“I wouldn’t have thought a prodigy like you would care for the unexceptional,” Geto tells him. Those words used to ring harsh, sharp with resentment; now they just sound soft, like time has washed the edges off of them.

“You were always exceptional,” Gojo replies without hesitation. More than exceptional, is what he wants to say. No one else came even close; Gojo doesn’t think anyone else could ever again. Geto is the anomaly of his life, unyielding, ungovernable and frighteningly beautiful.

Geto’s stare is open now, like it hasn’t been in years. “Yeah, well,” he responds with a defeated smile, “not enough to avoid what I set in motion anyway.” His stance is lax as he faces his old friend, the only line of tension is his right foot, turned at an angle, like he’s already planning his first step away - away from the second chance he doesn’t believe in. Away from Gojo.

Somewhere, in the domain of possibilities, there’s has been a version of them that never parted ways; there must be one where they overcome the crushing improbability that everything will work out in their favour, finally. And Gojo’s whole being is already projecting forward, determined to drag Geto back into that statistical anomaly with him. He has let him slip away before, he’s not going to hesitate the second time around.

Hope is harder to visualise than any technique, any domain; but Gojo can taste it on Geto’s lips.

Isaac finds himself staring out of his window almost constantly now. It always came instinctive to him, like a second nature, to seek height. To gain the higher ground. There’s no higher ground for him than that tower, isolated and standing tall over unfolding hills and plains. Seeking refuge from the ground can be expected from someone like him - who’s once been held all too close to it from cruel hands that seemed to believe he belonged there. Safe as it is, Isaac has never seen it as a shelter. It’s a perch.

Height is a call to aspiration, to elevation, to a higher purpose. That’s why he’d initially chosen it as his hide. Things have changed since that moment, yet he’d still felt the call to return to that place. It’s different now; no need for hiding, scheming, festering. The round, sheltered space feels larger now, airy. Like he can finally breathe again. There is no higher purpose anymore - no higher purpose than simply learning to be alive. Finally, he can master that. After a lifelong struggle for liberation, for self-cleansing, he has his freedom and the most precious thing of all: time to enjoy it.

He sees the smile that pulls at his lips in his reflection on the glass, soft and easy for once. From there, his future looks like the view from that window now. Open.

Cold, damp tiles dig into Chouso’s naked back. There’s no more space to retreat to, no where else to run for cover; he’s a trapped animal, cornered by Mahito’s looming figure under running water. The curse is leaning in, purposefully taunting, holding him captive between the promise and the withholding of contact.

Though Chouso sense no danger, his naked state is enhancing the intrinsic dread of that closeness - at least, Chouso tells himself ‘dread’ is what he’s feeling.

“Don’t worry, I won’t touch you,” Mahito drawls, smug and amused. “Though maybe you’ll let me, in time.”

Chouso swallows. His mark is a line of heat through his face. He doesn’t move an inch even when Mahito finally steps back, .

“For now you could just show me what that would look like,” Mahito prompts, raking his eyes down Chouso’s form.

The blood that Chouso has failed to conjure up in self defence traitorously rushes downwards when Mahito’s meaning becomes clear.
