai's. All he needed was time, and he did not doubt between now and then that Kai would eventually say those words that would once again make him human. His staff would be free, and Kai could stay with him, rule by his side, and together they could return his castle to all its magnificent glory. The only price would be the removal of the only two people Kai could love more than him. Or he could set him free, send Kai back to his old life with his family who loved him, safe and free.
Let his siblings be saved and return their lost brother to them, and let them return to their peaceful lives before he meddled in it with his selfish desires and wishes.
He knew the chances of Kai returning before the needed time were slim. The chances of him saying what needed to be said were even slimmer. Both choices brought life and death, brought hope and despair, but only one truly promised Kai's happiness. The choice was clear.
"Then what are you waiting for? Get Flame and go after them." He ordered and Kai's entire world shifted at Cole's words.
"What?" He asked in a whisper and Cole offered a sad smile, his eyes shadowed by rave bangs. "Your brother and sister need you, Kai, you have to be there for them now; I can't leave the castle grounds but you can," he explained and the truth in Cole's words crashed against the realization that he had the option, rendered Kai incapable of speech.
"But what about our deal?" Kai choked, barely whispering that last part. His face fell to the ground unable to meet Cole's face. The Dragon Lord didn't give him the luxury and knelt on one knee so he was looking up at him.
"I told you, you aren't a prisoner anymore, I've never thought of you as one, and if memory serves, I freed you less than a week ago; so you're free to come and go as you like." He chuckled lightly and tears poured from Kai's cheeks. Before Cole could wipe them away, Kai threw himself into his arms and wrapped them tightly around Cole's neck and shoulders, and buried his tearful face into his chest.
"Thank you, Cole." Kai sobbed as he poured all of his happiness, love, and gratitude into those three words. He was thankful to Cole for loving him enough to let him go. Cole returned the gesture, holding Kai tight like the brunette would vanish if he didn't. He barely felt it when Kai pulled away from him and rubbed his eyes with his sleeve.
"I'll come back; once Lloyd and Nya are better, all three of us will come," Kai promised with hopeful eyes, so much so that Cole wisely kept quiet.
"I know you will," He nodded. Kai rushed to leave then stopped when he realized the mirror was still in his hand. Quickly, he turned around, motioning to return it, but Cole only smiled and curled Kai's fingers over the box. "I want you to keep it."
"I can't keep this!" Kai immediately protested.
"I'm giving it to you so that way you'll always have these to remember me by." He smiled as his claw tapped the heart-shaped ruby jewel of the chocker still clasped around Kai's throat. He had forgotten he was wearing it and dared not take it off. Kai nodded graciously. Words could not express his gratitude.
"I will come back," He promised again before he turned and gave Cole one final smile before bursting from the room and down the hallway. Only when he was alone, did Cole finally collapse against the table with such force that the glass screamed its protest against his weight. A clawed hand gripped his dark locks. The silent tears pricking his eyes were all he could do to keep from completely breaking down. Part of him still screamed to run down the hallway take Kai in his arms and beg him not to go.
He steadied himself to do just that.
But his mind burst with the memory of the sick little boy Kai loved so much crying out for him. A lone tear streaked down Cole's scaled cheek. At that moment, Ronin entered the room. He had passed Kai running down the half, but he just assumed that the brunette didn't want to be caught sleeping in the same bed as Cole again. If that did happen, Kai would probably be teased by some of the least mature staff members. Ronin wasn't ashamed to admit that he might be in that group.
When he entered the bedroom, however, he was a little confused to see the sorrowful Cole and to feel the depressing tension in the room.
But the troll decided to shrug it off. He thought they might have just crashed from the excitement from last night.
"Well, well, your highness, I must say everything is going just right! I knew you had it in you!" He cackled loudly, but Cole didn't even glance at him.
"I told him to go home." He said with little to no emotion in his voice. Ronin stopped in mid-sentence as he realized what the dragon hybrid just said.
"You WHAT?! How could you do that?!"
"I had to."
"Yes-yes-yes, but why?!"
