the more i think about it the more it makes sense to me that tomura’s actions can be read as sacrificing, that he can be read as taking on incredible amounts of personal risk for the sake of his found family, as decisions made not simply out of ego but with the weight of responsibility behind them. like with the deku parallelism for one, but also the number of times and ways he rejects the shimuras for the lov, like there may particularly be a desire to see through the desires of his found family in a way he couldn’t with his blood family.

Tomura is a character who is heavily informed by his past. At the beginning of the series, he had none. He had forgotten it. He didn’t know what happened to him or what he came from. Even then, he carried the past with him in the forms of his family’s hands, as relics.

His link to the past grows stronger and stronger as the series progresses. We learn that AFO’s fixation on Tomura is because of Tomura’s past, as Nana’s descendent; as well as AFO’s past, his unresolved conflict with his own brother, and his goal of molding OFA into a quirk(/person) who would work with him rather than against him. Tomura also starts to remember his own past, and he destroys the relics that link him to it—he declares himself liberated from the past, he declares that the past is inconsequential at the same time as he is incapable of articulating a vision of the future. He plants himself securely (or so we think) in the present.

As this dream sequence shows, however, he is unable to detach from the past. The past continues to haunt him. The past refuses to be destroyed or forgotten.

When Tomura accepts Ujiko’s procedure, the narrative likens Tomura to a butterfly—a being that transforms its old self into something new. Tomura tries to do the same thing: in trying to destroy his past, in trying to transform his very physical self, he tries to shed more and more of his identity as Shimura Tenko. But Tomura fails. Because of the heroes’ interruption, Tomura’s transformation is stopped at 70%, and he’s unable to complete it—he cannot shed his old self.

Even in 270, he relives the images from his past, specific experiences that hurt and traumatized him the most. Even though he’s already destroyed them once, twice, in their physical forms, his family still returns to him, to hold him and to hold him back. As Shigaraki Tomura, he’s tried to resist this, he tries to obliterate them, but the past doesn’t reside in relics or bodies. It lives on in him, and it always catches up.