"Kai's little brother is ill and he and his sister are lost in the blizzard, and they need his help, so I let him go because I love him." Cole declared and Ronin stared at the calm, expressionless, yet teary-eyed face of the Dragon Lord. He stared for a few moments before he ran off to tell the others that they could kiss any hope of being human goodbye. Almost all the staff were finishing cleaning up and preparing breakfast. The darkening clouds outside alerted the entire staff of the approaching blizzard that was practically at their door.
Jay was peeking through the curtains.
At the table, Tox was quick at work, gathering whatever Shade was cooking onto a tray for Kai and Cole. No one had disturbed the pair because the not so innocent minded members of staff thought it would be best to leave them alone. They couldn't stay in bed forever, though. Echo made to go upstairs, only for the door to slam into his face when someone opened it from the other side. All eyes rose and blinked when they spied Kai standing there panting and flushed like he had been running.
His eyes clouded with panic and rimmed with red like he had been crying for hours.
"What the hell happened to you?" Shade gaped, lowering the flames of the hearth. He hadn't failed to take in Kai's haggard appearance and immediately his thoughts became dark. "Where is Cole?" he demanded darkly. The phrase sent a silent child of dread through the staff, horrified at the thought of their Master being the cause of the boy's distress.
"He's upstairs," Kai spoke quickly. He rushed to sprint to his room before anyone could stop him. Before anyone could say anything, Ronin suddenly ran into the room and gave his friends a devastating look. Regretfully, he told them what Cole had said to Kai and their reactions were what was expected.
"He did what?!" They all screamed in horror and despair. Ronin slumped back while the others crowded around him. Judging from the sorrow in Kai's apologetic eyes and his limbs twitching with hastiness, they knew there was more to it than that, and that nothing was fine. They could already hear the thunder of Kai's steps as he finished gathering his things before running to the stables to get Flame. Harumi couldn't believe that this was happening.
Ultra Violet collapsed in a chair gazing at the ground as if she were a frozen doll.
They didn't want to let Kai leave. He didn't know about the deadline. They wanted to tell him but they knew they couldn't. Pixal reminded them that Kai had to figure it out himself. The banter continued, screaming and curses, ideas and arguments and protests and no one said anything that hadn't already been said. No one noticed the youngest and smallest of their group slip away unknown amongst the chaos.
"I'm afraid it's true." The troll sighed sadly.
"Kai's going away?" Echo whimpered as tears welled up in his eyes.
"But they were so close!" Harumi shrieked and everyone couldn't help but agree. After all this time, Cole had finally learned to love and their curse was so close to being broken. Now all that hope and hard work were down the drain. Jay suddenly gasped when he came up with a last-minute idea.
"That's it, then! That should break the spell!" He grinned like a madman, but no one was convinced.
"But it's not enough, Kai has to love him in return," Zane told his friend.
"But he does! Everyone can see that!" Ultra Violet exclaimed and Zane gave her a cold look.
"Do you though? Has Kai ever actually said that he loves Cole?" He asked them and they all thought about it, but none of them could recall a time Kai ever told Cole that he loved the Dragon Lord. "No, he didn't, and now it's too late," Zane explained and everyone slumped in grief and despair. Back upstairs, Cole watched as Kai left on his horse from above on his bedroom balcony. He roared in sorrow and anger but his anguished roars were lost in the sound of the violent, icy winds...

Life of a High School Vampire One-Shots 9 True Love?
Requested by Lava_Serpant on Wattpad
SUMMARY: Cole encounters Kai again in a pet store and gives the vampire his best doggy-face try at a second chance...
****************
Kai smirked as he loaded his shopping basket with dozens of tubs crickets and other creepy crawlies. He was currently hanging out in the reptile section of the Animal Crackers pet store and clearing all their shelves of insects. The reason for this was a large prank he and Lloyd were planning to pull off on their science teacher. While he still found his roommates, Kai had to admit that Lloyd's hidden devious personality was inspiring and a cause for caution.
Kai would rather have the blond prankster as an ally than a foe.
They had come up with this prank to get back at their science teacher for all the bad grades he gave them purely out of spite. Even when they studied and did well on a test or a project he still failed them and when Kai confronted him about this the teacher admitted that he just didn't like them. He thought Kai was a gothic freak and that Lloyd was a sad loser who would probably only get a job behind the counter at a fast-food place. Not only that but he was incredibly creepy to his female co-workers and rude to his female students.
If he saw a girl with their skirts even a little bit above the knee he would give them a detention.
He even did this to students outside his classes. When they learned this Jay tried to report the teacher to the school but their complaints were ignored. The only thing to change was that the science teacher started to fail Jay's science projects as well. That was when Kai and Lloyd decided to take matters into their own hands. At first, Kai wanted to use his powers to secretly torment the mind of the older man while he slept, but Lloyd's suggestion was much more fun.
It was no secret that the science teacher had severe entomophobia, the fear of insects.
It was all Lloyd's idea. He said that they would buy as many bugs as they could, fill the teacher's house with them, and secretly record him as he woke up and freaked out at the sight of all the bugs that were filling up his home. He and Kai were split up in the city buying as many bugs as they could while Jay went to get them some small cameras to record with. This was his third pet store and Lloyd had just texted telling him he was heading to his fourth now.
The prank would be set up tonight and would activate early in the morning.
Without much effort, Kai convinced his roommates to let him sneak into the house to set up the cameras and release the insects. He could easily fly in and out of the house like a bat and sneak all the items in without being detected, not that Jay or Lloyd knew that. After Kai was certain that he had everything he needed, he rounded the corner of the reptile sector to leave. He began to pass the toy aisle when he suddenly froze. There was a man crouched down in front of him examining some squeaky cat toys.
Although he could see his face, Kai already knew very well who this person was just from looking at his back.
The figure seemed to feel Kai's eyes on him because he stood up and slowly turned around to face the brunette, revealing Cole's shocked face.
"Kai?" He gasped when he saw his one-night stand again after over six weeks. "Wow, it's been uh it's been a long time, you look... the same?" He stammered, unsure what he was supposed to say in this situation.
"Thanks," Kai replied but it was very stiff and robotic. They stood there in silence for a while until Cole couldn't take it anymore.
"I thought you were gonna call me?" He demanded as he took a step forward, but a glare from Kai stopped him from going any further.
"I thought I put you in stronger chains?" The brunette retorted, still maintaining his glare as another uncomfortable began to form. That awkwardness was cut short, however, when a young woman around Cole's age suddenly approached them. She was a tan-skinned girl who seemed around Cole's age with teal blue eyes. She has a micro fringe and long golden curls with a purple hairclip on her side. She wore a cyan crop-top, light blue denim capri pants, and white flats.
Her makeup consisted of lavender-colored eyeshadow and mauve purple lipstick.
They say don't judge a book by its cover, but Kai could already see everything about her. He could tell that she considered herself to be one of the most beautiful and popular girls at whatever school she went to. He almost growled at the obvious drama diva princess. He saw what she thought she was more deserving and better than everyone else. He wouldn't be surprised if her parents bought her everything she ever wanted. Kai glared at the girl that he knew would get nowhere in life after school finished.
He almost allowed himself a small smirk at the thought.
"This pet store is so fucking stinky! Can we leave yet?" She complained loudly to Cole before she finally saw Kai. "Oh, hi there!" She smiled, showing off all her perfectly white teeth as she walked around to Cole's side and looped her arm around him, making sure to look Kai in the eye the entire time. Cole looked like a deer in headlights as his eyes darted back and forth between the girl and Kai. If he thought it was awkward before it was worse now.
How was he supposed to talk to his one-night stand about his new girlfriend?
When he saw that they were both looking at him expectedly, Cole finally snapped back to reality and plastered on a weak, worried smile.
"Uh, Kai meet Lucy, Lucy this is Kai." He introduced nervously.
"Charmed I'm sure." Lucy smiled at the brunette expectedly.
"No, you'd know if you were." Kai snapped, very unimpressed. Lucy paused for a second and Kai suspected that that was the first time anyone had ever spoken to her like that. Her disbelief changed to anger though as her smile melted into a disgusted scowl.
"How do you know this... person?" She asked her boyfriend as she gave Kai a judgemental once over, her tone implying that Kai was something she scraped off the bottom of her high heels.
"We were... friends?" Cole asked, not sure how to explain his relationship with Kai. "We know each other from a past life." He suddenly said with a chuckle, hoping some humor would lighten the mood, but Lucy didn't look convinced.
"It's true," Kai replied, confusing the couple. Kai barely managed to suppress a smirk as he began to spin his tale. "He was a soldier and I was a slave freeing gypsy prostitute; after seeing the light he made a passionate plea to his comrades to do what was right for mankind and was immediately shot in the chest eighty-one times, and a week later I poisoned myself for unrelated reasons." He shrugged as if he just told them what groceries he was buying.
Both humans could only stare at him in silence.
Cole in wonder and awe while Lucy in concern and disgust.
"Well it has been... super interesting meeting you Kai but we should go." She said with a grimace before she began to head for the entrance. She stopped, however, when she realized that Cole hadn't moved and was still staring at Kai, with the brunette doing the same. "Puppy?" She whined in frustration, snapping out of his little trance.
"J-Just give me a minute, Lucy." He told his girlfriend and this caused Lucy to sigh loudly as if he had just asked her to find every giant bag of pet food and carry them all to the car by herself. Nevertheless, the blond teen listened to him and left to wait for him outside. Cole waited until he was sure they were alone before he turned back to Kai, who still looked calm, cool, and collected.
"So is that story true? I mean did we meet in a past life?" He asked in amazement.
"Do you think I'm a liar?" Kai glared, sounding very offended that Cole would think he was a liar.
"No...?" Cole replied, scared that anything he said would be the wrong thing.
"Good, I'm trying to sharpen my skills for an upcoming court appearance." The brunette smiled in satisfaction.
"So... wait! Is that... it- it was a lie? Is it a lie? Not a lie?" Cole stammered in confusion as his mind struggled to comprehend what Kai told him. Everything about the brunette intrigued and irritated Cole in ways he couldn't understand. There was something about Kai that was mysterious yet dangerous and Cole wanted to know what it was no matter what happened to him. As he stared into Kai's bright, almost glowing, amber eyes the human was suddenly flooded with a feeling he hadn't felt since he met Kai.
Before he realized what was happening, Cole suddenly lunged forward and grabbed Kai's both sides of his head intending to steal a kiss.
He quickly jumped back, however, when Kai suddenly hissed at him like an enraged, feral cat. Cole was so ashamed of himself that he failed to see the split-second flash of Kai's fangs before they vanished. Shooting the human an offended glare, the vampire turned on his heel and stormed off.
"I'm sorry! That was stupid of me!" Cole exclaimed in horror, scared that he had just blown his chance, as he began to chase after Kai. "Wait, it- it's not even serious with Lucy! I don't even like her!" He tried to explain as he kept glancing over his shoulder, worried that Lucy could show up any second.
"Don't you?" Kai scoffed. "She referred to you as her loyal mutt, which is pretty dominate; I know you like that." He smirked when he could almost feel Cole's blush.
"Yeah but it's not the same Kai, I seriously miss you." He insisted but Kai kept walking, not even giving Cole a second look. "Kai, I still have the chains!" He suddenly shouted and that finally made Kai stop in his tracks. Kai turned around and was surprised to see the manacles from their last meeting were still around Cole's legs just above his ankles. "I called a hundred locksmiths and none of them could figure out how to get these things off," Cole added but that didn't shock Kai.
Those chains were custom made in his home country and Kai had hidden the key after he had left Cole's bed.
The only way to remove the chains was to either get the key from Kai or track down the person who made them and get them to craft a new key.
"Yes, sure it's a little awkward when I go to the beach or when I go to the gym but h-honestly, I don't want them off; I like the way they make me feel, I like the way they jingle about when I dance; I think I love you, Kai Smith," Cole admitted, sounding truly sincere, but Kai couldn't tell whether he meant it or not. All his life Kai knew when people were lying to him from his family, his roommates, to people he met in the streets. But with Cole it was different.
No matter how much he tried he couldn't figure this human out and that both angered and scared him.
He wanted to understand why Cole was so unique, but he couldn't get too close until he knew what Cole's intentions were.
"Do you know what it's like to be shot in the chest eighty-one times?" The brunette suddenly asked, catching Cole off guard.
"What?" He asked in confusion. Of all the responses to his confession that was not one of them.
"Eighty-one bullets in your chest," Kai repeated as he started to approach the noirette, keeping his movements slow and deliberate. "It feels like your heart becomes a thousand fireworks, your body is merely a vessel for that one moment that lasts a fraction of a second before you perish but it feels like lifetimes." He whispered as he stared Cole dead in the eyes. "That is what love feels like." He finished as he placed a hand over Cole's rapidly beating heart.
"I-I-I don't know if I know what that feels like." Cole stammered, not fully processing what Kai was saying or the brunette's shoulders slumping slightly.
"Then you're not the man in the past life I thought you were." The vampire muttered, disappointment clear in his voice as he tore his amber eyes away from Cole's emeralds. This scared Cole, causing him to think Kai was going to vanish as he did all those weeks ago, only this time the noirette would never see him again.
"Okay, but I-"
"Why don't you call me when you know what love feels like?" Kai suggested with a small smirk and a wink as he stepped out of Cole's personal space.
"D-Does that mean you want me to get shot in the chest o-or is it a metaphor?" He asked, trying to understand what Kai was talking about. It looked like Kai was about to answer until Cole's phone suddenly started ringing, the ringtone being Jingle Bells played by barking dogs.
"Your owner is calling you." Kai chuckled as Cole pulled out the phone to check the caller ID. It was Lucy but he wasn't in the mood to talk to her. After he declined the call, Cole looked up and suppressed an irritated groan when he saw that Kai had seemingly vanished into thin air again like the last time. The human could only hope that that wasn't the last time he ever saw Kai again. After paying for his items, Kai exited the store and his eyes scanned the area around the entrance until he found his target.
Cole's girlfriend, Lucy.
She was standing by the edge of the car park, smoking a cigarette as she impatiently waited for Cole. She had tried calling him a few times but the call went to voicemail. Adjusting the grip on his bags, Kai narrowed his eyes and walked over to her. When she saw him, Lucy glared at him and blew a cloud of smoke into his face. Kai didn't even blink as he pulled something out of the bags and extended it towards her.
"I have a gift for you." He said as she reluctantly took the item from him. "I advice you to shorten it." He smirked before walking away and leaving her with even more questions. Lucy watched him leave for a moment before she turned to the item he had given her and it only confused her more. He had given her a long, black, and grey dog leash...

Life of a High School Vampire One-Shots 8 Babysitting
SUMMARY: A little girl gets a clarification on monsters in the closet when Kai is the babysitter...
****************
Kelly Dillon was already dreading tonight. She couldn't help but think that this wasn't fair to the twelve-year-old girl. All her friends were out having fun while she was stuck in her house alone because her parents decided to go to a friend's costume party and she was grounded. It wasn't her fault the school toilets were easy to clog up. Kelly shuddered at the memory of her mother showing her the costume she planned on wearing. Her mother was dressing up like Brittany Spears like she was in that 'Hit Me Baby One More Time' video.
It was very awkward for her daughter to see something like that.
Kelly just didn't like seeing her mother in that type of clothing. It was very uncomfortable. Her father's costume wasn't so bad since he was dressing up as a simple pirate. But to make things even worse was the fact her parents hired a babysitter to watch her until the morning like she was a baby. Kelly might not have minded having a babysitter to hang out with tonight if the guy they hired wasn't super creepy. This Kai person was a new friend or something with her distant cousin Jay and they were roommates.
Or so she had been told by her parents. Kelly seriously doubted that Jay would ever associate with anyone as weird as Kai.
She had only met him once, briefly, but Kelly could already tell something was very wrong with this man. Just the way he stared at her and his smirk creeped her out. Once she could swear she saw a red glow in his eyes and the flash of fangs in his grinning mouth.
"Kelly! The babysitter's here!" Her father called, but there was no way in hell she was going down to greet that creature.
"I'm upstairs!" She exclaimed from her room. She heard her mother sigh in frustration and went to answer the door for her daughter.
"Hello again, Mr. Smith! Why don't you come in?" Her mother smiled at the brunette teen, moving aside to let him in. It took all of Kelly's courage to make her legs move her from her room to hide behind the corner to the stairs. Cautiously, she poked her head around and saw Kai talking with her parents, who were both already in the costumes and about to leave.
"We'll be back by one in the morning at the latest; emergency numbers are on the fridge, I have a casserole for you both ready in the oven, Kelly must be in bed by ten at the latest." Her mother reminded the teen sternly.
"I understand, don't worry, Kelly's safe with me," Kai promised and while this seemed to satisfy her parents, it caused a shiver of fear to run down Kelly's spine.
"Alright then, you two have fun!" Her father smiled before he and his wife left for their party. As soon as the front door closed, Kai whipped around to face Kelly so suddenly to almost caused the girl to scream. Instead, as soon as their eyes made contact, Kelly scrambled away from the stairs and back into her bedroom. Back downstairs, Kai chuckled lightly as he licked his fangs in anticipation. He could already tell this was going to be a fun night...
****************
It had been over an hour since Kai had arrived at her home and her parents left and Kelly knew that there was something more strange about this babysitter than she first suspected. Earlier, while he was finishing the casserole her mother had left, Kelly could hear him calling the blood bank a few blocks down the road and asking if they delivered. To make things even worse, Kelly had just seen him walk by the mirror in the hallway, but she didn't see his reflection.
It didn't take a genius to connect the dots about who, or more accurately what, this new babysitter was.
It didn't help when Kelly had nowhere to run, not with that thing downstairs waiting for her. Once she was certain of her theory about Kai, Kelly locked her bedroom door and opened up her laptop for some last-minute research. Everybody knew they come to suck a human dry of blood. They could also hypnotize her with their eyes. Kelly had seen the Twilight movies, and you better believe that they had left an impression.
"Kelly! Dinner's ready!" Kai called up to her from the kitchen and Kelly felt her insides turn to ice. Reluctantly, Kelly slowly descended the stairs and found Kai waiting for her in the dining room. The casserole was finished and the table was set for two people. Swallowing the heavy lump in her throat, Kelly took her seat opposite of Kai and began to eat, her eyes staying focused on the brunette. Kai also kept his gaze on the young girl, allowing her to get a good, detailed look at him.
His fingernails were sharp as kitchen knives and his teeth were pointed too.
Those sharp fangs kept flashing tauntingly at her across the dinner table as Kai smirked at her. He made no move to eat, but Kelly felt like she could see the hunger in his eyes. Her parents left her alone with him and now she didn't know what she was going to do. The babysitter was a vampire and he was looking at her like she was dinner. Kelly was going to need a wooden stake and a garlic milkshake to keep herself alive...
****************
As soon as she had finished dinner, even though she hardly touched the food, Kelly quickly excused herself and all but ran up the stairs and locked herself in the bathroom. But she knew she couldn't stay in there forever. The next few hours were sort of like a game between Kelly and Kai. A game of cat and mouse. Of predator and prey. Kelly would sneak as quietly and quickly into a room as she could, hide for about ten minutes, and hear Kai go into a room not too close to her.
Then when it was quiet she would sneak into the next room and repeat the process.
Honestly, Kelly could have kept that up all night. While she wanted nothing more than to put a stake in that monster's chest, she preferred to live to see another day. What she didn't know was that Kai was having the time of his life. It was fun messing with the kid but he knew that if he didn't get her to bed soon there would be trouble. Her parents would be home soon and if they saw their daughter still awake and hysterical about the brunette being a vampire he wouldn't get paid.
Then this would all be for nothing and he would go home empty-handed.
"It's getting late Kelly, time for you to go to bed now." Kai suddenly called out to her in a very playful tone. It was almost as if to him they were merely playing a little game of hide-and-seek. Not life and death like it felt for her. But Kelly had other plans than dying tonight. She was thinking it was time to call it a night and that Kai could put a stake in his heart instead. Kelly wasn't just hiding, she had grabbed a small log next to the basket by her parents' fireplace and knife from the kitchen.
While she was hiding she had been sharpened the log into a makeshift stake.
She was onto Kai. She knew why his tanned skin was as cold as ice and why he stared like she was a piece of medium-rare meat. Kelly was certain he was ready to take a bite out of her neck and drain her dry like she was a bloody smoothie. People might think she was paranoid but everybody knew that vampires come to suck innocent people's blood. They could hypnotize people with their glowing eyes so their prey had nowhere to run or escape their fates.
Despite being certain that she was right about this, Kelly knew her parents would never believe her now unless she got some proof.
But when their daughter was flying around the house with fangs they would know it was true. From now on she was wearing turtle necks made of silver and carrying a water gun loaded with a garlic milkshake. Kelly prayed to every God she could think of that she made it through the night and did not end up a vampire snack. She was now huddled in her closet, clutching the stake, the knife, and a few cloves of garlic. She thought about trying to call her parents, or the police, or pest control, but the problem was that the house phone was down the creaky stairs and next to the locked front door.
Even if Kelly did manage to call someone, that vampire would hear her and kill her.
"Kelly... Oh, Kelly..." A terrifying voice suddenly echoed from the corners of her mind.
"GET OUT OF MY HEAD!" She screeched as she desperately covered her ears to block out the voices, but that just made them louder.
"I want to suck your blood..."
"I KNOW! GETAWAY YOU BLOOD-SUCKING FREAK!" She cried as scared tears welled up in her eyes, wishing for her parents to come home. Just then Kelly was almost overwhelmed by the sudden feeling that she needed to look up. Listening to her gut, Kelly slowly looked up and all her blood turned to ice. Painted across the roof was a pitch-black shadow. The only features she could make out were a pair of glowing blood-red eyes and razor-sharp fangs.
Kelly didn't even get a chance to scream before the shadow lunged at her...
****************
By the time Mr. and Mrs. Dillon arrived back at their home, it was just after midnight. They were both a little tipsy after the party but not drunk enough to get arrested if a cop pulled them over. When they got home they found Kai sitting on the couch reading a magazine he had found on the coffee table. Kelly wasn't anywhere in sight and they couldn't hear anything so they both assumed she was in bed asleep. But her mother made a mental note to check in on her when they went to bed.
As the couple looked around the downstairs of their home they were surprised by how clean everything was except for a few dirty dishes in the sink.
They had been worried that leaving a kid and a teenager alone would all but destroy the house. Or at least some empty chip wrappers scattered around the living room. When Kai saw them he gave them a warm smile as he stood up and tossed the magazine back where he found it.
"I trust everything went well?" Kelly's father asked as he gave Kai a once over.
"Yeah, I gave her some of that casserole but she only picked at it and then went to bed; I think she was feeling a bit sick." He explained with a sympathetic wince.
"Was the food cooked right?" Mrs. Dillon asked in worry that her food had made her daughter.
"Yeah, I ate a whole plate of the casserole and I feel completely fine," Kai reassured her and that did ease her worry. That had been a lie, but he couldn't tell them that he burnt the casserole to ash.
"Are you sure that Kelly is alright?" Her father asked suspiciously.
"Well, I checked on her about... an hour ago and she was falling asleep while watching Twilight." The brunette shrugged.
"What happened to your hand, lad?" Mr. Dillon asked when he noticed the long, thing cut on Kai's left palm, and the brunette mentally cursed when he saw it. That little brat had managed to catch him with the stake when he scared her before he put her to sleep. Kai knew he would be picking splinters out of his hand for a week, even though he did kinda deserve it. He gave them some half-baked excuse about an accident when he was cutting up the casserole.
They bought it and dropped the subject after Mrs. Dillon made Kai put on a plaster.
After a few more minutes of the small talk Mr. Dillon handed Kai the cash he was owed and his wife went to check on Kelly. She peeked into her daughter's room and smiled when she saw Kelly fast asleep and snoring lightly, the menu from the Twilight DVD lighting up the room. After Kai had taken his cash and flown off into the night, the couple had gotten into their pajamas and headed to bed, falling asleep. Neither of them noticed their daughter's growing nightmare.
Nor did they realize their own when they would see how much the therapy bills would cost them over the next few years...
